Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM) has revealed designs for a 530-metre skyscraper in Jakarta that will harvest wind energy through an opening at its peak.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has revealed designs for a skyscraper in Jakarta that will be over 500 metres high and will harvest wind energy through an opening at its peak. With a proposed height of approximately 530 metres, the Pertamina Energy Tower will be twice as high as Wisma 46, currently the tallest building in Indonesia, and will feature an integrated "wind funnel" that generates energy from prevailing air currents.

The new design for a telecommunication tower in Istanbul by RTA office is conceptually based on the way the designers understand the site and geography. Therefore their proposal comes as a response to this very specific and strategically important point which bridges the gap between Europe and Asia, merging cultures and continents.


The shape to the tower is given by the sum of flexible threads that adapt to the body. As the shape varies so does the floor plan which allows different functions.  Regarding the energy sources, the tower uses wind power, while it also resembles an element that had been shaped by the wind. The texture of the tower changes in perception as the visitor is approaching the object –from solid it transforms into a mesh.

La nueva torre de comunicaciones de Estambul. De nuevo puente entre oriente y occidente. Una serie de hilos que se daptan al cuerpo principal de la torre y que hacen que la torre se convierta en una malla según te acercas. Poca resistencia al viento y referencia a las cúpulas-bulbo de toda la iconografía oriental.

This unique contemporary house by Wallflower Architecture + Design takes the form of a raised reinforced concrete tube whose open ends are oriented in a north-south direction, with the prevailing breezes.


All rooms have walls that side either east or west, and front north and south. The tubular structure resists east west heat gain thanks to the the reinforced concrete, but encourages passive cooling through the open north south axis, whose facades are treated with timber screens that act as privacy filters for the bedrooms and the first layer of solar heat reduction. The timber fins can also be angled to catch a breeze or increase privacy when needed. Other design considerations included the context and proximity of neighboring homes, the daily sun path and the prevailing winds.

Renewable energy reigns at House of Vestas, a new LEED Platinum office building for a global wind-turbine manufacturer in Aarhus, Denmark.

It seems appropriate that renewable energy abounds at the House of Vestas, a 30,500-square-meter office building that is the anchor of the wind-turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind System’s campus in Aarhus, Denmark. A geothermal system snakes a total of 36 kilometers under a 10,000-square-meter triangular park—which links the new building to an existing building next door. The system is producing nearly 1,000 megawatts of power annually. A total of 850 square meters of photovoltaics is spread out between 350 square meters of solar hot-water heaters on the ground level, a separate installation on the roof of a southern office wing, and thin-film PVs in the skylight glass that tops the building’s central atrium. Taiwan Skyscraper's Facade Covered in Thousands of Wind Turbines | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

Beijing-based Decode Urbanism Office has designed a 1,150 foot (350m) skyscraper located in Taichung City, Taiwan, to house the city’s Department of Urban Development, commercial concerns, museums, retail areas and exhibitions spaces. 


The building’s design was inspired by the plum blossom, the national flower of China and Taiwan. The building’s twisting and turning structure is intended to evoke the experience of plum blossoms bursting into bloom.

To do so, the facade has thousands of small diamond shaped wind turbines, which produce enough energy to power the building. These wind generators are set into the facade grid, oscillating as wind skirts the building.

Yet again another environmentally friendly design. This building has been designed to generate its own energy and power LED lighting throughout the building. This is done through the power of wind turbines which the building is completely surrounded by. It is becoming the newest trend in design to create buildings and structures that are helpful to the environment.

Gensler announced that the world’s second tallest skyscraper has been topped out in Shanghai. The twisting, mixed-use Shanghai Tower soars up to 632 meters – a height only eclipsed by the the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The tower’s cleverly designed facade reduces wind load by 24 percent during typhoons, and sky gardens at the apex mimic traditional open courtyards.

The twisting form reduces the load by 24% during typhoons and also slashed construction costs by a whopping $58 million. The building is organized in nine vertical zones that distribute heating, cooling and water more efficiently, reducing these loads, as well as the costs of maintaining interior comfort. Sky gardens crown the mammoth building alongside observation decks and cultural facilities, while retail facilities are located at the base, with offices spread out between. The tower will open in 2014.

My friend, Jim Young, recently returned from a personal visit to the top of this enormous building. The view was astounding.  Certainly anything this tall is very much an ego driven edifice.  Still there are lessons to be learned like how to better reduce sway and deal with wind or capture wind energy or capture elevator energy and so forth.  Tall buildings will need to be made more efficient in the future as we densify our world.

The proposed 116-story Imperial Tower will offer a slew of sustainable options.

Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture‘s latest proposal for Mumbai’s tallest building—the slender 116-story, 400-meter residential Imperial Tower is designed to "confuse the wind."

This simply means that the extremely tall and thin tower will stand up to the forces of wind. Enhanced by sky gardens, designed to dampen wind eddying about the tower, the futuristic pencil-like structure will stand strong against a sudden gale.


AS+GG also designed the skyscraper to minimize its effects on climate change. Environmentally friendly features include rainwater harvesting, gray water recycling, and exterior cladding to limit solar heat gain...

Apogee Stadium at the University of North Texas is not only LEED Platinum certified, but it also boasts 3 wind turbines to generate 1/3 of its electricity.

The recently completed Apogee Stadium at the University of North Texas is one of the first collegiate venues to generate on-site renewable energy with a set of wind turbines. Three utility-scale wind turbines provide 1/3 of the stadium's annual energy consumption, which coupled with the stadium's energy-efficient design equates to a huge win for the university. Designed by HKS Inc, the 31,000 seat Apogee Stadium takes inspiration from the school's mascot - the eagle, and includes a winged exposed steel structure along with plenty of carbon reducing strategies...
