The Empire State Building is going green in more ways than one.


The Empire State Building was never intended to be low-impact. It was built as a symbol of the power of New York--and today, it's a surprising case study in the power of efficiency. A series of cost-effective, energy-efficient retrofits have dramatically reduced energy waste in the Empire State Building, saving $2.4 million in operating costs in the first year alone. In the next few years, when the project is complete, the building is expected to reduce its energy use by nearly 40 percent--and save about $4.4 million each year...

SHoP Architects has shared with us the B2 Bklyn building which will be the first of the residential developments for Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn, New York to break ground, scheduled for 2012. Standing at 32 storeys, it will be the world’s tallest pre-fab building, saving both on cost and waste.

On the shore of an idyllic white sandy beach on New Zealand's Coromandel Peninsula rests an elegant hut. The site lies within the coastal erosion zone, where all building must be removable. This is taken literally and the hut is designed on two thick wooden sleds for movement back up the site or across the beach and onto a barge.

The hut is a series of simple design moves. The aesthetic is natural and reminiscent of a beach artifact/perhaps a surf-life-saving or observation tower.

The two storey shutter on the front facade winches open to form an awning, shading the interior from summer sun while allowing winter sun to enter.

The hut is totally sustainable from its modest size to the use of timber in its cladding, structure, lining and joinery and from its worm tank waste system to the separate potable grey water tanks.

In the village of Sabon Yelwa the Developmental Association for Renewable Energies (DARE) has instigated an ingenious scheme to transform the region’s litter problem into a positive future for the community through the construction of new residences.

This is amazing!! It is wonderful to see people living in poverty coming up with these wonderful inventions. This s not only helping people live in the poor society but also recycling and saving the environment. I think if everyone begins to keep this trend going that many people living in poverty will soon have a better living environment. This is a great way of communities helping one another to become better.

whats really interesting about this is the twenty times strenth then bricks building which are normally the buildings built in Nigeria and most of Africa. Another interesting fact is the resistance to earthquake which is very important.
