It may look unassuming, but this sleek black box is the culmination of a two-year long collaboration of more than 50 students from 7 different faculties of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.


Initially envisioned by two architecture students and built for the European Solar Decathlon 2012 in Madrid, the goal of Odooproject was to encourage a new sustainable life by designing a house where as much time as possible can be spent outdoors.

Odoo’s square plan has two primary elements: the north half enclosure and the south half outdoor terrace, bordered by the ‘summer wall’ to the south. The design allows comfortable living inside or outside throughout the year as the seasons allow.

To provide a comfortable environment, as efficiently as possible, the house uses both active and passive systems. The compact form of Odoo reduces heat loss, while its organization means it has two south-facing facades. The glass façade exploits solar gain, to heat the interior during the winter, and the solar panels on the ‘summer wall’ generate power from the summer sun...

CTEC’s 4,000-square-foot barnlike structure includes a 1,000-square-foot mezzanine. 

Sawtooth skylights flood the rectangular interior with natural light and give the building a jagged profile; a cantilevering balcony juts out toward the stream. A metal stud frame allows for a modular system of reclaimed wood panels, measuring approximately a classic 4 feet by 4 feet. The wood—donated from a range of outside jobs—creates a variety of textures and color. The process of preparing the panels was like an old-school handwriting exercise, in that repetition gave way to interpretation, with the students’ handiwork giving the project an unexpected quilt-like quality. Back inside, deconstructed redwood pickle barrels serve as tables and sit atop block endgrain flooring that the students made of fir.

Students build a modest home for a Navajo family in the Utah desert.

A “windcatcher” is a centuries-old Persian technology featuring a tower that takes advantage of natural ventilation by capturing and cooling air. Hank Louis, of DesignBuildBLUFF, the University of Utah/University of Colorado, Denver design-build studio, recognized the merits of this simple solution for a recently completed Navajo family home. The house features a tower made of compressed earth bricks with four openings around the top. As the wind blows through the slits, wet blankets (moistened by a drip line) chill the air that then circulates around the home...

The G3Box on ASU's campus is a nice riser for Palermo and Young. The next ones will be shelters for relief workers and facilities for doctors.

Two years ago, ASU engineering students Gabrielle Palermo & Susanna Young discovered they were each working on projects to turn shipping containers into clinics for developing countries. More than 2.4 million Native Americans live on or close to tribal reservations, and over forty percent live in dilapidated or overcrowded housing where basic conveniences like water, power and plumbing are often severely insufficient.

A educational nonprofit based in Utah is taking the principles of design-build, where designers are involved in construction, to address the situation of housing on the Navajo reservation that straddles Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico.

DesignBuildBluff (DBB) gives architecture students at the University of Colorado and the University of Utah the opportunity to design and build new homes for Navajo families living in Bluff, Utah.

The students do all of the design work for a specific family, and the same students that do the designing do the building (hence the design-build name). The designs must focus on sustainability, and the houses must be 1000 square feet or less...
