Growth mindset has changed the way I teach, the way I parent my three boys, and the way I face challenging situations and risks.  It has given me the resilience I need while in graduate school.  Dr. Carol Dweck's book, Growth Mindset, is a paradigm-changing book.  I highly recommend it.  Thanks for sharing this great visual representation of Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets.

In fact, no other leader behavior had a bigger effect on employees across the outcomes we measured. Being treated with respect was more important to employees than recognition and appreciation, communicating an inspiring vision, providing useful feedback — even opportunities for learning, growth, and development.

Growth is painful.  Change is painful.  But in the end, nothing is as painful as staying stuck somewhere you do not belong.  Again, you’re not the same person you were a year ago, a month ago, or a week ago.  You’re always growing.

(From the article): Innovation is at heart a process of discovery, and so the role of the person leading it is to set other people down a path, not to short-circuit it by jumping to a conclusion right at the start. To lead innovation, you don’t have to be the next Steve Jobs, nor do you need to guess the future. Rather, you must carve out the mental space within which the innovation process can be carried out.


How? First, by setting the expectation that innovation will push boundaries. Fashion designers often include very bold designs in their lines to inspire customers to try more-flamboyant styles. In a similar way, Amazon pursues its flying drones, and Google’s X lab its driverless cars and high-altitude Wi-Fi, in part to make their entire organizations bolder and more innovative.

(From the article): Great leaders know where their blind spots are, present a high-resolution vision of the organization’s future, and are mindful of activity happening on the periphery. Great leaders encourage diversity of thought and skills so that they can see and overcome their own blind spots. They use the high-resolution vision as a way to bring team members back into alignment. And they check to make sure that moving objects–be they customers, competitors, markets, or employees–don’t pose a significant threat.

20 things successful people don’t do was a great eye opener for me. As I read all of the things that successful people don’t do I noticed many of these qualities I have seen in exhibited in me. But the difference between seeing them in me and actually applying these skills to my  life is a whole other battle.  I believe that within myself is a fire for success that is unmatched by anyone I’ve ever met.  I have changed everything about myself in the last few months to get ready for my future ahead, and nobody will stop me. I know this because I have failed so many times early on in my life that I have learned from my own mistakes, as well as many of my peers I used to look up to. One of the hardest things I have had to change to help better myself is surrounding me with positive people, with similar goals as me. When I read this in the article it hit home. In the summer time and junior year I was always where the fun was at and worrying about the wrong things, I wasn’t focused. I’m glad I realized this at the start of this year and I have removed myself from that “scene”.  It was really hard at first. I felt alone and abandoned and I got ridiculed by the “friends” I used to be so close with. As we reach closer and closer to the end of senior year it has become apparent that all of those friends I sort of left for the benefit of me are asking me for help and wondering what they can do to get out of this phase they all seem to be stuck in.  I usually tell them to look at the big picture, and realize that there is way more to life than Mill Creek. The people I associate myself with nowadays share my dreams and I am happier overall. Applying all 20 qualities I read in this article will help me use the college I end up going to for my advantage, and get ahead in the business management and administration field I feel I am so destined to be in.
