Part office, part exhibition space, a new London landmark aims to challenge our assumptions about green design.


A new building in east London’s Royal Victoria Docks aims to change public perceptions of green architecture – while trialling some new sustainable technologies and approaches at scale. There’s not a green roof or thick insulated wall in sight. In fact, the structure, which is called the Crystal, is everything we’ve come to believe a sustainable building shouldn’t be: lightweight, angular, glazed from top to bottom and with a roof made out of steel.

Part office space, part interactive exhibition about the future of cities, the building is intended as a living experiment in sustainability that business leaders, politicians and the general public alike can learn from. “The building is a great demonstration of the ‘art of the possible’”, says Martin Hunt, Head of Networks and Partnerships at Forum for the Future. “It’s refreshing to see an interactive exhibition that visualises what our cities could be like – based on high quality research and thoughtful benchmarking. It brings the big issues of urban living – such as water and energy consumption, public health and safety – to life in a way that engages people and inspires them.”

It's quite enlightening, as pointed out here, that a lot of glass used correctly can actually yield a zero energy building. But I agree that assessing the true sustainability of the building would have to factor in all the embodied fossil fuel and other energy used to make its components. And when you're talking about glass, that could be huge.

This building challenges the preconception of an exclusively formal climate for institutions of higher learning. Designed by BDG Architecten, the CAH University of Applied Sciences in Dronten (a school for agricultural studies) symbolizes a new educational vernacular.

In line with BDG’s programmatic doctrine, the overall design of the building is driven by a strong sustainable concept with the efficient use of sunlight, rainwater and clean air flow.
The solution was a 16-m-high greenhouse, inside which two buildings provide space for both people and plants. The greenhouse functions as a huge air duct, regulating ventilation through an integrated smart climate system. Passive cooling in the form of solar blinds and etched-glass panels prevents overheating in the summer. Rainwater is collected and reused to flush toilets and to clean the building.

The architects’ inside-outside juxtaposition of volumes. Composed of a skeleton of white steel trusses and modular glass panels, the outermost structure encompasses a pair of timber-clad buildings whose solidity cuts through the otherwise light-filled structure. The incorporation of vegetation at various places increases the flow of fresh air and further diminishes the sense of enclosure...

With new curricula that would support its transition from an associate to a baccalaureate degree-granting institution, Morrisville State College asked Perkins Eastman to transform a former agricultural building into a modern light-filled space for new programs in architecture and technology—the Center for Design and Technology.

 

Forming a dynamic new entrance to the Morrisville campus, the character of the former dairy barn, an important campus structure, was preserved—reflecting the College’s longstanding commitment to sustainability—while the design is decidedly 21st-century.

Indeed, the 23,000 sf LEED Silver building has itself become a teaching tool for the College’s new courses in sustainable architecture and interior design, enhancing the creative environment for both students and faculty. With the silhouette of the former barn now clad in energy-efficient glass—letting in ideal northern light to flood the interior spaces during the day—the building serves as a sculptural object by night, transmitting a warm glow from the reclaimed barn siding used throughout the interior...

Bustler: Goettsch Partners’ New Music Building for Northwestern University | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

Chicago architecture firm Goettsch Partners has designed the signature building that will be the new home of Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music and provide additional space for the School of Communication on Northwestern’s Evanston campus. The university is planning to break ground and begin construction in May of this year. The project is slated to be completed and ready for move-in in fall 2015.

The new 152,000-square-foot building features a recital hall, an opera rehearsal room/black box theater, and a choral rehearsal room and library. The project also includes classrooms, teaching labs, academic faculty offices, teaching studios for choral, opera, piano and voice faculty, practice rooms, student lounges, and administrative offices. The building design emphasizes a sustainable approach throughout, with a minimum of achieving LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council...

Students build a modest home for a Navajo family in the Utah desert.

A “windcatcher” is a centuries-old Persian technology featuring a tower that takes advantage of natural ventilation by capturing and cooling air. Hank Louis, of DesignBuildBLUFF, the University of Utah/University of Colorado, Denver design-build studio, recognized the merits of this simple solution for a recently completed Navajo family home. The house features a tower made of compressed earth bricks with four openings around the top. THE pilgrimage began with a black-and-white handbill on a campus bulletin board. At the top was a sketch of an ultramodern compound rising above a desert canyon: a city upon a hill.

Next came the manifesto. “If you are truly concerned about the problems of pollution, waste, energy depletion, land, water, air and biological conservation, poverty, segregation, intolerance, population containment, fear and disillusionment,” the poster began. Then, at the bottom, the remedy: “Join us.”

Occupying the middle of nowhere must have appealed to the students, architects and seekers of the 1970s who founded Arcosanti, an “urban laboratory” in the desert 70 miles north of Phoenix.

After following a washboard road to the desolate camp, they would find a kind of kibbutz. Here, in workshops, they might build a 30-foot-high concrete vault or plant olive trees or cast bells in silt to sell for construction money.
Above all, they were able to join an ongoing colloquy with the city’s visionary designer, Paolo Soleri. In a cosmic language of his own invention (filled with phrases like the “omega seed” and “miniaturization-complexity-duration”), Mr. Soleri proselytized for a carless society in harmony with the natural world. Over the course of 40 years, some 7,000 souls would come and go.

Sustainable architecture and classrooms of the future have finally come together in an Australian green building concept that is out of this world. The latest renderings of what is arguably one of world’s most impressive sustainable educational facilities have been released and already they are causing a stir in both architectural and green building fields.
Created by architectural firm LAVA, the aptly named ‘classroom of the future’ is a design concept that sees the creation of a prefabricated, relocatable learning environment, which incorporates innovative and clever design features.

The key point of uniqueness that this design concept holds is that it is versatile. The layout of the proposed building includes a prefabricated timber roof, three timber service modules, smart panels that act as operable windows and include ‘smart’ infill panels and a ground level plinth with underground rain water collection tanks, all of which will be insulated according to the clime of the building’s location.
Customisation of the design is maximised by the three modules’ ability to interconnect in several variations, allowing the rooms to be shaped around changing class sizes.
Exterior landscape environment will also act as a makeshift outdoor class area and become a part of scholastic activities...

This creative concept called “Istanbul Disaster Prevention and Education Centre” was created by Portuguese firm OODA. The aim was to establish a proposal for a centre fully equipped with adequate technology and facilities to be prepared against a disaster and to develop public consciousness about disasters in general as well as earthquakes.

"For this unique equipment, our proposal approach tries to merge the most efficient program articulation with a strong concept which intends to suggest the overall theme integrated with Istanbul’s context. On the interior we created a multi-level space experience having the entire required program connected through a central point that simultaneously receives and guides the public to interact with the building. We also created a progressive cladding concept to the facade that introduces and enhances the Arabic atmosphere while it’s reacting – through density combination and geometrical driven development- to the local environment."

Holcim Awards Silver 2011 North America: The public school project is designed as a prototype to be built on multiple campuses throughout Los Angeles. Its aim is an economical, flexible and yet, in its spatial concept, ambitious design that can be adjusted to different pedagogical models and learning styles. The two-level building can accommodate up to 500 students and may also be reconfigured for other communal functions. The sustainability concept intends to reach a net zero energy building standard and achieve LEED Platinum rating.

Using local materials, this impressive bamboo structure features a microcosm of imaginative spaces designed for a range of playful activities.


This incredible bamboo structure, by Dutch firm 24H-architecture, is part of the Soneva Kiri eco-resort on the island of Koh Kood, Thailand. Designed as a children's activity and learning center, the fantastic interiors are bound to impress even the most stoic grown-up.

Evoking the fluid shape of a manta ray, the center is located on a rocky slope overlooking the bay, with a large canopy of bamboo shingles sheltering the open interior of "mini-structures". The structure uses locally-sourced bamboo stalks of all sizes, ranging from the large main columns that are anchored into concrete footings to the other structural members that are grouped together using nuts and bolts and natural fiber lashings.


From the architects:

The design adopts all bioclimatic aspects to suits its humid tropical environment. The roof cantilevers up to 8 metres, acting like a big umbrella providing shade and protection from the heavy rains. The open design with the translucent elevated rooftop and setback floors allow a natural airflow inside and the use of natural daylight, limiting the building’s energy consumption.

Tony’s Farm is the biggest organic food farm in Shanghai, which produces certified vegetables and fruits. But it's more than just a place for vegetable production. The vision is to integrate the consumer and therefore promote a natural lifestyle.


To link the activities of the working people with the visitors of the farm, playze developed a building complex, which combines the main reception, a lobby, (working also for the future hotel rooms) and a vip area, with the new offices and an existing warehouse, where the fruits and vegetables are being packed. The building provides transparency within the manufacturing process. Thus it supports the vision of integrating the visitor and helps to reinforce the consumer confidence in the products of the farm. At the same time the building design is driven by the concept of sustainability, combined with it's iconic qualities, it communicates and promotes the core concept of the Farm...

Bentleigh Secondary School in Melbourne's east has been named the most sustainable educational institution according to the International Green Awards which were held in London this month.
Suters Architects have been involved with the school over many years in the redevelopment of the entire campus and worked in partnership with the college to design stages 1 and 2. Project Leader, John Schout said that the campus has a positive effect on the environment as well as changing the behaviour of staff and students to best practice environmental management:
"A new building, a Meditation and Indigenous Cultural Centre, designed entirely of timber is an example of sustainable carbon capture principles and will be completed in 2013. Key ESD initiatives include shading and natural light, solar panels, water treatment and wetlands and a planned thermal heating and cooling system."

Part of an ambitious urban regeneration project on land that used to be defined by hydroelectric-powered textile industries, the new Oloron Saint Marie Multimedia Center displays its bold architecture in the town of Oloron-Sainte-Marie, France.

French architectural firm Pascale Guédot, in collaboration with Michel Corajoud, took this first step in re-imagining this abandoned beret factory into a wonderful media center built on the existing stone foundation.

The design had to capture the natural beauty in the architecture, so the architects designed the 2,700 square meter building as a main wood latticed volume floating on top of a glass level below. This beautifully modern multimedia center was linked to the opposite banks via two walkways uniting in a 1,255 square meter public concourse and creating a necessary connection between river banks. A 44 car parking space ensures visitors are carefree when walking through the Oloron Saint Marie Multimedia Center’s glass entrance...

Eva Samuel Architects and Associates designed this school in Paris, France.

The building’s envelope is a response to several environmental aims: visual protection, increased natural light to counteract the surrounding solar screens, no thermal bridges, natural ventilation and double flux in winter. This school is the first to comply with the City of Paris’s climate plan. The result is a thick façade with varied reliefs – bay, alcove, and concave windows – used horizontally on the roof as skylights and to house air treatment machinery and ventilation chimneys. These multi-form elements enliven and dematerialise the façades.

The atmosphere inside the school is gentle and serene. The only colours are those of the materials themselves, such as the wood of the false ceilings and the bay windows. The façade’s thickness creates a strong sense of protection and minimises outlook from neighbouring towers. The children enjoy taking over the micro-spaces generated by the façade’s thickness, using them as mini-living rooms, for reading, tea parties, hiding, etc...

CTEC’s 4,000-square-foot barnlike structure includes a 1,000-square-foot mezzanine. 

Sawtooth skylights flood the rectangular interior with natural light and give the building a jagged profile; a cantilevering balcony juts out toward the stream. A metal stud frame allows for a modular system of reclaimed wood panels, measuring approximately a classic 4 feet by 4 feet. The wood—donated from a range of outside jobs—creates a variety of textures and color. The process of preparing the panels was like an old-school handwriting exercise, in that repetition gave way to interpretation, with the students’ handiwork giving the project an unexpected quilt-like quality. Back inside, deconstructed redwood pickle barrels serve as tables and sit atop block endgrain flooring that the students made of fir.

Linnaeusborg at the University of Groningen is a green building - literally. Not only is it colored green, but it has a green roof and features energy-efficient, smart, future-proof design. This zig-zagging horizontal tower is the new building for the Centre for Life Sciences of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University, which is located in the northern Netherlands.

Designed by Rudy Uytenhaak Architectenbureau, the life sciences building holds space for laboratories, greenhouses, animal housing, offices, and classrooms all dedicated to biology, zoology, botany, microbiology, and biotechnology. Built around the principles of interaction, dynamism, and flexibility, Linnaeusborg is a high-tech facility with a decidedly green twist.

Looking like Epcot Center in Disney World, Montreal’s Biosphere is a museum dedicated to the environment. Originally built as the United States pavilion for the 1967 World Fair Expo, the dome was repurposed into the museum in 1990.

The interactive museum initially showcased the water ecosystem of the Great Lakes region, but has since expanded to encompasses environmental issues such as climate change, air, eco-technologies and sustainable development.

Carnegie Mellon University has added two more LEED Gold buildings – the Gate Center for Computer Science and Hillman Center for Future-Generation Technologies.

The designations bring the campus’s total of LEED certified buildings to 12. The latest LEED buildings were both designed by Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects from Atlanta and include a mix of classrooms, offices and laboratories. They replace a 150-space underground garage and more than double the outdoor space with five green roofs and a winter garden.

A Pittsburgh plant conservatory aims to be a pioneer in green building -- both inside and out.

The conservatory built a LEED silver-certified visitors center and a new tropical forest conservatory tricked out with "earth tubes" and "energy blankets" that help maintain equatorial temperatures through the depths of Steel City winters. Phipps, remembered fondly for its jungle-like interior by generations of school kids, also hosts all manner of conservation-oriented classes and conferences.

Phipps' latest project - the Center for Sustainable Landscapes, an educational center that should be finished in spring of 2012 - goes even further...
