Flying Point Residence is a project envisioned and implemented by studio Stelle Architects. The two-story building is located in Southampton, New York, USA, and is a remodel of an old home the owner wished to recondition. Many materials found by the architects within the initial residence were recycled. Here is more from the official description. “House and garden design become a bridge between two different bodies of water: gentle Mecox Bay to the north and wild Atlantic Ocean to the south. An existing house was radically transformed as opposed to being demolished. Substantial effort was undertaken in order to reuse, rethink and modify existing conditions and materials. The plans were reworked to create smaller, staggered volumes, which are visually disconnected. Deep overhangs were added to strengthen the indoor/outdoor relationship and new bay to ocean views through the structure result in house as breezeway and bridge.”

Capturing the rural landscape of Wanaka Valley, the Hawkesbury Residence in Mt Barker, New Zealand, uses the landscape as an artistic, ever-changing art work as part of its architecture. Standing at the foot of the hill behind the property, the elongated shape of the residence allows all spaces to be flooded with the perfect amount of natural light. Los Angeles-based Marmol Radziner studio have completed this stunning 2,150 square foot residential project in 2011 and since then, the inhabitants have been enjoying the modern interiors and landscape beyond, framed by the roof line and cedar deck.

Passive House Retreat in Rhode Island

Recently I realized that we neglected to follow up on a Passive House project discussed in pre-construction way back in March 2010.

Located in Little Compton, the 1,200 square-foot retreat has three bedrooms, one of which is a kid’s loft, two bathrooms, a tub room, and an open kitchen, dining and living area.

The handsome, gable-roofed structure saves energy with the combination of super insulation (R40 walls, R40 slab, and R70 roof), air sealing, high-performance windows, passive solar heating, a heat recovery ventilator, and an energy monitoring system, according a profile by ZED.

Other than LEED and Energy Star certification, Passive House certification is in progress.

Little Compton was finished with a modern Poggenpohl kitchen, contemporary furniture from Addo Novo, no- and low-VOC materials, paints, and sealants, and a whole-house ventilation system.

This 3070 sq ft single family residence with detached garage is located on a 42 ft wide lot in Vancouver. The Dunbar Residence explores the potential for diversity of spatial experience in a home with a flexible plan that accommodates changes in everyday family life. In response to the owners‘ love of nature, interior-exterior relationships are established with outdoor patios and gardens at all levels. Spatially, light is used to define scale and intimacy within the home.

Designed and oriented for passive solar, the project also employs ultra high efficiency windows, solar hot water heating and a high performance heating / cooling system, including heat recovery that allow the home to operate with low energy consumption. The careful selection of appliances, plumbing fixtures, and lighting also reduce energy and water consumption. Interior elements, such as flooring and millwork, include recycled materials and low/no emission finishes. Planters on the roof reduce heat reflectance and rainwater runoff. Landscape design makes use of native, drought tolerant plant species and reclaimed stone.

The home was built by Natural Balance Home Builders Inc., a construction company that specializes in green building.

THE pilgrimage began with a black-and-white handbill on a campus bulletin board. At the top was a sketch of an ultramodern compound rising above a desert canyon: a city upon a hill.

Next came the manifesto. “If you are truly concerned about the problems of pollution, waste, energy depletion, land, water, air and biological conservation, poverty, segregation, intolerance, population containment, fear and disillusionment,” the poster began. Then, at the bottom, the remedy: “Join us.”

Occupying the middle of nowhere must have appealed to the students, architects and seekers of the 1970s who founded Arcosanti, an “urban laboratory” in the desert 70 miles north of Phoenix.

After following a washboard road to the desolate camp, they would find a kind of kibbutz. Here, in workshops, they might build a 30-foot-high concrete vault or plant olive trees or cast bells in silt to sell for construction money.
Above all, they were able to join an ongoing colloquy with the city’s visionary designer, Paolo Soleri. In a cosmic language of his own invention (filled with phrases like the “omega seed” and “miniaturization-complexity-duration”), Mr. Soleri proselytized for a carless society in harmony with the natural world. Over the course of 40 years, some 7,000 souls would come and go.

A new comfort station in the Riverside Park will be the first building in New York certified by the Living Building Challenge.

Frederick Law Olmstead designed New York's Riverside Park in 1875. The infamous Robert Moses ran a highway through it in 1935, but didn't kill it; "Today, the mature trees and sweeping lawns of the park tend to disguise the transport-oriented nature of the park’s construction." Occupying part of the park is the Riverside Tennis Club, which is in need of new washrooms to replace their current porta-potties. They hired Rick Cook of Cook + Fox to design them, and are building the bogs to the Living Building Challenge standard, perhaps the toughest green standard there is...

This picturesque beach cottage was designed by Roger Marvel Architects and is located in Amagansett, New York. Whaler’s Lane Residence is a project consisting of a renovation and expansion of an existing building overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The new additions include a swimming pool, jacuzzi, and trellis, kitchen, second floor bedroom, and terrace.

Here is a short description from the architects: “The original oceanfront beach cottage that occupied the site was reutilized conceptually for the project by maintaining similar materials and profiles to create a contextual residence.This property includes a large sand dune, that protects the project from strong winds, and public beach activity alike. The Landscaping has been accomplished with native materials and maintained with erosion control methods including Long wooden beach palates and boardwalks used to traverse the dune to the beach and guest house“.

3 Mews project in Dublin, Ireland by ODOS Architects is woven with natural daylighting and ventilation and features rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling.

Before these homes were built, the area located on an industrial laneway in Dublin 8 was not known for its residential buildings and was basically devoid of life. Rather than building a traditional residential structure, ODOS Architects opted to help ease the transition from an industrial aesthetic to a cozy place to call home. From the outside, the homes feature a cantilevered upper section built from powder coated metal industrial flooring planks arranged in a structural steel frame. The slatted exterior creates a sense of privacy without blocking views or light. Foliage and treetops are visible from the street and bring a piece of nature to the area.

Inside, the layout affords each space with easy access to the adjacent room as well as plentiful light and fresh air.

In addition to the use of air and light, the homes makes use of an air-to-water heat pump and a boiler for energy-efficient heating and cooling. Rainwater is collected from the courtyards and recycled into a grey water system that is used to irrigate all the courtyards and to supply water for the bathrooms and washing machines.

The ‘Glass House Mountain House’ in Maleny, celebrates its site, perched on the edge of the remnant rim of the Glass House range, as well as the essence of its place – ‘sky and mountains’. Translated into a place of ‘glass and stone’ inextricably connected to its landscape it has qualities of being anchored, robust and earthbound as well as being transparent, light and floating.

Memorable to the experience is the ‘sanctuary’ of the courtyard space, whose edges are defined by ambiguous indoor outdoor thresholds of the transparent internal spaces, sitting between the refuge of a monumental basalt ‘Garden Wall’ and the broader natural volcanic landscape. Engaging with existing topography, orientation, views and vegetation, the house balances economy and fine craft.

It celebrates economical finishes, directness, authenticity, natural, textured and unadorned surfaces which are embroidered with highly crafted timber elements and pieces. Designed for when climate change rears its ugly head and those lovely views of the Thames become threatening, the Amphibious House rises from its foundations and floats when overcome with floodwaters.

London-based Baca Architects — an architectural firm that’s worked on projects in two particularly flood-prone areas, The Netherlands and New Orleans — has received permission by the Environment Agency to construct the U.K’s very first amphibious home on a small island situated on the River Thames in historic Marlow, Buckinghamshire.

Designed to, as World Architecture News puts it, “respond to the uncertainties of future climate change,” the three-bedroom, timber-framed contemporary home measuring 2,400-square feet is an intriguing work of green home design — features include high levels of insulation and high-performance glazed windows — never mind the fact that when the Thames, located just 30-odd feet away, runneth over, the residence transforms into a free-floating pontoon, rising up to nine feet from its fixed foundations and floating atop the floodwaters...

The building is essentially a cover protecting the remains of a Roman assembly (thermal baths, forum and domus) in the archaeological site of Molinete Park in Cartagena, Spain.
This cover is certainly another piece in the urban area of Cartagena whose main architectural challenge is to reconcile very different architectures, from the roman times, passing through baroque to contemporary architectures, making them vibrate together in the neighborhood. It is a transition element, between very different city conditions, in size and structure, from the dense city centre to the slope park.
The primary goal of the project is to respect the existing remains, using a long-span structure, which requires the least amount of support for lifting the cover. The intervention unifies all the remains in a single space, allowing a continuous perception of the whole site. The cover also generates a new urban facade in the partition wall.
The project also pursues a sense of lightness and is conceived as an element that allows light. The inner layer is built with a modular system of corrugated multiwall translucent polycarbonate sheets. The outer layer, constructed with perforated steel plates, qualifies the incidence of light and gives a uniform exterior appearance.
Besides to the steel structure, the project proposes an elevated walkway parallel to the street. It is a very light structure hanging from the steel beams. Conceived as a glass box, with a faceted, partially visible geometry, it builds the street façade and allows a view of the ruins from three meters height. It is also accessible for disabled visitors. This high path permits an overall vision of the roman remains.

Swedish firm Plantagon has broken ground on a large urban greenhouse, its first major foray into vertical agriculture.

Plantagon, a Stockholm-based firm developing urban agriculture systems, broke ground earlier this month on a large urban greenhouse that is intended to produce TK much food for the city of Linköping, a city in south-central Sweden.

The building will take around a year and half to build; Platagon plans to use the structure to test vertical farming concepts and to sell fruits and vegetables directly to the people of Linköping, which is home it roughly 100,000 people.

Plantagon hopes the Linköping greenhouse will eventually serve as a showcase for urban agriculture, its calling card. Sweco says the structure will stand roughly 54 meters high.

Linköping’s mayor, Paul Lindvall, said that he’s proud his city has been chosen as the site for the greenhouse and as a testbed for urban agriculture solutions for other cities. Tekniska Verken plans to work closely with Plantagon and Sweco to develop efficient energy systems for the building, as well as ways to capture and process excess waste heat, CO2 and water.

The construction system of Casa Tierra was done with Pressed Earth Blocks (PEB) made from soil of the same lot. This system was selected because it is aesthetically pleasing as well as cost and energy efficient, fire and pest resistant, virtually soundproof, durable and structurally sound. PEB provides complete architectural freedom and is made from non-toxic readily available natural raw material. Compared to other systems, it is more flexible and does not affect the width of the walls. The soil was pressed with 3% of concrete and 7% of lime, being 90% of the material needed for the construction obtained directly from the lot...

The strength, durability and longevity stands in stark contrast to other building materials. A typical wood frame building has an average life span of 75 years while earthen structures will stand for centuries.

Located in Desert Hot Springs, California, the prototype prefab home is located on a five-acre site and oriented to best capture views of San Jacinto peak and the surrounding mountains. Doubling the 2000 square foot interior space, the home extends towards the landscape with covered outdoor living areas.

Sheltered living spaces blend the indoors with the outdoors, simultaneously extending and connecting the house to the north wing, comprised of a guest house and art studio. The “L” shaped plan layout defines a protected courtyard that includes a pool and fire pit.
