The Cairns Institute by Woods Bagot and RPA Architects | sustainable architecture |

As a repository of regional knowledge and research capacity, the The Cairns Institute is perfectly positioned to make a significant contribution to the development of a sustainable quality of life for tropical communities. The Woods Bagot design team, in collaboration with RPA Architects, designed a building that represents its place and its context in a new and exciting way.

Intrinsic to the design is a celebration of the rainforest setting and enrichment of the place experience. An evolving landscape skin, a ‘trellis’, defines the building, offering aesthetics and sun control, while a variety of micro climate ecologies around the building have been created.

The design assists in minimising running costs for the university whilst contributing to the quality of the environment, in line with the university’s aspirations to achieve a sustainable outcome for the building.

This design responds to the waste of space in today´s interiors and exteriors, the lack of respect for the natural landscape, the global use of non-renewable materials, and how all of this in various ways is linked to our digital tools.

The house is built by a local contractor and a local carpentry shop has milled all the building parts. Every part of the building was designed specifically for this project to awoid waste material, using different kinds of wood from sustainably forested woodland...

building things from renewable materials, in my opinion is a great idea. Not only will buildings and houses be constructed, but less wood will be needed to be cut down and i think that would not just help the planet and all of us on it.

The prototypes designed for DST Company for the CONCRETA 2003 Exhibition, intend to provide a multiplicity of solutions regarding its purpose. The development of a modular typology that could respond to specific ends such as of temporary housing, environmental observatory, fire outpost, bar, Kiosk, “virtual square” or to a minimum element that could gather the necessary conditions to communicate through IT systems was a priority.

The plan was to produce a module that could be repeated and associated almost endlessly, being at the same time functionally mutable and capable of providing urban conditions through associative forms of its base element.

The concept of Prefabs is no new idea, however these modern prototypes change the way one looks at prefabs. Prefabs are generally associated with being made out of some sort of iron material and are built for practicality rather than comfort. These prototypes are designed to manage energy and to work in favour of the land. Not only are they nice looking but they are also complimentary to the land.

A concert hall carves its own niche in the Austrian Alps while bowing to the neighboring midcentury playhouse and the breathtaking landscape.

In the picturesque Austrian village of Erl, where the rugged Alps descend to meet the undulating valley below, a striking, angular structure, the Tyrolean Festspielhaus, or Festival Hall, pierces the landscape that inspired it. “We conceived of the building as tectonic plates shifting over one another,” says Sebastian Brunke, a project architect from the Viennese firm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects. “The opening between the two plates forms the foyer, which glows at night and through which the Alpine landscape flows like a carpet.” Reflecting the mountains above, the upper volume's sharply pointed cantilever juts out almost 100 feet.

Beach Walk House, Fire Island

This Fire Island house is located directly behind beach-front dunes. The strict requirements of both FEMA and local codes regarding height, lot line, setbacks, and site coverage; the proximity of neighbors; and very specific view corridors all presented a host of challenges. 

The response was to create a dynamic composition of three intersecting rectilinear forms to maximize both views and privacy. The volume at grade is delineated by dark, vertically slatted, wood breakaway walls. The center volume, clad in horizontal wood siding, houses bedrooms & baths and provides roof decks for the living level. The metallic clad upper volume contains a large, open-plan living space with spectacular water views.

Designed by Suters Architects, the sustainable Meditation and Indigenous Cultural Centre at Bentleigh Secondary College has opened its doors to students and teachers.

Set in the schools Moorooboon wetland, the building acts as a piece of furniture – something to be sat in, on and around – whist students engage with the surroundings and a curriculum focused the environment, culture and mindfulness.

The project educates students about the importance of sustainable design. Constructed entirely of timber the centre incorporates passive heating and cooling design, carbon sequestration design, a wind turbine to provide power and a future geothermal exchange unit for heating and cooling.

This series will enter into fierce and competitive prefab market. It is designed to fulfill the energy consuption requirements in nordic countries, even snow load requirements up to 3 kN. Houses are equipped with high standard ventilation systems, full automation and management systems, they are designed to utilize a solar heating during spring and autumn, have shelter from sun during summer months, thus not requiring a cooling system. Used building materials are in most parts wood, walls are vapour permeable and facades are ventilated. Structural frame is made of glulam, walls have rockwool insulation, internal walls are made of cross-laminated-timber panels, windows are wood-aluminium and furniture is either painted or laminated MDF boards.

No Rules Just Architecture has created DOM(E), an prefabricated off-grid home that is an eco-friendly and portable shelter. DOM(E) provides optimal living conditions no matter where it is located and is less expensive than traditional construction, while making the best use of natural energy resources.

DOM(E) can be folded for transport and assembled on-site. Its shape provides for natural ventilation while utilizing an underground duct system for heating and cooling. Solar panels connect to a hot water tank and rainwater collection systems can be made part of the drainage system that surrounds the enclosure.

The house’s exterior is all covered in timber cladding. Located in a tranquil and quiet site and surrounded by a beautiful green scenery, the picturesque home was designed by Rossetti + Wyss Architekten. The simple, angular dream-like house integrates perfectly into the landscape, unveiling a breezy and uncluttered interior.

The L-shaped floor plan boasts oak plank ceilings and flush-mounted windows that offer framed views of the surroundings. Wood is the main material used to define the interior, which is well-ventilated and flooded with light.

The Start.Home is the Stanford University entry in the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon.

Integrating technology into a home that can grow as needs change, the Start.Home design allows for customization and additions that are based on a pre-engineered, pre-fabricated start.core that can meet net-zero energy efficiency standards.

The Stanford design team aims to provide “efficiency without sacrificing creativity” such that each house can be an expression of its owner. The 12’x15’x10’ start.core features natural lighting, open spaces, a high roof that permits passive ventilation, and an emphasis on connecting the interior to the outdoors. The basic unit provides for a bathroom, kitchen, mechanical component access, and living areas. The start.core can be shipped on a standard truck trailer and installed on a lot for construction and customization.

Like its surrounding SoMa (South of Market) neighborhood in San Francisco, 355 11th Street is an eye-catching hybrid of old and new. And in the three years since this formerly derelict but National Register–listed plumbing warehouse was renovated into a LEED-NC Gold–certified mixed-use office building and LEED-CI Platinum–certified restaurant, it has become a community magnet.

These attributes, among many others, garnered the project an AIA COTE Top Ten Green Project designation in 2010 and, this year, the inaugural 2013 AIA COTE Plus award.

House L, located in Oosterhout, The Netherlands, is a spacious home with a design that takes the landscape into consideration and creates a strong connection to the environment.

From Grosfeld van der Velde Architecten:

“The existing landscape, the orientation to the rural surroundings and the planning conditions were the deciding factors in the siting of the dwelling at the rear of the plot. The ground floor was raised with respect to the current ground level, with large glass surfaces positioned to look out over the rural landscape and terraces running the length of the building with an unbroken roof surface on corbelling, all of which allow the outer space to be experienced to the full. At the same time, the large roof projections are designed to prevent too much light entering.

Vertical Western Red Cedar boarding was chosen for the façade cladding, and the roof has a moss-sedum roof covering. The restrained detailing combined with the shape and the materials chosen give House L an ultra-modern appearance, but one that is entirely at home in its rural surroundings.”

How the Czech and Austrian teams designed their entries for the California climate.

The Solar Decathlon Europe is not until 2014, but two European teams are competing stateside this year representing the Czech Republic and Austria. 

Designed by students at the Czech Technical University, Air House targets a demographic familiar to the students, their parents—the 50+ empty nesters. The team cites data that states that senior housing represents 20% of Czech households and that number is growing. Conceptualized as weekend country house, it transitions to a permanent residence as the owners retire.

LISI from Team Austria surprisingly blurs the line between inside and outside. Large retractable sliding glass doors on the north and south sides disappear into the core areas leaving the living open to the elements, more like a covered courtyard than an interior. Lightweight curtains wrap the house for privacy and extra shade when low sun angles are at their most intense.

Portuguese architects Luís Rebelo de Andrade and Tiago Rebelo de Andrade have realized a modular tree house for the Pedras Salgadas Park.

The innovative project challenges pre-established concepts associated with modular construction, making use of new technology and lightweight, flexible construction.

The materials gives a sense of connection with nature and establishes the symbiosis between house and Park. Native slate and wood promote integration within the site, as sustainability and ecology were significant concerns during the project development. Reinforced insulation, heating systems, water reuse, water solar panels, low consumption lighting (using LED technology) were among the strategies used...

Its all about going green these days and more and more archeatects are finding inovative ways of designing houses that use natural energy and resourses instead of wasting the earths materials. this project in particular makes use of solar pannels to regulate all power in the house. If only all houses could be built this way.

Casa Transportable house ÁPH80 by Ábaton that fits on the back of a lorry and moved by road, with cement board walls and hinged panels.

Ábaton chose dimensions of nine by three metres to provide just enough space for two people and also allow the transportable house to be hoisted onto the back of a truck.

Externally the home is clad entirely in grey cement-board panels that hinge open to reveal sliding glass doors in the front and windows to the sides.

Design Details: Building By Day, Canvas For Light And Shadow By Night | sustainable architecture |

How do you design a building to stand out? Easy: make it sculptural and subtly shaded by day and an exuberant show of light and shadow by night.

That's what Piuarch did with the Bentini Headquarters in Faenza RA, Italy. By setting windows in deep angled depressions the architects created a playground for darkness and illumination. At night the interior lighting bursts onto the building's varied surfaces to stunning effect. Elsewhere, lighting transmits through the fully glazed exterior to showcase its full energy. Lastly, the building's hallways and rooms are surfaced in pure white to echo the play of shadows outside.

Robson Rak Architects have designed a house on a 10-acre farm located in Merricks North near Melbourne, Australia. The property was bought as a weekender with the intention of building a new house with enough room for their family to grow and enjoy through the generations.

From the architects: 

In accordance to the client’s desire for simplicity and material honesty, the house has been reduced to a modest palette of earth, glass and timber. The majority of the internal walls are rammed earth, creating a beautiful, warm, textural look and feel.

The walls are 400mm thick with an internal strip of 100mm thick foam insulation, assisting the natural qualities of the rammed earth in maintaining a consistent internal temperature. The R-value of the walls up to a very high level, and the double-glazing of all windows and doors assists the building in being extremely environmentally efficient as attested by our clients. The high thermal mass of these walls has made the house thermally efficient. Openable windows on the east, west, north and south allows cross ventilation.

Bioclimatic Design: ARPT Headquarters by Mario Cucinella Architects | sustainable architecture |

Mario Cucinella Architects have designed the ARPT headquarters in Algeria with a fin-like form referencing sand dunes and Mediterranean architecture.

The project is inspired by the Algerian desert landscape, where the dunes are manufactured by wind and sand. An institutional building as the new ARPT headquarters serves as the reference point within a neighborhood and a city where tradition and modernity merge each other to create new symbolic and cultural scenarios.

The desire to create a building that would work according to the principles of bioclimatic architecture and, in particular, by the natural cooling techniques of the past, suggested an aerodynamic shape, convex on the North side to divert the hot winds, and concave on the South side to capture the cool breezes during the night, and thus to promote the natural ventilation of the building.

Form, energy and tradition are transformed then into a new building that will become a symbol of the development of Algeria.

Geometric Inspiration + Green Building: Taiwan's Zero-Carbon Swallows Nest | sustainable architecture |

Taking inspiration from a geometric möbius strip, architect Vincent Callebaut has designed an impressive new building for Taiwan's Taichung gateway park.

The Swallows Nest's form starts out with a triangle that is then rotated around an elipse. Reaching a height of eight-stories, the building will house shops, cafes, and an "endless patio" which opens up into the park and is found in the center of the structure. It will host a variety of art within the many interior galleries.

The Swallows Nest also features various eco-friendly features. The undulating roof will have a number of solar panels attached to it, while the building's glass construction allows for natural light to enter. Three vertical gardens are found in the park's center, with one at each arched entrance. Most impressively, there will be continued efforts to make the Swallows Nest a zero carbon emissions structure.

A Sustainable Civic Center and City Hall for Newport Beach, California | sustainable architecture |

At a construction cost of $130 million, Newport Beach City Hall and Civic Center is a significant project for Orange County, not only in terms of size and scope, but also with regard to aesthetics and sustainability.

The contemporary steel and glass design has a very distinct appearance, reflecting a sense of movement through the repeated use of curved structural members that create rhythm and add scale.

Louvers at the ceiling and wall planes reguate daylight and add visual continuity throughout the entire project, linking the new city hall to the renovated library and creating a public gathering area for the community.

Set to achieve LEED gold certification, the design features clerestory windows that maximize daylighting while deep overhangs allow for passive cooling. Operable windows allow occupants to take advantage of the mild coastal climate while enjoying views to the park outside, which adds 12 acres of trails, wetlands and recreation space to the city's parklands.

From the very start it was clear that the landscape around the villa should be preserved as much as possible. Semi-positioned in the slope of the hill, the first floor towers above the partially glazed ground floor and the undulating dune landscape. The large glass facades ensure a connection between outdoors and indoors; contact with nature is tangible throughout the house. At the same time, the patio in the heart of the villa provides maximum daylight in all the rooms.

Special attention is devoted to energy in Villa V, with geothermal energy storage, a heat pump and solar collectors on the green roof and only natural materials have been used in the building construction processes...
