Overlooking the ocean in Victoria, Australia, the Moonlight Cabin by Jackson Clements Burrows Architects is said to engage with the landscape’s ephemeral conditions. Modest in size, the residence answers the living needs of the owners, while making use of sustainable features: “The built form is fully screened in a spotted-gum rain screen that acts like a ‘goretex jacket’ to protect the cabin from the elements while the timber is free to move naturally in the changing climatic conditions. Its small footprint shelter (60m2) explores the boundaries of how small is too small, challenging conventional notions of what is actually necessary in our lives”, the architects explained.

This project added a kitchen, living area, dining area, bathroom, master bedroom, ensuite and two decks to a previously overlooked yet charming weatherboard cottage in the inner urban suburb of Prahran. Nestled on an intimate street, the existing house is one of a series of heritage protected cottages. In response to the north-facing block of land, a central courtyard was created between the weatherboard and modern extension in order to flood the open kitchen, living and dining area with natural light...

Like the iconic waterfront Sydney Opera House, the Wuxi Grand Theatre, built by Finland’s PES-Architects, benefits from its location.


Located on a manmade peninsula, the theater is highly visible from all directions- a prime spot that provided the opportunity to construct an eye-catching roof that places the building in a direct dialogue with the city’s weather. Eight massive steel wings stretch out from the roof 50 meters high, adding a distinct sculptural element while reflecting direct sunlight, sheltering interior spaces from excessive heat. The slanted roof also works to harvest rainwater, taking advantage of the local climate and reducing the building’s impact on the environment.

Thousands of LED lights illuminate the aluminum wings; inside, the Main Auditorium is covered by over 15,000 bamboo blocks, capturing the local character while infusing a distinctly Finnish element in its forms and materials.


One year after its opening, the theater has seamlessly integrated its green terraces and lakeside landscape into the urban context and local culture...

I love the idea of Finnish architecture meeting in this locale to design this magnificent theater. Not only does the purpose of the architecture and the sustainability and environmental friendly aspects of this building speak for itself but the design of the life-like butterfly wings blends in gorgeously to it's surrounding landscape. The design and overall appearance can be appreciated at home and abroad and is a sight to behold, I'm sure. The inside is as equally as impressive as the outside- which has an interesting job of harvesting rainwater and regulating the amount of heat that may need to be reflected off of the building... which cuts down on energy usage.

Storm cottage retreat in the NZ wilderness

Storm cottage retreat in the NZ wilderness | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

Located on the east coast of Great Barrier Island in New Zealand is a house designed like "a black rough sawn timber box" facing north to the sea.

Created by Fearon Hay Architects, the dark exterior palette is enhanced with a layer of perforated metal screens, allowing the moderation of light and air as well as providing security. Internally walls and floors are clad with oiled oak boards that provide a warm contrast to the robust exterior. A pair of symmetrical bedrooms and ensuites are set around a central living space.


Care has been made to limit the scale of the building and the home is off the grid and powered by solar panels with independent systems for water collection and treatment.

This translucent cabin by architects Kengo Kuma and Associates is an experimental house in Hokkaidō, Japan, designed to test the limits of architecture in cold climates.


Inspiration came from the traditional architecture of the indigenous Ainu, whose "Chise" style buildings clad with sedge or bamboo grass hold in the warmth of a central fireplace that is never allowed to burn out.

"The fundamental idea of Chise, 'house of the earth,' is to keep warming up the ground this way and retrieve the radiation heat generated from it," say the architects. The Experimental House was constructed around a coated larch frame and it has a thick layer of polyester insulation sandwiched between the polycarbonate cladding of the exterior and the glass-fibre fabric of the interior. This insulation was made using recycled plastic bottles and it allows light to pass into the house through the walls.

As the first experimental house completed for the Meme Meadows research facility, the building will be used by the environmental technology institute to test how different factors affect the thermal qualities of its construction.

Located in the middle of the sea, opened to the impressive view of Ría de Ares, the first challenge that assumes the projected building is the landscape.


To respond to this challenge, a formal repertoire is used, based on pure volumes that are integrated in the geometry of the dock and representative of typical forms of naval architecture.

The location required a high standard in terms of structural strength due to the thrust produced by the wind. Similarly, the high salinity of the environment, led to a study in detail of all building systems to prevent premature degradation of materials..

There are no boundaries when it comes to developing extensive architectural projects that focus on alternative energy sources and environmentally friendly materials. Scotland’s climate had a lot to do with completing the project, named The Houl. The team of architects stated that their work is so impressive because it’s based on “an energy conscious design”.

The house was built by taking into account the benefits of Scotland’s windy weather. The roof is sloping at different angles and the main reason for choosing such an unusual shape for it, is the summer sun. The house makes use of natural materials, such as hardwood for the inside floors and bricks for the side façade. The Houl keeps a cozy appearance, the inside walls are painted in a luminous white, making the place more spacious and relaxing. With a stunning panoramic view, this house is simply delightful. Utterly immersed into an isolated spot, The Houl makes its inhabitants feel the sweet scent of freedom. A breezy, ventilated place for those who prefer the solitary landscapes...

Natural disasters around the world have further prompted proactive industry movements to make resilient architecture as much of a priority under a holistically sustainable model.

The Rabot Tourist Cabin is one of many DNT (Norwegian Trekking Association) lodging facilities throughout Norway. At 1200 meters above sea level, close to the glacier at Okstindan in northern Norway, the site is spectacular. The weather can be extremely harsh and the structure is constructed for heavy winds and storm.

A secondary rescue hut is placed 50 meters away from the main cabin as a safe shelter in case of destruction of the main cabin. The site inaccessible by road and is only reachable on foot or on skis. The cabin is named after the French glaciologist and geographer Charles Rabot who thoroughly explored the mountain areas in the province of Nordland. It is planned and built with local materials and with great local commitment...

How the Czech and Austrian teams designed their entries for the California climate.

The Solar Decathlon Europe is not until 2014, but two European teams are competing stateside this year representing the Czech Republic and Austria. 

Designed by students at the Czech Technical University, Air House targets a demographic familiar to the students, their parents—the 50+ empty nesters. The team cites data that states that senior housing represents 20% of Czech households and that number is growing. Conceptualized as weekend country house, it transitions to a permanent residence as the owners retire.

LISI from Team Austria surprisingly blurs the line between inside and outside. Large retractable sliding glass doors on the north and south sides disappear into the core areas leaving the living open to the elements, more like a covered courtyard than an interior. Lightweight curtains wrap the house for privacy and extra shade when low sun angles are at their most intense.

This countryside retreat by MDS features contemporary massing and beautiful wood interiors. Located in the foothills of the Yatsugatake mountains, in a relatively moderate climate, the residence reflects a lifestyle connected to nature and the surroundings. The project was developed using three adjacent volumes of different heights, with overhangs to control natural light and heat.


Wood is visible in the exposed beams, floors and window frames. Cross-ventilation is ensured through strategically placed windows. Two narrow terraces sheltered beneath the roof overhangs contribute to the building’s originality. “The fan-shaped design – opening to the south – means plenty of sun streams in during the cold winters: no matter the time of day there’s always a place to bask in the sun”, explained architects Kiyotoshi Mori and Natsuko Kawamura.

The Breezehouse, one of Michelle Kaufmann’s iconic designs, is the model for the first Blu Homes development in New York State, consisting of 12 home sites ranging from 6.8 to 24 acres overlooking the Hudson River Valley and the Catskills.


The local developer worked with conservancy groups to sustainably develop the project set amid woods, streams, ponds, and vistas. The three-bedroom, three-bath dwelling features a light-filled indoor environment that connects seamlessly with the natural landscape. Structural steel framing and advanced building science make it possible to withstand extreme weather, including high snow loads and wind gusts of up to 110 mph.


Blu Homes are LEED Silver certifiable upon leaving the factory and are solar-ready. Beyond the standard green features that Blu includes in every home, such as recycled steel framing, radiant heat flooring, high R-value walls and energy-efficient appliances, Blu Homes can achieve net zero energy status, Energy Star rating and higher LEED certifications with the inclusion of other available green elements.

The traditional fully-glazed façade so common in towers throughout the Middle East has been reinterpreted by students at the University of Nottingham who were tasked with designing a skyscraper for Abu Dhabi.


The proposal, by Alexandre Carrasco and Omelmominin Wadidy of the Masters in Sustainable Tall Buildings Course at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment instead combines a mixture of thin transparent and opaque elements aimed at emphasising the building’s elegance and vertical nature while improving environmental performance.



The overall design is inspired by sikkas, the narrow alleys between buildings in old Middle East cities. It aims to create comfortable spaces which are shaded from the harsh desert sun and wind while providing suitable areas for circulation, leisure, social and communal activities.

Rotterdam’s Floating Pavilion by Deltasync and PublicDomain Architects is the first pilot project for a sustainable floating district.


In an effort to address the challenges of climate change and sea level rise, the City of Rotterdam has started to build some intriguing floating structures. The first pilot project is a catalyst for climate change-proof architecture called the Floating Pavilion that consists of three connected hemispheres that look like bubbles anchored within the Dutch city’s old harbor.

An initiative of Rotterdam Climate Proof (part of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative), the mixed-use pavilion was designed by Deltasync and Public Domain Architects, and it sets an unprecedented example for innovative, sustainable and climate-proof architecture.

Upcoming weather for Abu Dhabi shows a week of temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit with 0% chance of rain. In such extreme conditions, architects practicing environmental design as their top priority are up against a tough battle. Never mind that the sand can compromise the structural integrity of the building, the intense heat and glare can render a comfortable indoor environment relatively impossible if not properly addressed.

 

For Abu Dhabi’s newest pair of towers, Aedas Architects designed a responsive facade which takes cultural cues from the “mashrabiya”, a traditional Islamic lattice shading device.

Completed in June 2012, the 145 meter towers’ Masharabiya shading system was developed by the computational design team at Aedas. Using a parametric description for the geometry of the actuated facade panels, the team was able to simulate their operation in response to sun exposure and changing incidence angles during the different days of the year.

The screen opperates as a curtain wall, sitting two meters outside the buildings’ exterior on an independent frame. Each triangle is coated with fiberglass and programmed to respond to the movement of the sun as a way to reduce solar gain and glare. In the evening, all the screens will close...

The corporate headquarters, designed by Annkit kummar of the Lucknow Industrial Development Authority (LIDA), uses the principles of integrating nature and architecture. The proposed Headquarters of LIDA assimilates greenery into the building by providing terrace gardens and recreational space to the employees.

The central courtyard together, with its vertical voids, aids in the wind flow throughout the building, keeping the entire mass cooler during the summer. The 2 voids on the façade and the central courtyard provide a prevalent cross breeze throughout the central atrium, keeping the temperature inside lower, compared to the heat outside. The wind flow through the front and side vertical voids creates a cross breeze and establishes the micro-climate at the interior.
The entire mass of the proposed headquarters is covered with horizontal louvers, as the prevalent heat conditions in Lucknow require intelligent façade features to keep the building cooler. The glazing used through-out the façade would be solar glass which would prevent heat from going in thereby keeping the balance of temperature...

Paul Butterworth Architect designed the homes in response to a brief requiring cost-effective, versatile design that was carefully tuned to the Stradbroke climate and lifestyle.

Designed to accommodate both large gatherings or an intimate couples retreat, central decks form the core of both dwellings, with the compact interiors opening up to and borrowing from the outdoor deck spaces. Designed for when climate change rears its ugly head and those lovely views of the Thames become threatening, the Amphibious House rises from its foundations and floats when overcome with floodwaters.

London-based Baca Architects — an architectural firm that’s worked on projects in two particularly flood-prone areas, The Netherlands and New Orleans — has received permission by the Environment Agency to construct the U.K’s very first amphibious home on a small island situated on the River Thames in historic Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

Designed to, as World Architecture News puts it, “respond to the uncertainties of future climate change,” the three-bedroom, timber-framed contemporary home measuring 2,400-square feet is an intriguing work of green home design — features include high levels of insulation and high-performance glazed windows — never mind the fact that when the Thames, located just 30-odd feet away, runneth over, the residence transforms into a free-floating pontoon, rising up to nine feet from its fixed foundations and floating atop the floodwaters...
