Five Cities Show the Future of Walkability | TheCityFix

Five Cities Show the Future of Walkability | TheCityFix | Sustainable Futures | Scoop.it

To walk in our cities is more than just a simple act of transport. Walking represents an appropriation of urban space for daily life. It means being an active part of the urban environment by learning, understanding and shaping the city on a personal level. Walking is one of the most democratic and equitable ways of getting around, but it’s also one of the ways most linked to factors outside an individual’s control, like social or physical abilities and the presence of infrastructure to walk comfortably and safely.

These are the factors that define walkability, which refers to how safe, convenient, and efficient it is to walk in an urban environment. Walkability has a direct impact on urban residents’ mobility, as the term is often used to communicate how likely the average person is to choose walking over other modes of transport in a given area.

Yale Environment 360: Record Amount of E-Waste Generated Globally in 2014, Report Finds

Yale Environment 360: Record Amount of E-Waste Generated Globally in 2014, Report Finds | Sustainable Futures | Scoop.it

A record amount of electronic waste was discarded in 2014, with a total of 41.8 million tons of personal electronics and household appliances hitting landfills worldwide, a new report from the United Nations University found. The highest per-capita totals of so-called "e-waste" came from Scandinavian and European countries — Norway topped the list, followed by Switzerland, Iceland, and Denmark — and China and the U.S. were responsible for the largest volumes overall. Nearly 60 percent of e-waste by weight came from electronic components and wiring in large and small kitchen, bathroom, and laundry appliances, and 7 percent was discarded mobile phones, calculators, personal computers, and printers, the report said. It also found that less than one-sixth of all discarded electronics were properly recycled, and an estimated $52 billion in gold, copper, silver, and recoverable materials went to waste. Improperly discarded e-waste also added 2.2 million tons of lead, mercury, cadmium, and other potentially harmful metals to the environment and released 4,400 tons of ozone-depleting chemicals into the atmosphere, the report found. It projects the volume of e-waste will rise by 21 percent to 50 million tons in 2018.

Innovation Excellence | Don’t Fail with Innovation Failure

Innovation Excellence | Don’t Fail with Innovation Failure | Sustainable Futures | Scoop.it
It is generally accepted that innovation involves risk.  In the more enlightened organizations it is also clear that failure should be accepted as a consequence of playing the innovation game.  It’s a bit like sport.  You can’t win all the time, but it doesn’t mean that you change the whole team if you lose one game.
Flora Moon's insight:

Companies need graceful failure or what the author calls "competent failure."  Learning from experience can provide greatest opportunities for learning.
