The role of leader is an important one. A leader has to be conscious of the impression he or she is making. First and foremost a leader has to be a positive role model of integrity. But there is a balance that has to be struck; people don’t want to be led by a leader who is performing in a role all the time. We want a leader to uphold ideals and values, but we also want a leader to be real.

(From the article) The most effective leaders follow Leadership Rule #1, and return to it during those leadership challenges that require the very best of their leadership abilities. They understand that you cannot change expectations, alter perceptions, and motivate others unless you maintain the ability to influence them in a positive manner. When followers sense that your leadership decisions are made with other priorities, they will not trust you. Without trust, you will lose the ability maintain the positive influence necessary to motivate and inspire others, and you will have limited the value of your leadership investment.

 

Whether you are a brand new leader, or someone with years of experience, the next time you find yourself faced with a leadership decision, pause and remind yourself of this:

 

“It’s not about you.”

Sure the system is imperfect. People are imperfect. There are good guys and bad guys at every level. I’ve learned a heck of a lot about getting unstuck on both sides of the equation. I must help, and will do everything in my power to help you, them, and the guys in the middle.

We must work together to create the conversation that will build better organizations through meaningful visions, great cultures, and brilliant execution. Such results come from imperfect, inspired people who care for the big picture – at every level.

I’m not ready to pick a side. The best good I can do is right here, stuck in the middle – with you.

Why do most managers and executives have trouble "coaching" their teams to higher levels of peformance? Why is it that so few companies spend NOTHING on training managers and executives how to coach, inspire, delegate, assign, and give feedback?

 

Everyone pays lipservice to the idea of leading/managing teams, but so few companies put their resources behind the concept of being a great place to work because of the quality of the leadership/management.

 

We seem to have taken the "heart" out of leading/managing and it's become a very sterile environment that just doesn't work. Trust comes from the heart, and if you're not leading, managing, coaching from that perspective, your team will NEVER trust you!

In fact, no other leader behavior had a bigger effect on employees across the outcomes we measured. Being treated with respect was more important to employees than recognition and appreciation, communicating an inspiring vision, providing useful feedback — even opportunities for learning, growth, and development.
