University of Cambridge Sports Centre by Arup Associates | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

Located in the expanding western part of the city, the new University of Cambridge Sports Centre by Arup Associates is open to students, academic staff, and the public. The building sits at the edge of the town's green belt and efficiently responds both to its rural environment and to an extremely versatile program, as the first part of a three-phase scheme within the West Cambridge Masterplan.

To achieve an open-plan space that would be flexible enough to adapt to different sporting activities, the centre's dome-like roof, made of glulam beams, spans over 36 metres and opens up to let natural light and ventilation in. Photovoltaic cells, solar hot-water collectors, and external electro-mechanical actuators that control the façade louvers' opening and closing, contribute to the building's energy efficient strategy.

The Baku Crystal Hall stadium in Azerbaijan was completed in just eight months by GMP Architekten in time to host the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest.

The faceted modular structure, located on a peninsula outside the centre of Baku, was designed and completed in just eight months. Conceived as both a concert hall and a sports stadium, the 25,000-seat stadium comprises a lightweight steel structure with a faceted membrane facade intended to resemble cut crystal. Its facade is covered with 9500 LED lights, which bring the structure to life after dark.

With its red running tracks surrounded by black and white seats and floodlights stretching above the roof, London’s elliptically shaped Olympic Stadium resembles many other sporting venues.

But the building’s principal designer, Philip Johnson, believes it will lead a global movement towards sustainable architecture.

Mostly lightweight steel was used in the construction, the roof is made of PVC and the stadium boasts a fabric curtain, designed to minimize crosswinds. Moreover, the water collected from the roof is used to flush the toilets, while the earth embankments that surround the stadium protect the biodiversity of the site by encouraging plants to grow.

“We want to use as little material as possible,” said Johnson, of the architectural consultancy, Populous, which is headquartered in the US city of Kansas, but has offices around the world, including one in the British capital...

OFIS have designed a football stadium in Borisov, Belarus.

The concept takes into account the natural advantages of the location and the existing interventions within the terrain, while maintaining as many of the existing trees on site as possible. Besides 13.000 seats there is additional 3.000 m2 of public space, with traffic and parking organised between the forest.

The arena forms a unified rounded dome, with skin that gives an impression of a fragile stretched perforated textile pulled over the stadium skeleton. The covered space between the skin and the tribunes is a public street-a vestibule with public program and galleries above...

Twenty huge aluminium petals fold around this 42,000-seat stadium that Populous has completed in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, for the FIFA World Cup 2014.

The arena's design is unique. Its facade and roof are integrated and made up of 20 petal-shaped modules, designed to be higher on one of the stadium's sides, giving the impression that the sand dunes – which are common in the region – are moving. The design also enables more ventilation and light to come into the stadium.

The petal-shaped structures of the roof are made of steel trusses, covered on the outside with aluminium tiles, with thermal and acoustic insulation. Internally, they are coated with a PVC prestressed membrane. The parts are joined by translucent polycarbonate, which allows light to come through.

The Dunas Arena's roof was also designed to capture rainwater. Gutters collect the water and take it to nine tanks below the lower stands. As a result, up to 3,000 cubic meters may be captured and reused in the lavatories and for irrigating the pitch.

A consortium led by Australia’s LAVA has won an international competition to design a national stadium and sports village in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Its concept blends traditional Ethiopian architectural and construction practices with new technology to create a modern piece of infrastructure.

The team was selected by Ethiopia's Federal Sport Commission (FSC), which wants to replace the current 25,000-seat national stadium with a 60,000-seat stadium and related sports facilities. FSC wants to begin construction in 2014.

Traditional Ethiopian architecture includes examples of excavated historical structures, including ancient rock churches as well as dwellings and cisterns. The team's concept, which includes a sunken arena surrounded by grandstands formed from excavated material, captures elements of those traditional treatments in the stadium’s design...
