How Google Became Such a Great Place To Work

How Google Became Such a Great Place To Work | Sustainable Leadership | Scoop.it

Google calls its HR department People Operations, though most people in the firm shorten it to POPS.The group is headed by Laszlo Bock, a trim, soft-spoken 40-year-old who came to Google six years ago.

Bock says that when POPS looked into Google’s woman problem, it found it was really a new mother problem: Women who had recently given birth were leaving at twice Google’s average departure rate.

At the time, Google offered an industry-standard maternity leave plan. After a woman gave birth, she got 12 weeks of paid time off. For all other new parents in its California offices, but not for its workers outside the state, the company offered seven paid weeks of leave.

From the article:

The long term goal is much more important and difficult. Future leaders must lead the transformation of the workplace with superior leadership skills that are not common in the majority of our institutions!

As you can imagine, this effort will require young leaders to change workplace cultures from within.

Our future leaders must not only be prepared to use effective leadership tools and techniques, they must understand that many of their bosses will be leading in ways that are completely opposite to what they have been taught.

They will be leading against the tide.

It's got to be about Why, not How: How Great Leaders Inspire Action, Simon Sinek

"Why FIRST:  Communication and the Golden Circle:  Why, How, What?  Inspire where others do not.  Profit is JUST a result NOT a reason for existing."

Simon's examples include Apple (why so innovative?), Martin Luther King (lead major change, Civil Rights movement), and the Wright brothers (controlled powered manned flight that others did not achieve, tho' were working on.)

With 5-year-old twin boys in the house, things get pretty interesting. Their constant interaction reminds me of my childhood growing up with a brother 18 months older than I. For the first 14 years, we fought five times a day, every day.

Excellent lesson, so true. -- from the article "True empathy is not putting yourself in others’ shoes as if it were you. It’s putting yourself in others’ shoes as if you were them. Try to feel how they feel, not how you would feel. The only way to do that is to truly get to know them and understand their authentic self."

Three Surprising Leaders Who Demonstrated the Importance of Flexibility

Three Surprising Leaders Who Demonstrated the Importance of Flexibility | Sustainable Leadership | Scoop.it

History provides us with many examples of leadership.  Whether you talk about Churchill, Steve Jobs or Abraham Lincoln, one thing they have in common is the ability and wisdom to adapt to the circumstances while still keeping their eye on the goal.   History is also filled with rigid and inflexible types who might not bend, but almost invariably break.  However, history doesn’t always tell the full story.  This article will show three unlikely people who demonstrated the theory of flexibility in leadership.

Interesting read> (From the article): Leaders in business today mostly don’t have the same obstacles, but they can still learn the lessons from Arnold: adapting to the circumstances, and keeping the long-term goal (winning the war, maximizing employee performance) intact while making sure the little steps (identifying motivational needs, opposing navies) are the focus.  Just don’t later turn over secrets.

Half of employees ‘feel threatened by bosses’

Half of employees ‘feel threatened by bosses’ | Sustainable Leadership | Scoop.it

Almost half of employees (47%) say they feel threatened by leaders within their organisations, according to research published today.

The research, by development consultancy Head Heart + Brain, found that poor leadership skills have led many employees to feel "actively threatened" by their bosses' behaviour.

Via Roger Francis, Bobby Dillard, AlGonzalezinfo
AlGonzalezinfo's curator insight, April 20, 9:58 PM

This is truly concerning.  From the article:

"In the current economic climate, both business and public-sector leaders feel they have to run just in order to stand still. They are under immense pressure to make their organisations leaner while also improving performance.

And pressure breeds threatening behaviour if it isn't channelled in the right way. If it is managed in the wrong way, stress can gradually erode the quality of their leadership until it deteriorates to a disastrously low level.

"It creates a vicious downward cycle where productivity begins to suffer as the work force begins to feel increasingly threatened by brain-fried leaders."

Now, we have the first set of tools for searching for new business models as we launch start-up ventures. It also happens to have arrived just in time to help existing companies deal with the forces of continual disruption. In the 21st century those forces will make people in every kind of organization—start-ups, small businesses, corporations, and government—feel the pressure of rapid change. The lean start-up approach will help them meet it head-on, innovate rapidly, and transform business as we know it."

Scientists have suggested that, with a little willpower, it takes roughly 30 days for a person to form a new habit.  As with mastering anything new, the act of starting and getting beyond the preliminary stage where everything feels awkward is 80% of the battle.  This is precisely why it’s important to make small, positive changes every day over the course of at least a 30 day period.
