An Architect’s Live Work Studio on Formentera

An Architect’s Live Work Studio on Formentera | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it
Here's another classic villa from the studio of Marià Castelló Martínez on the island of Formentera.

In Es Pujol De Sera they realise their contemporary version of the spare architectural tradition of Formentera. Set far from the sea in the inland region, one entire side of the compact and simple live/work space houses an architecture studio. The program is work on one side, live on the other. Even the plan displays the austere geometry that is their signature. The spacious studio provides an unhurried setting for devising thoughtful architecture. The working side of the house is just as open and inviting as the basking and lazing side.

The villa is surrounded by the smell of rosemary, and is set in a region with wheat and barley fields. The topography inland is flat and the inertia of these surroundings is reflected in the flat affect of the villa itself. A small setback around the edge in section creates the sensation that the building is floating over the site to transition between the manmade and the natural environment...

LiveWork and Be Sustainable, Net Zero

LiveWork and Be Sustainable, Net Zero | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

With their LiveWork project for a net zero carbon development in Athens, Georgia, USA, Suzanne Steelman and Eric Laine from the Clemson School of Architecture won the first prize of the Dow Solar Design to Zero competition.

The aim is to reduce carbon emissions in the built environment and live in an environmentally friendly way, while enjoying a feeling of community at the same time. Like other examples of zero carbon developments, such as c_life in Helsinki, LiveWork stresses on the importance of behavioural change in order to truly bring about a sustainable way of living. The architects of the LiveWork project in Georgia define a net zero carbon building as “environmentally, socially and economically responsible”. Only by embodying these three characteristics can we achieve a truly sustainable design...

Space-Savvy Sustainable Design for a Live-Work Studio...

Space-Savvy Sustainable Design for a Live-Work Studio... | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it
Michael Fifield, AIA, principal of Fifield Architecture + Urban Design in Eugene, Ore., believes true sustainable design must address the problem of land consumption.

“Higher densities are really needed in the future,” he says. “One way of doing that is for people to have smaller living units. You can take a small building and effectively make it feel much larger.”
Hanna Yoshimura, an artist who lives primarily in Japan, knew of Fifield's interest in compact design. She asked him to design a live/work studio behind it where she could spend two to three months per year. Fifield obliged with a trim, 269-square-foot structure. Its windows borrow views of neighboring gardens, and its south-facing glass wall opens to a deck that extends the living room outside. The two upstairs lofts' ladders, half walls, and exposed rafters are designed to take up as little physical and visual space as possible. On the main level, a radiant heat concrete floor eliminates the need for bulky radiators. The floor's control joints match a good-luck tatami mat layout, in a subtle nod to the client's Japanese heritage...
