New York's 'Folded' School of Engineering And Applied Science by Perkins+Will

New York's 'Folded' School of Engineering And Applied Science by Perkins+Will | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

The Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Sciences was designed by Perkins+Will in New York, with an intriguing and innovative sustainable design.

The concept, characterised by an irregular folded-like structure wrapped in copper, aims to mark a new 'Front Door' for the School of Engineering. The building is organized around a multi-story gallery that allows students to circulate easily through the space. The intriguing learning space is vibrant and breezy; students can sit, discuss projects or share ideas over a cup of coffee in the multi-story student lounge.

Seeking LEED Gold, efficient strategies include improved building shell insulation, high-performance windows, energy efficient lighting design with occupancy and photo sensor control.

Portland International Jetport wins LEED Gold certification | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

Designed by Gensler, the expansion invoved construction of a new 160,000 square foot terminal, expanded security checkpoints and a sky bridge between the terminal and parking.

The design of the new terminal roots its inspiration to the natural beauty and resources of Maine. The terminal has extensively used timber, which is a rare element in airport architecture. The facility was built to embrace several sustainable elements, which consist of natural daylighting, FSC-certified glue laminated structural timbers, and low-maintenance, polished concrete floors.

The project has installed the state's largest geothermal system at the airport, which consist of 120 wells, which are 500 feet deep. The geothermal well assists the building to offset fuel costs by $150,000 a year.

The newest terminal of the airport is the second commercial airport in the US to be accredited with LEED certification.

Passive House Retreat in Rhode Island

Passive House Retreat in Rhode Island | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it
Recently I realized that we neglected to follow up on a Passive House project discussed in pre-construction way back in March 2010.

Located in Little Compton, the 1,200 square-foot retreat has three bedrooms, one of which is a kid’s loft, two bathrooms, a tub room, and an open kitchen, dining and living area.

The handsome, gable-roofed structure saves energy with the combination of super insulation (R40 walls, R40 slab, and R70 roof), air sealing, high-performance windows, passive solar heating, a heat recovery ventilator, and an energy monitoring system, according a profile by ZED.

Other than LEED and Energy Star certification, Passive House certification is in progress.

Little Compton was finished with a modern Poggenpohl kitchen, contemporary furniture from Addo Novo, no- and low-VOC materials, paints, and sealants, and a whole-house ventilation system.

Nelson Cultural Center: LEED Gold at the American Swedish Institute, Minneapolis

Nelson Cultural Center: LEED Gold at the American Swedish Institute, Minneapolis | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

The American Swedish Institute received a new addition with the LEED Gold-designed Nelson Cultural Center by HGA in Minneapolis.

The 34,000 sq ft addition provides space for education and cultural facilities for contemporary exhibitions, administrative offices, collections care, and expanded programs. Designed by locally-headquartered firm HGA, the new extension incorporates contemporary design, traditional Swedish aesthetics and a number of sustainable strategies. The Nelson Cultural Center is anticipating LEED Gold certification due to its sustainable building strategies, which include geothermal heating and cooling, a green roof and much more.

Sustainability was an important aspect of the design, and the institute anticipates LEED Gold certification for its efforts – which would make it the first museum in Minnesota with such accolades.
