The Obrenovac First Elementary School is the first established school in Belgrade, almost 200 years old. During the two centuries pupils of this school had no adequate indoor space for physical education and sports activities. 

From the very beginning the idea was to design low budget, energy efficient and sustainable building with no unnecessary details.

As Obrenovac Municipality is close to the river Sava banks, it is under the influence of the underground water. This was the crucial technical problem which had to be resolved from the first preliminary design phase. Through design process, the solution for these challenges has been successfully found by designing the waterproof concrete hull, 5 meters deep in the ground, just few centimeters over the highest underground water level. This concept provided some kind of waterproof box, as boat sink, for all premises inside.

Chicago studio Studio Gang Architects has revealed plans to convert a decommissioned power plant in Wisconsin, USA, into new facilities for an arts college.

Beloit College has asked Studio Gang to develop the site between the institution's existing campus and the riverfront of Beloit, located close to the state border with Illinois. 

The decommissioned coal-burning power plant will be overhauled to include both educational and recreational spaces for students, including a coffee shop, lounges, a conference centre, a lecture hall and a theatre.

"We're excited to work with Beloit College to transform an outmoded source of electricity into a wellspring of human energy," said studio founder Jeanne Gang. "Our hope is that by reclaiming the Beloit waterfront for people, our project will inspire other communities around the globe to see human well-being as vitally interconnected with a healthy and clean environment."

London based Heatherwick Studio have won a competition to design a Learning Hub at Nanyang Technological UniversitySingapore. The construction of the Hub, part of a £360 million scheme, will be the first redevelopment of its campus in twenty years. Having already won the BCA Green Mark Platinum Award for Sustainability from the Singaporean Government, the design seeks to redefine the aspiration of a university building. Within this new context the purpose of the university is to “foster togetherness and sociability” so that students can meet and learn in a space that encourages collaboration.

In Dongnai, Vietnam, Vo Trong Nghia Architects has completed the construction of ‘farming kindergarten’, a large pre-school designed to accommodate up to 500 children. The project is envisioned as a model of sustainability set within the tropical climate, allowing the school’s young inhabitants to understand the importance of sustainable education and design.

A fully accessible green roof drawn in a triple-ring-shape creates three courtyards enclosed by the looping structure, providing safe and secure playgrounds for the kindergarten’s occupants. The different levels and gradients created by the building’s spiral form offer a series of distinct outdoor learning environments, where children are able to forge a close relationship with the natural world.

My husband CANNOT live without his sunshine. Here in Lisbon they used ceramic tiles to move more light into the rooms. We angle a mirror to reflect the sunshine into our kitchen on cold days - toasty!

The new Yale School of Management (SOM) Campus will unite the SOM’s faculty departments together at a single location for the first time. The building has been designed in response to an integrated curriculum that has the potential to reinvent business school education.

The ground floor contains the public space, cafes and auditorium, with the classrooms and study areas on the upper floors. The classrooms are contained within eight double-height oval drums, visible through the glazed façade. From the architect. BIG conceived a large multifunctional space that could be used for sports, graduation ceremonies and social events.The new hall comprises a sunken 1,100 m2 space, placed five meters (16.5 feet) below the ground in the center of the school’s courtyard, ensuring a good indoor climate, low environmental impact and high architectural quality.

The exterior wooden decked surface consists of untreated oak wood and white enamel coated steel benches, also designed by BIG. The only light sources at night are the benches and BIG designed seating which are outfitted with tiny LED lights beneath lighting up the entire courtyard.The edge of the roof is designed as a long social bench, its lattice design ensures the penetration of daylight below. Solar panels placed strategically around the existing buildings provide heat for the hall.

Thomas Heatherwick's Learning Hub for Nanyang Technological University democratizes the learning experience with cylindrical towers.


The design resists the idea that university buildings need be compositions of artificially lit, endless corridors with a distinct cylindrical shapes that maximize daylight and encourages the incidental meeting of fellow entrepreneurs, scientists or colleagues. 55 tutorial rooms are devoid of traditional hallways and organized around a central space that links the towers together.


Students can enter the corner-free spaces from 360 degrees and engage with colleagues and professors on rooftop gardens. The upper floors and green rooftops enjoy views of picturesque synthetic and natural landscapes. Award-winning green measures include the use of hydrophilic polymers, a material process that eliminates the need for irrigation, vertical greenery and recycled concrete aggregate as a material. The design will be completed in 2014.

Communities located in harsh climates – such as Palm Springs, one of the driest spots in North America – are often criticized for the enormous resources that are expended to make the climate fit for humans.


A plan for a new college campus in the arid region, however, may change that perception. The firm of GA Architects and Engineers has recently unveiled Phase One of its plans for the new West Valley Campus at the College of the Desert in Palm Springs. According to HGA, despite the harsh climate, the new 119-acre site will become one of the most energy-efficient campuses in the United States and will actually produce more energy than it will consume.


“This project has forward-thinking goals that go beyond net-zero energy to embrace a ‘zero-plus plan’ that creates renewable clean energy rather than simply uses less energy,” said Patrick Thibaudeau, vice president of sustainable design at HGA.

Located at the University of Calgary, the Energy Environment Experiential Learning (EEEL) building is a five-story teaching facility that allows students to learn in an experiential and hands-on environment.

WIth approximately 11,000 sm of teaching laboratories and 2,500 sm of classroom space, space is provided for up to 3,000 sm of future research labs. The structural module and arrangement of the building systems allows the university long-term flexibility to convert spaces efficiently from one use to another.

The project also incorporates a number of solar control strategies, such as sculpted aluminum spandrel panels and solar shutters that actively track the sun to provide fully daylit but glare-free interior spaces. Additional environmental strategies include the use of thermal mass, an efficient envelope, natural ventilation, earth tubes, and low-energy systems, which contribute to the project using 45% less energy compared to a conventional laboratory building.  Low-flow fixtures and use of captured rain water mixed with recycled process water for toilet flushing reduces potable water use by 64%.

Jåttå Vocational School is designed as a small ‘town in town’ featuring a vibrant double-high central street surrounded by individual ‘urban quarters’, each with their own teaching environments and lecture rooms. 

The heart of the school – the central street comprising the main hall, canteen and resource centre – forms an active and vibrant gathering point offering a view of the green patios and roof landscape of the building as well as the workshops and study areas. A sequence of ramps and stairs lead from the entrance further up through the building and through the lecture hall, all the way up to the roof landscape offering a view of the scenery and fjord.

With its minimalist, floating architecture, the School forms the entrance to Stavanger’s new urban quarter by the fjord. The concentrated design enhances the way the building interacts with its surroundings and underlines its proximity and transparency. The double high windows allow daylight into the building, stimulating the learning process....

It’s hard for homes to be green. Despite long-term energy savings, it’s even harder for low-income homes to afford upfront costs of some sustainable materials. But ecological design doesn’t have to mean more “green” from your wallet. In fact, using recycled and sustainable material, as one local project has shown, can be both economically viable and environmentally friendly.

The San Antonio Alternative Housing Corporation (SAAHC) is a nonprofit organization that provides housing and support services for low and moderate income communities in the central Texas area.  When they construct new housing units, they want to minimize up-front construction costs as well as long-term operational expenses.  They were open to exploring alternate construction techniques, but wanted an opportunity to test the viability of these options.

As it happened, Taeg Nishimoto, Associate Dean of the UTSA College of Architecture, had been working for several years to develop a program that would give architecture students experience throughout the entire process of realizing a project from conception through construction...

The new Linares’ university district, designed by Canvas Arquitectos, emerged as a unique opportunity to define an urban structure that reinforces urban identity and creates a relationship that integrates the university uses with those of industrial research.

The new campus is sensitive to the landscape and topography as well as the mining and industrial condition defining since its founding in Linares. This sense of descent and discovery accused throughout the intervention.

Each building specifically addresses use and identity; courtyards articulate different scales and establish relationships with the landscape andl the surrounding geography. In addition to courtyards, a rooftop garden resolves climatic conditions.

Marcel Sembat High School in Sotteville-lès-Rouen, France by Archi5 is an example of how architecture uses technology in surprising ways. 

Part of a larger rehabilitation of the high school, the new workshop building features a series of linear bars, each with a sloped green roof. Small patios between these volumes open to create skylights, with daylight entering through large windows created by the offset of the linear volumes, illuminating the large workshops.

The environmental technology in the building is mostly passive. Located on a site between a park and the city with a large, the north-facing facade opens up to city views, while the southern side has smaller windows shaded by overhangs. The difference between the two heights creates the shape of the building, while the green roof helps deflect wind and creates a low-maintenance green plaza.

Este sorprendente proyecto se localiza en las proximidades de la ciudad de Rouen, al NO de París. 


Obra del estudio de arquitectura francés Archi5 en colaboración con B. Huidobro, ha sido premiado en el certamen Architizer A+ Awards de 2014 en la categoría de "Tipología". 


Como se puede observar en la imagen adjunta, su principal características es el techo verde con el que se ha cubierto el edificio destinado a la enseñanza de mecánica. La integración con un cercano parque urbano es impresionante.


La comunidad bonaerense de arquitectura y diseño Arqa se hizo eco de este proyecto en 2011, incluyendo en su entrada imágenes de algunos de los planos. En los mismos se puede apreciar que uno de los principales escollos que se tuvieron que salvar fue la calle que divide los distintos edificios de los que se compone el liceo. No obstante, el problema se solucionó con la construcción de un edificio-puente.

The project gives the Boston-based communications and arts school a permanent home on the west coast.

The 10-story, $85 million project will accommodate 217 students in suite-style housing located in the two vertical towers. These living spaces flank the academic and administrative core, which include classrooms, a state-of-the-art digital screening room, a lecture hall with distance-learning capabilities, performance spaces, editing suites, and more. 

Designed by architect Thom Mayne of Morphosis, the dynamic, aluminum-clad structure—really a self-contained campus—stands poised to become a symbol of its rapidly changing neighborhood.

Technological innovations echo the school’s own zeitgeist. Among the building’s energy-saving systems are exterior louvers that open or close automatically in response to the weather and the sun’s intensity. And two intriguing metal scrims, made from 17 different aluminum shapes that were digitally generated and manufactured, shade the interior faces of the residential towers.

The pavilion designed by Architecture Brio is located on the Magic Bus Centre for Experiential Learning, situated near Mumbai at the foot of the Western Ghats. Magic Bus is an NGO which seeks to educate and mentor children through outdoor “experiential” learning.  

The first phase of this project comprising of children’s dormitories, a dining pavilion, volunteers accommodation and a resources centre was designed by Rahul Mehrotra Associates. A challenge course with climbing walls, Jacob’s ladders and zip lines completed the first phase. Architecture Brio was asked to design the second phase of the project, which included proposals for staff accommodation, a facilitation center for corporates and the Laureus Learning Pavilion.

In the Thai town of Mae Sot, the CDC School (Children Development Center) hosts over 500 students and offers accommodation and education for refugees from the conflict in neighboring Myanmar.

The lack of space and the need for immediate accommodation has forced the School to present a new model of temporary low-cost dormitories that is easy to assemble and can be built by using as many recycled materials as possible.


Mae Tao Clinic commissioned Thailand-based architecture firm a.gor.a architects to design temporary dormitories and classroom buildings.

The first of four dormitories was built within four weeks, and meets the modus vivendi by fitting into the local environment in which it is located. The interior layout ensures an open and airy space that offers semi-privacy and includes storage space for the students. The building materials used are locally available and well known to their users, thus allowing for easy maintenance and resulting in low maintenance costs.

This new campus aims to create a unique and authentic identity for the growing Central Arizona College in the higher education marketplace while creating a highly sustainable prototype.


Masterplanned for significant growth in the next twenty years, three buildings and a central plant represent an initial phase that will create a campus design language for future development to follow.

Conceptually rooted in its historic agricultural roots and Native American legacy, the structures are conceived as a series of honest ‘academic sheds.’ Deep overhangs let interior academic spaces flow outdoors seamlessly. Corten steel and rammed earth create the primary exterior language eliminating the need for long term maintenance. Structural steel and galvanized acoustical decking create the main interior volumes, while continuous north facing clerestory glazing harvests daylight, coupled with numerous large ‘daylight scoops.'

Since 2002, the Solar Decathlon has involved over 90 teams and influenced thousands of collegiate participants in interdisciplinary research, design and construction of energy-efficient, solar-powered houses.

The Earth Sciences Building is located on the Vancouver campus of the University of British Columbia. It is the new home for three of UBC’s Science departments—Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Statistics, and the Pacific Institute of the Mathematical Sciences.


In addition to enhancing the growing links between each department by providing valuable opportunities for shared learning and collaboration, the ESB expands the Faculty of Science’s public face and helps to create a vibrant and animated centre for the Faculty on campus.

The wood structure provides a welcoming environment, and as an added environmental benefit, the 1,317 cubic meters of wood in the structure store 1,094 tonnes of carbon, the equivalent of taking 415 cars off the road for a year. To provide rain cover for pedestrians, a solid wood canopy wraps three sides of the project. It extends from inside the building, where it forms the interior ceiling finish of the museum and cafe, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior space...

It may look unassuming, but this sleek black box is the culmination of a two-year long collaboration of more than 50 students from 7 different faculties of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.


Initially envisioned by two architecture students and built for the European Solar Decathlon 2012 in Madrid, the goal of Odooproject was to encourage a new sustainable life by designing a house where as much time as possible can be spent outdoors.

Odoo’s square plan has two primary elements: the north half enclosure and the south half outdoor terrace, bordered by the ‘summer wall’ to the south. The design allows comfortable living inside or outside throughout the year as the seasons allow.

To provide a comfortable environment, as efficiently as possible, the house uses both active and passive systems. The compact form of Odoo reduces heat loss, while its organization means it has two south-facing facades. The glass façade exploits solar gain, to heat the interior during the winter, and the solar panels on the ‘summer wall’ generate power from the summer sun...
