MM house in Sao Paulo, Brazil by studio mk27 | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

Brazilian practice studio mk27 has completed the 'MM house' in Braganca Paulista, a wooded municipality of Sao Paulo.


The dwelling consists of two perpendicular rectangular footprints, and features a green roof that blends into the landscape.

A folding screen of retractable slender wooden slats wraps the entire envelope along the exterior glass wall, softening any direct sunlight, with all the bedrooms situated along the eastern elevation facing the valley. The indoor/outdoor gathering space is completely open to the elements where the solid building mass intersects with a wooden deck, allowing occupants to fully engage with the environment. The public living room and tv room at either side of this outdoor room contain large glass doors, enabling a strong visual connection among all the shared spaces.

The timber terrace extends out towards the lower area of the site, ending in a swimming pool upon a concrete plinth that reflects the picturesque environment.

Each program consists of an eco friendly and creative cultural space and green area. Metamorphosis 1 is the remodel of a home in Chile by architects Jose Ulloa Davet + Delphine Ding. The project is organized according to a helical path which, through the extension of an existing deck and the overhang of the new room, allows the user to go up to two new panoramic terraces on the house.

The skin on the project is designed as an autonomous unit, through modulated square openings with measures based on a 30 centimeters module and a skin with a changing rhythm. New areas of the house blend into the existing through the ventilated timber skin, whose function is to avoid accumulations of water and moisture in the structure wall...

Last week, as spring's balmy temperatures took a temporary dip into glacier territory, the two founding partners of architecture and urbanism firm Weiss/Manfredi led a hard hat tour of their new visitors center at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (opening in a mere six weeks!). Luckily, magnolias and cherry trees were already in bloom and a bright sun illuminated the mostly-transparent structure. The deceptively modest structure is nestled into a hill on the northeast corner of the site, so 50 percent of its envelope benefits from thermal efficiency. And like any ground-up civil structure worth its salt, it's sustainable, with a geoexchange system comprised of 28 heating and cooling wells, radiant floor heating, and landscaping made of postconsumer recycled building materials...

Abu Dhabi’s new inspiring architectural design might lead to even further research into the world of transforming interior and exterior environments with ingenious creativity. Al Bahar Towers housing the Abu Dhabi Investment Council Headquarters are now part of Aedas Architects' portfolio, rising tall to shape a new era in modern office building design. Inspired by a traditional Islamic lattice shading device named “mashrabiya”, the interesting geometric shapes enveloping the towers offer a powerful visual impact while intelligently protecting the interiors from excessive heat gain. Upcoming weather for Abu Dhabi shows a week of temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit with 0% chance of rain. In such extreme conditions, architects practicing environmental design as their top priority are up against a tough battle. Never mind that the sand can compromise the structural integrity of the building, the intense heat and glare can render a comfortable indoor environment relatively impossible if not properly addressed.

 

For Abu Dhabi’s newest pair of towers, Aedas Architects designed a responsive facade which takes cultural cues from the “mashrabiya”, a traditional Islamic lattice shading device.

Completed in June 2012, the 145 meter towers’ Masharabiya shading system was developed by the computational design team at Aedas. Using a parametric description for the geometry of the actuated facade panels, the team was able to simulate their operation in response to sun exposure and changing incidence angles during the different days of the year.

The screen opperates as a curtain wall, sitting two meters outside the buildings’ exterior on an independent frame. Each triangle is coated with fiberglass and programmed to respond to the movement of the sun as a way to reduce solar gain and glare. In the evening, all the screens will close...

Eva Samuel Architects and Associates designed this school in Paris, France.

The building’s envelope is a response to several environmental aims: visual protection, increased natural light to counteract the surrounding solar screens, no thermal bridges, natural ventilation and double flux in winter. This school is the first to comply with the City of Paris’s climate plan. The result is a thick façade with varied reliefs – bay, alcove, and concave windows – used horizontally on the roof as skylights and to house air treatment machinery and ventilation chimneys. These multi-form elements enliven and dematerialise the façades.

The atmosphere inside the school is gentle and serene. The only colours are those of the materials themselves, such as the wood of the false ceilings and the bay windows. The façade’s thickness creates a strong sense of protection and minimises outlook from neighbouring towers. The children enjoy taking over the micro-spaces generated by the façade’s thickness, using them as mini-living rooms, for reading, tea parties, hiding, etc...

The lot must define the most significant western visual boundary. Also, it is the natural background of the boulevard’s urban axis, the green space that unifies the whole of the Álava Technology Park, since its beginning.

The buildings are linked in a to their natural surroundings., and their geometry frames the views towards the hillside. In the North building this opening is achieved through an open entrance atrium, which enhances the presence of the hillside forest, with the use of a frontal overhang that liberates the main façade. In the South building, the landscape views are achieved through the overhangs on its sides.
The double façade provides the buildings with an air mattress that increases the thermal insulation by reducing losses in winter and producing air circulation in the summer. Thus the air conditioning requirements are minimized and save great amounts of energy...
