Paläon is located at the edge of the town of Schöningen and the site of a remarkable, world-famous Stone-Age find: the Schöningen Spears – the oldest ever hunting weapons used by man. It is now also home to the new and emblematic research and experience centre that reflects the location in concept and form.


The building conveys the location’s importance as an archaeological site by rising above the natural topography like layered earth. Its futuristic shape stems from the horizontal landscape and the building’s volume, ground plan and section are defined by references to the landscape and lines of sight. The slightly offset contours create subtly different internal and external spaces. Designed with reflective cladding, the volume mirrors the landscape, with large recessed window openings that underscore the expressive dynamism of the architecture.

Since 1997, the group Observatorium, based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, has been committed to creating relationships between art, landscape and society. Designed to be for the common good, their work aims to create a sense of place.


Waiting for the River is a living bridge, with benches, hostel-style rooms, and eco-bathroom  - entirely made of used planks. The 38-metre long zigzag bridge anticipates the new clean river valley Emscher, which is now still an open sewer. It sits over the waste land that will be the site of pastoral landscape in ten years time. It serves as an example for the future development of the Emscher Park in the Ruhr area for which the authorities have coined the description ‘productive park’.

Intended as a temporary structure the house will now be reconstructed and made permanent.

The new research building in Stuttgart is designed on a grid for a highly flexible workplace that serves as a dynamic framework for ongoing research activities. The Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research comprises offices, laboratories, meeting and conference facilities.

“The grid structure of the research centre ensures a high degree of mobility and freedom to change and expand the building”, explains Design Director Louis Becker, Henning Larsen Architects. “The building has a rational design and is organised in modules. 

Carefully integrated into the surrounding context, the building features various heights that relate to the city and adjacent buildings. The building will create a new, distinctive entrance to Stuttgarter Engineering Park and provide an insight into the ongoing research.

Made by the hands of community - A field chapel has been built in the Odenwald. An architectural firm, 12 students from Chicago and local craftsmen realized the wooden construction.

With no funding or even a plot of land, Reverend Moser-Feesche had taken it upon himself, with the help of a local architectural firm, to build a chapel. In order to realize this nonprofit project they would assembled a small army of volunteers, recruited from as far as the US.

Under their professor's direction, 12 students from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago drew up plans for the chapel. In addition to the group of students and architecture firm, local craftsmen and the church co-operative played an instrumental role. A farmer offered the pastor a plot of land, the wood needed came in the form of donated construction timber processed at a local sawmill, and the gravel for the courtyard came from the River Main.

After just eight weeks of hard teamwork the community was bestowed with a new chapel on the aforementioned hill. The façade of the modest building is a mesh of diagonally-angled wooden planks. From a courtyard, intended as a representation of the temporal, one steps through an open foyer into the actual chapel at the base of the nine-meter-tall tower.

The interdenominational chapel provides a peaceful place of retreat for anyone who may pass by.

Envisioned and implemented by German studio Titus Bernhard Architekten, House 11 x 11 gives the overall impression of a small, compact home. The 1,960 square foot contemporary abode in Munich, Germany, was developed to serve the needs of a family in an area that captures the serenity of natural elements. According to the architects, “House 11 x 11 is an icon for its users, symbolic and built with a new method of construction: the exterior walls and the wooden roof made of prefabricated elements are covered by a vertical wood-lamella façade without counter-battens, converging on the ridge of the roof. A pronounced graphic character is the result, reinforced by the variable density and very precise setting of the lamellae, including the integration of the wooden window frames”.

The inner layout is based on continuity and the core of the house is an open plan living area, characterized by a minimalist, yet inviting design...

The Minimum House was designed by studio Scheidt Kasprusch Architekten and is located in Klausdorf, Germany. The 1,615 square foot contemporary home, structured on two levels, is a prototype for a serial holiday residence. According to the architects, the project is offered under the label “minimumhouse” , all furniture and fittings included: “The concept was developed by the ideal of a house with maximum outdoor impressions and also by making full use of the solar yields for the building. The reflections of glass and light make the three-side glassed building shells appear immaterial. The team consisting of architects, engineers, building physicists and executing companies developed a modular building concept, that allows a contemporary open-plan living with high ecological and economic standards“. Some of the sustainable features of this home include a solar system placed on the extensively vegetated flat roof, a soil sensor, ceiling-mounted radiation heating and controlled ventilation.

The +Energy House lies down as a flat structure on the sloping site and forms at the upper floor a platform that connects inside and outside together and offers a magnificent view of the countryside. The two-storey structure incorporates mixed construction systems: concrete on the ground floor, with wood upstairs.

Additionally, dowelled laminated timber elements enable the structure to be entirely built without glues, with a clients request for pollution-free construction and ecological building materials.

Especially developed for a large family in Stuttgart, Germany, the Strauss Residence was envisioned by Alexander Brenner Architekten.


According to the architects, the house consists of “two autonomous house-halves, which if required can be combined in parts or completely. The entire building was created according to ecological standpoints and supplied almost exclusively with renewable energy. The heating energy is provided by air source heat pumps. At extremely low temperatures these peaks are met with a low temperature gas boiler. Water is heated up by high performance solar collectors."

Set in the picturesque rural landscape of Langenargen, Germany, this modern farmhouse shelters family life surrounded by a blooming orchard.

Designed by k_m architektur, the contemporary structure was built with the surrounding farmstead in mind. Generous overhangs shelter the expansive glazing of this elongated floor plan, covering the east, west and south facade. Interior living spaces are permanently exposed to natural sunlight coming from the floor-to-ceiling windows. Shaded by light curtains, the living room, dining and kitchen share the same space, interacting to create a living area exposed to outdoor panoramas.

A photovoltaic system mounted on the flat roof helps reduce the energy costs, while the heating pipeline in the farm building takes on the rest of the energy demands. Slightly raised from the ground, the house appears to be floating, while the extensive use of wood defines both the interiors and the exteriory. There was no need for a second story, as the main spaces were cleverly compacted to shape the necessary living conditions adorned with modern details...

The Federal Republic of Germany has selected the proposal of Laboratory for Visionary Architecture (LAVA) for the Green Climate Fund Headquarters, Bonn.

LAVA's proposal for the headquarters is an 'ecological model project' and demonstrates their motto: 'green is the new black.'

The new building will feature innovative climate protection solutions like; facades that are are articulated according to building orientation, surfaces that integrate various regenerative energy production methods, and photo-voltaics & bioreactors that demonstrate the application of latest technologies...

According to the architects: “The Minimum House was developed with the idea that a house with maximum outdoor impressions should make full use of solar opportunities... The modular building concept allowed for a contemporary open-plan space with high ecological and economic standards.

The annual heating requirements answer to the low-energy standard with soil sensor, ceiling-mounted radiation heating, controlled ventilation and heat recovery support; a system constantly supervises and regulates the home.

Additionally, all the materials used to build the contemporary property have been chosen in accordance with sustainable criteria.”
