Climate Change Linked to Waterborne Diseases in Inuit Communities | Sustainable Development Assignment | Scoop.it

As global warming triggers heavier rainfall and faster snowmelt in the Arctic, Inuit communities in Canada are reporting more cases of illness attributed to pathogens that have washed into surface water and groundwater, according to a new study.

Climate Will Pose Next Threat to Refugees from Fighting and Food Shortages in Mali: Scientific American

Climate Will Pose Next Threat to Refugees from Fighting and Food Shortages in Mali: Scientific American | Sustainable Development Assignment | Scoop.it

Refugee workers in the Sahel region where thousands of Malian refugees are fleeing violence in their country said this week they are witnessing firsthand the knotted challenges of food security, climate change and conflict in Africa.

Alice Thomas, climate displacement manager for Refugees International, said tens of thousands of destitute Malians are pouring into countries already hit hard by starvation, lack of water and crop failures. Speaking from Dakar, Senegal, after two weeks assessing camps in Niger and Burkina Faso, Thomas said communities have opened up their villages to Malian refugees.

But, she and others worried, it could be just a matter of time before the stress from thousands of newcomers -- and their livestock -- reaches a breaking point.

"When the refugees started coming to Niger in early January, they wanted to stay with the local communities, and the local communities opened their doors. People have so little in terms of food, and they shared what they had. They look at these people as brothers," Thomas said.

Some Like it Cold: effects of global warming

Some Like it Cold: effects of global warming | Sustainable Development Assignment | Scoop.it

Polar regions have suffered dramatically the consequences of global warming: ice melting, rising temperatures and the consequent transformation of flora and fauna are just few of the deep changes that marked these regions in an irreversible manner and will influence future human life and activities.
This visualization aims to highlight the main factors that have brought these changes. The top graph shows the relationships data between temperature, carbon dioxide concentration & sea-ice in the last century- we have then developed two different future trends.
The polar regions system map, designed as the structure of an ice crystal, shows the complex tangle of relationships and flows, highlighting the importance of each element for the whole system's balance.
Ice is in the centre of the visualization, as it’s the core of the entire polar environment and influences all other characters, while on the top are greenhouse gases- the primary responsible of increasing temperature and of climatic mutation in Arctic and Antarctic.
The analysis shows crearly how polar regions heavily suffer a phenomenon to which they contribute minimally, but provoking chilling consequences which involve the whole world...

A new `Climate Normal' needed | Making our future sustainable

The impact of climate change on investment and development is fundamental but is yet to be appreciated, or some in cases even understood. One related issue is a seemingly obscure technical calculation, the use of “Climate Normals” – a standard way of estimating the weather expected in a particular location for any given day. Such estimates have enormous significance for planning power plants, ports, water systems, roads, and long-lived infrastructure.

The difference between temperatures in the ‘70s (a cool period) and the ‘00s (the warmest decade on record) can mean large increases in summer peak demand. The planning of water supply and demand will similarly be dramatically affected with change in temperature and precipitation. Getting it wrong can mean serious under or over investment, with social as well as economic disruption.

Arctic sea ice extent small as never before

Arctic sea ice extent small as never before | Sustainable Development Assignment | Scoop.it

Alerting message from the Arctic: The extent the the Arctic sea ice has reached on Sep. 8 with 4.240 million km2 a new historic minimum . Physicists of the University of Bremen now confirm the apprehension existing since July 2011 that the ice melt in the Arctic could further proceed and even exceed the previous historic minimum of 2007. It seems to be clear that this is a further consequence of the man-made global warming with global consequences. Directly, the livehood of small animals, algae, fishes and mammals like polar bears and seals is more and more reduced.

Warming and the Water Cycle: More than Just a Faster Wetter Wet ... | Sustainable Development Assignment | Scoop.it

"One of the most serious consequences of global warming is its predicted impact on the water cycle. A new study, described below, presents evidence that the global water cycle is changing even faster than predicted."

Global warming is affecting the salinity of ocean water. This is creating a nightmare among places that depend on a constant flow of rain. Because of the complexity of Global Warming it is assumed that some areas will become wetter, some will become drier. It's the places inbetween that might see the most volatile of weather. Floods one year, droughts the next, trying to predict what will occur on a routine basis is now nearly impossible by just looking at historical records.
