How Green Is Your Marathon? | Discuss this @CSRshareDay 22nd April with SEA Board Member Graham Ross of Kusaga Athletic | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

The sight of tens of thousands of runners pouring through city streets has become a familiar scene all over the world.  Iconic bridges, major tourist attractions and arterial roads are closed to regular traffic for a rare chance to pound the cobblestones or climb ancient steps.  No question this trend is positive in many ways - fitness becomes a focus, tourism booms, local shops and restaurants enjoy peak crowds.

But what impacts are there?

SEA Board Member Graham Ross considers this in this article.

Join Graham on twitter to discuss this and more on @CSRshareDay 22nd April. He's hosting at 3pm Sydney time (AEST).

Hotels worldwide are going green with LEED. Is your conference hotel certified? | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

It's no secret that with operations running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, hotels consume natural resources at a high rate. Representing more than 5 billion square feet of space in the United States alone, there is an enormous opportunity for the industry—and guests—to positively affect the built environment.

Across the world, demand for green hotels is rising. Today, LEED-certified hotels of all sizes are found in more than 40 U.S. states, 31 countries and five continents. It’s a movement sparked in part by guest preferences.

Is your conference hotel venue LEED certified?

Large-scale events and sustainability: The case of the universal exposition Expo Milan 2015

Large-scale events and sustainability: The case of the universal exposition Expo Milan 2015 | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

In the last fifteen years, the organization and staging of large-scale events have been progressively included in the sustainability debate.

This article seeks to contribute to the literature that assesses the impacts of large-scale “one-off” events, by taking the forthcoming Universal Exposition of Milan in 2015 as an example to further explore the conditions and requirements that may eventually bring true meaning to the term “sustainable event”.

The analysis is mainly based on the Expo Milan 2015 experience in sustainability reporting activities, whose goal is to measure, assess and communicate the social and environmental performance of the organising company, the impacts on the territory of the activities that are being carried out, and the level of engagement and dialogue with the stakeholders involved.

Sponsors, Brands, Sustainable Events?

Sponsors, Brands, Sustainable Events? | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

Events offer a chance to positively influence sustainability in the supply chain and local industry, and they can also offer a platform to promote positive change amongst event attendees and the local destination.

But what role can brands play?

I’d like to think that brands who have their own sustainability mission would have an eye on the sustainability performance of the events they align their name to or produce themselves. That’s straightforward thinking isn’t it?

A brand that’s shouting far and wide of its great-green-progress may be at risk if an event’s sustainability impacts are not being responsibly managed.

Austin Marathon and Half Marathon Earns Council for Responsible Sport Gold Certification

Austin Marathon and Half Marathon Earns Council for Responsible Sport Gold Certification | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

The 2016 Austin Marathon and Half Marathon presented by NXP on February 14, has earned Gold certification by the Council for Responsible Sport. It is the first gold level effort and the fifth consecutive certification—the most of any in the pool of certified events.

Back in 2008 as the Council for Responsible Sport was getting started, the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon was one of the pilot events to test their operations against the first set of standards and guidance on best practices for hosting responsible events. Since then, the Conley Sports team has not rested in complacency, but rather has continually challenged itself to be an example to others in the industry for how to make a fun, profitable event into a fun, profitable event with purpose.

ISO 20121 Procedures, Processes, Policies, Paperwork… fast track it with some easy to use templates!

ISO 20121 Procedures, Processes, Policies, Paperwork… fast track it with some easy to use templates! | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

Having implemented ISO 20121 a few times now, and trained and consulted to lots of individuals and events considering implementing a sustainability management system, one of the biggest hurdles for many is the seemingly daunting paperwork side of things.

Not only are there lots of procedural requirements that pesky auditors will bother busy event managers for, but you also need to collect your evidence often in paperwork ‘proof’ format.

So I decided to go ahead and pull together a series of templates that might make starting the management system formalities a little bit easier.

Las Vegas Utilities Really Don’t Want the Strip to Go Solar

Las Vegas Utilities Really Don’t Want the Strip to Go Solar | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

Twenty acres of sun-catching glass sit atop the Mandalay Bay convention center, and when new installations are complete, it will become the biggest rooftop solar array in the US. In recent months, three of Nevada’s largest casino companies—MGM Resorts, Wynn, and Las Vegas Sands—have announced plans to buy and produce more renewable energy for their hotels, a move driven both by increasing demand for responsible energy use from the companies that rent their conference halls, and a surplus of cheap power from solar farms in Nevada and California. “It’s no accident that we put the array on top of a conference center. This is good business for us,” said Cindy Ortega, chief sustainability officer at MGM Resorts. “We are looking at leaving the power system, and one of the reasons for that is we can procure more renewable energy on the open market.” But there is a big shadow lurking over a rapid greening of the Las Vegas strip. Regulators will not let casinos simply walk away from the state’s monopoly utility provider, NV Energy.
