To build a sustainable world, academics need to tear down the Ivory Tower

To build a sustainable world, academics need to tear down the Ivory Tower | Sustainable building | Scoop.it
Avoiding societal collapse means building bridges between science and the rest of the world.

Via Garry Rogers
Royce Beale's insight:
GR:  We shouldn’t demolish ivory towers, but scientists whose research has obvious applications should spend more time making public presentations. Moreover, though science should never be constrained by the need to be practical or applicable, it might be appropriate to spend some time on critical social problems. Issues such as mass extinction and global warming have entered crisis stages. Guaranteeing a future for pure research justifies a little time spent on the problems.

What's the Best Social Network Ever? A Table + Two Chairs! | Sustainable building | Scoop.it
People do business with people, not with technology. Whether you are a person or a brand, to truly build long-lasting personal relationship with another person or a brand advocate you need way more than just a couple of tweets and a LinkedIn connection request, you need face-to-face time.

Passive House getting active about promoting energy efficiency

Passive House getting active about promoting energy efficiency | Sustainable building | Scoop.it
Passive House is the new kid on Canada’s sustainable-building block, but it was standing-room only for one session at the Buildex Vancouver trade show for a group of Victoria-based acolytes to explain their six-unit apartment project. The building is designed to replace a six-unit rental property on the site, but will be built to Passive House standards and will use 90-per-cent less energy than a typical building.

Always a difference of opinion. I have friends who argue that global warming / climate change is NOT man made and the fact that we kill flora and fauna with abandonment does not even register on the radar. I keep saying: Nothing will change until a very, very serious catastrophe strikes. :(
Garry Rogers's comment, March 29, 12:12 PM
It may even take a short-cycle series of impossibly serious catastrophes.
pdeppisch's comment, March 29, 12:14 PM
I think human made climate change has passed the point of no return! We are going to have those "short-cycle series of impossibly serious catastrophes"

Change Leader, Change Thyself

Change Leader, Change Thyself | Sustainable building | Scoop.it

Organizational change is inseparable from individual change. Simply put, change efforts often falter because individuals overlook the need to make fundamental changes in themselves. Anyone who pulls the organization in new directions must look inward as well as outward.
