Corporate Philanthropy Programs for Sustainability

Corporate Philanthropy Programs for Sustainability | Sustainable Development in India | Scoop.it

www.wipro.org

Corporate sustainability at its core means, ways of managing business responsibilities in a sensitive manner so that, social, economic and environmental factors and their benefits are embedded within the panning, execution and monitoring processes of the business. Corporate sustainability to a great extent ensures the long-term success of a flourishing business. It is of vital importance for corporate to foster a responsible, ethical and a long lasting corporate philosophy. Today’s’ corporate have a great deal of responsibility towards the society as well as the environment. Most of the businesses work side by side with the government organizations as well as the NGO’s to ensure social welfare and environmental stability through corporate philanthropy programs.

How Businesses Help

Businesses work towards benefiting the underprivileged children, the ailing masses belonging to poorer sections of the society, catering towards environmental benefits through greener buildings, treatment of wastewater, use of renewable sources of power and much more. All corporate have their separate agenda which they work upon. A lot of planning, finances as well as man power are generally engaged in the process which gets integrated in their corporate philanthropy program.

Businesses as a common practice may donate cash, but many of them also move forward to allow the use of their property, facilities, and services. Some of the corporations also set up volunteer groups among employees who in turn donate their service time for a cause. These are essentially non-profit moves on the part of businesses and are totally charity grants based on the individual plans of the business.

Successful Strategies for Corporate Philanthropy

A deep-rooted, well planned and tactically executed corporate philanthropy program have the strength to earn far-fetched benefits for a business from the view point of public relations. It may also have a straight impact on the bottom line.  In several cases where there is a tough competition for products or services, consumers may just happen to take a decision regarding their choice solely based on the reputation of the company and how well it supports environmental and social causes.

A significant key to a successful corporate charity program can be involvement of the employees at every level of the business.

From the top most management to the last level each employee given a chance, can be involved in supporting the philanthropy program through voluntary participation. It can be through personal donations or providing services. Businesses can also work out systems of paid time off when employees may engage in community services to support the company programs.

However all strategies must be planned and should be able to endure long term commitments. A quick and once in a while program neither has sustainable benefits not does it work towards corporate sustainability. Such programs may not prove to be practical and may not weigh up to the efforts taken in their organization.

The most perfectly suited corporate philanthropy programs are those which align wholly with the culture, values, role and the business goals of the corporate. Programs which are planned keeping in mind these pre-requisites are more likely to work well towards their goals and remain workable for years benefiting the community as well as the company.

Sustainability through Corporate Responsibility a Viable Option

Sustainability through Corporate Responsibility a Viable Option | Sustainable Development in India | Scoop.it

visit: www.wipro.org

Organizations all over the world big and small have begun to make a steady and influential move toward sustainability as most of them have started to recognize the growing convergences between environmental and economic welfare. One popularly evolving accelerator in the process which is being used by companies is to involve employees in assisting to accomplish sustainability goals. Sustainability program designed individually by companies are being utilised to achieve this objective.

The term corporate responsibility generally relates to a company’s effort that goes in maintaining sustainability in environmental, social, and economical parlance.

It may also be referred to as "corporate citizenship" and generally involves short-term costs which do not bring about any instantaneous financial benefit to the business, but as an alternative support constructive social as well as environmental changes. Corporate responsibility is important for businesses in India and all around the world. Industry Canada plays an important role in promoting and facilitating sustainable and responsible practices. Businesses have the power and the means to help promote sustainability through sustainability programme aimed at the betterment of society and environment. It is important in today’s multifaceted, unified world that corporate recognize, categorize and deal with their economic, environmental, social and material impacts.

The Key Corporate Responsibility Issues:

The main corporate responsibility issues include eco-efficiency, environmental protection, responsible sourcing, fair practices of human resource management, human rights, health and safety, social equity, anti-corruption approaches, gender balancing, consumer protection, good governance, community participation, employee training, liberal patronage to social and environmental causes, sound business ethics and transparent stakeholder relations. Sound principles towards corporate social responsibility and actual practices can make companies more productive, dynamic, and creative generate healthy competition.

An appropriately designed and executed corporate social responsibility idea may prove to be advantageous to a business giving it enhanced productivity, better quality, greater access to markets, superior reputation,  improved sales, cost savings in business operation processes, competent support in human resources, finer brand image, greater customer loyalty among many other related benefits.

Pre -requisites to a Good Sustainability Program:

Studies reveal that companies which effectively include employees in the sustainability programs flourish in their endeavour better than the others by extensive margins. The bonding between their employees is better and the effects are long lasting than the others who do not involve their human resource base in the planning or execution of their programs.

Organizations which allow their employees to participate effectively in planning and execution through open communication channels and permit to communicate ideas for sustainability engagements have better chances of achieving their goals than businesses that simply expect employees to execute ideas that have been conveyed to them.

In a world that expects corporate to access and utilize natural resources responsibly, access and handle the impacts their business creates on the environment and the society, appreciate and address concerns of stakeholder, and also to chip in to the sustainable policy goals, sustainability programs have to be designed to suit the local and immediate environment. Issues that need immediate attention have to be the centre of focus which may vary from health, education, environmental protection or related issues. Accurate information needs to be assessed and acted upon depending on the requirement.

With corporate houses working towards the benefit of the environment and the larger society along with governments and individuals, sustainability could after all become a viable option.

Importance of Education for a Progressive India

Importance of Education for a Progressive India | Sustainable Development in India | Scoop.it

www.wipro.org

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – Nelson Mandela

Education is and will always remain one of the strongest pillars of a progressive society. In a country like India, which has been touted as the next superpower for long; education is the power that can bring about a huge change. For India to change as a society and attain overall progress, education is a major catalyst. Every household in the country needs to understand the importance of education to bring about a major social change in the way the society thinks and acts.

Education and a Sustainable Society

Adapting a sustainable pattern of living is the need of the hour for a developing nation like India. To become a sustainable nation, the major focus should be on education, as sustainability can be promoted through knowledge and education. In terms of providing quality education India is one of the premium nations across the world. India is home to many world class educational institutions; however the problem lies in the accessibility of education.

Most of these institutes are located in metros and cities and the population in the rural areas does not have access to them. For overall development, it is extremely important that education should be accessible in the remotest corner of the country. The importance of education shouldn’t be overlooked as it is creates equality, leads to development, creates employment and improves productivity for the residents.

Lack of Education in the rural areas

The Government is doing its bit by providing free for all education even in the remotest corner of the country. The Indian corporate structure too has chipped in through its various non-profit initiatives to offer equal opportunities at education to every child across the nation. Here are some of the reasons why in terms of scope of quality education India offers on a different scale in the urban and rural sectors.

The biggest problem in the rural areas is the inadequate infrastructure.Inequality is another deterrent that has led to a divide in right to educationGender bias is still prevalent in most areas of the country and girls are not given the right to basic and primary education in such areas.Lack of proper sanitation facilities in schoolsThe quality of education provided in these rural schools is extremely casual.

Due to the above reasons there is a lot of disparity in the quality of education provided. Thankfully there are efforts from the NGO’s, nonprofit organizations and the corporate sector to address the above issues. There are efforts to tie up with some of the foremost educational institutions across the country to provide good quality education in the rural areas.

These programs help the corporate structure in creating a skilled workforce for the future; hence the program in itself is a sustainable initiative. The overall progress of the society is dependent on a sustainable pattern of living and quality education is no exception to this initiative.

Adapting Green Technology for Eco Sustainability

www.wipro.org

India should have ideally been a sustainable society long ago, considering the huge population it has to cater to. Unfortunately, India joined the sustainability bandwagon much later in time as compared to the other developing nations like China and Brazil. But the fact is, when it comes to initiatives like these, it is never too late to adapt.

Importance of Sustainability

Sustainability is broadly divided as eco sustainability, social sustainability and economic sustainability. In the current scenario, India needs to adapt all three sustainability initiatives to be on the right path of success, but ecological sustainability is the most important. In layman terms, ecological sustainability is nothing but using the planet and the natural resources in a responsible manner so that we can share them with the next generations.

In India, the need of the hour is eco sustainability because the natural resources are being used up at an alarming rate and are quickly depleting. They need to be conserved so that the distribution between generations is just. Here are some few ways to conserve natural resources in the country.

Control the use of natural and non renewable energy resources like natural gas, diesel, petrol etcCreate alternate and renewable energy sources like solar energy, wind or hydro powered energy sourcesAdapting Rain Water Harvesting to promote water conservationUsing electric or hybrid vehicles that run on biodiesel and ethanol gas, which leads to lesser pollution and is also easy on the pocket.Using tree free paper made from bamboo or hemp, to control deforestation.Using Green furniture in your home made from bamboo or harvested hard wood.

Another good way to promote sustainability in India are the CSR initiatives that are adapted by the corporate sector. India is among the leading nations to contribute towards innovation and technological development. Indian too is adapting the international Green Technology initiative, which is the next level of technology. The main aim of Greentech is to generating newer and cleaner renewable energy resources and inventing machinery that promotes sustainable living.

Greentech in Daily Life

Though Greentech is applied by the corporate structure, most of its initiatives can be used in daily life by the common man. Here are some Green technology initiatives that can be commonly used in the corporate sector as well as our daily lives.

Recycling waste to create a completely new product that can be used as raw material.Planting potted plants in the house or in your surroundings will help in air r purification.Recycling water, water purification or Rain water harvesting for consumptionControl the use of non-renewable energy resources like diesel and natural gas and adapt renewable energy resources like solar energy, turbine energy etc for fuel.Using energy conservation devices like CFL lights.Reusing, purifying and treating waste products for waste management.Using material like bamboo, harvested hard wood, recyclable metal etc for construction and furnishing.

These small initiatives can make a huge difference and a strong impact for India to turn into a sustainable society.

Steering India towards New Educational Initiatives

Steering India towards New Educational Initiatives | Sustainable Development in India | Scoop.it

www.wipro.org

Over the past decades the economy of Indian has grown in leaps and bounds and to maintain the pace of growth the mass educational scenario also needs to be focused upon. The diversity of India is fascinating indeed but this assortment of cultures and differences in the way of lifestyle makes it a rather difficult task to plan out an educational system that would be appropriate even for the remote corners of the country. With the government, NGOs and the corporate working out to take educational initiatives that would benefit the masses the task is becoming easier and education does not anymore seem to be a distant dream for the people of India.

Education in Indian has lately gained the recognition of the world. Many students who aspire to attain higher education come to India from foreign countries too. Though the problem of illiteracy is still a concern but this country amazes the world with its immense pool of talent in all fields. Of late there has been a lot of developmental work that has highlighted the existing loopholes in the existing methodologies and curriculum. These short comings have been acted upon and changes have been incorporated in syllabus of various courses and dynamic amendments have been done to the methodologies to suit the needs of various sections of the society. The government as well as private institutions in India have now realised the value of ongoing teachers training and how is it important to keep up with the cutting edge technological development that is taking place all around the world. The modern day education in India incorporates contemporary infrastructural facilities and in various occasions is well connected to E-learning also. Computer literacy among the faculty in institutions is also one of the major agendas that the education department is stressing upon. India every year attracts a large number of students from China, U.S.A, South Africa, Canada, U.K, France, Germany and Australia along with many other countries.

Educational initiatives have not been the focus in higher education only. The primary level has also been given great importance as the government pledges to provide education to all the children in the country. To this end the corporate and the NGOs have also played a major role. Many of the big businesses as a social responsibility cater for education in remote areas to the under privileged sections of the society. Many of them are involved with directly imparting education through rural schools where as some donate funds to renovate school buildings, provide better infrastructural facilities, procure books and also invest in teacher training programmes. The schools that provide education to disabled children in the country also get benefits towards educations from various business houses, who weep aside special funds for the betterment of the various sections of the society without and intention of making profits.

This contribution towards educational initiatives in India in well planned manner by the governmental organizations as well as the private sectors has given the different sections of the society a positive push towards attaining a firm base in educational fields. Students from remote corners of the country today are coming ahead to prove their worth, flourishing in many professional fields to India proud.

Sustainability through Responsible Business Practices

Sustainability through Responsible Business Practices | Sustainable Development in India | Scoop.it

Sustainability                                                                                                                                                                                                                issues have become much more than just a window-dressing for the corporate community. By assuming responsible business strategies and sustainable company practices today’s companies have a chance of increasing their capital and market advantages, gaining competitive edge, and boosting the value of their shareholders. The ever growing demand for ‘greener’ products in the present conscious market has opened up new avenues where the far sighted and the entrepreneurs with sharp-eyes can really reap great rewards.

 Responsible Business Practices

Every Business has its own approach, work practice and ethics which it follows for planning, executing and managing its business for reaping benefits. Responsible business practices refer to the positive impacts that a business has on the environment as well as the society through its ways of conducting business. These ways include methods of production of goods and services, interaction with stakeholders, employee management, safety and training, relation with suppliers, customers, investors and communities. A responsible business makes sure to minimise its negative impacts on the ecology as well as the society at large and works towards the benefit of the environment and the diverse community.

Responsibilities of a Business towards Sustainability

A corporate that owns the responsibility of its way of conducting business:

• Complies with rules and laws that are laid out by the countries where all the business operates. It also fulfils all the responsibilities that are expected out of it towards its shareholders as well as the community catering for finances.

• Sets rules that guides its employees in the right direction and manoeuvres them towards ethical decision making where there are chances of hidden conflict arising from common interest, bribery, financial incentive as well as political involvement.

• Lays down principles at the workplace that deliver scope for a congenial atmosphere among the employees.  It generates the feeling of mutual respect, healthy competition and freedom of expression.  This kind ob business provides equal opportunity without discriminating   on the basis of gender and community.

• Is committed towards adhering to standards laid down for the health and safety of its employees.

• Sticks to safety standards for the products it manufactures for the market.

• Makes use of responsible environmental management practices for all its operations, whether manufacturing of waste management.

• Follows fair and transparent review process for talent appreciation among the employees.

• Engages in beneficial interactive activities and relationship with communities at large and also works towards the benefit of the environment.

• Works towards training its employees to improve employability skills and focuses on their ongoing career development to improve productivity.

• Sets clear expectations from business relationship with suppliers, distributors and contractors with in ethical means.

A responsible business seeks proper guidance and assistance under uncertainties to perform operations that leads to sustainability. It encourages the stakeholders to raise concerns and queries regarding the ways in which business is conducted and maintains a transparent approach of accessing its effects on the environment and the society. It promotes community involvement and advocates volunteer activities as a chief component of their commitment towards corporate responsibility as well as actively supports and serves the requirements of the local communities. These commitments can work towards benefiting healthcare, promoting education, preserving the environment, helping overcome gender bias along with any other concerns that the society faces today.

Achieving Sustainable Development through Social Responsibility

Achieving Sustainable Development through Social Responsibility | Sustainable Development in India | Scoop.it

Sustainability is no more a concern that remains embedded in theories and are read in books. It is more than a matter of fashion and discussions. Sustainability is a concept to be acted upon and is here to stay. It is now a priority for governments, individuals as well as the corporate and has become a social responsibility for all at every level. Organizations are now embedding sustainability at the very core of their business strategies and operations to make the existence of the larger society and theirs “future-proof.”

The Innate Meaning

To understand how sustainability can be incorporated at all levels, the meaning of sustainability has to be understood.

The most accepted definition of sustainability and sustainable development has been explained as, “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” This definition encompasses two main concepts, one of ‘need’ and the other of ‘limitations’. The need is essentially the basic requirements that are required by individuals throughout the globe and the limitations are pointed at the ruthless use of resources and creation of waste and pollution that threatens the environment to an extent beyond repair.

www.wipro.org

All progressive societies look towards development which involves a transformation or advancement of the society as well as the economy. In theory a developmental path that is sustainable is easy to be planned but to adhere to a sustainable development there has to be strict regulations and developmental policies laid out by governments as well as organizations with in their working boundaries. To maintain physical sustainability, equilibrium has to be maintained in use of resources as well as equal access to resources as far as various sections of the society are concerned.

The key objective of development is to satisfy human needs and desires. There is a vast disparity in access to essential needs like food, shelter, clothing, wealth and jobs if different countries are compared and even within countries themselves. Moreover that is not the only essential that people aspire for; they also look forward to a better quality of life. To keep up with aspirations in a world where poverty and inequity are widespread the ecology is being jeopardised and there is an immediate requirement for mending with a sustainable development process that will be able to cater for the basic needs and aspirations of the present generations while extending opportunities to secure a better life situation for generations ahead.

Achieving Social Goals

Social responsibility and sustainable development go hand in hand and are inseparable. The goals towards social and economic development therefore should be defined by all countries in terms of sustainability, be it developed or developing, industrialised or agriculture oriented.

Governments of all countries should work hand in hand with the corporate and the people towards processes that lead to a sustainable path which will help the society at large to benefit in the long run. The countries all over the globe are connected by space and water, thus what one does affects the others. Social responsibility towards the environment and the society as a broad based concept with a strategic framework including different stakeholders will ensure a better tomorrow for everyone.
