The reusing of waste materials to build homes is one sustainable approach to conserving the world’s natural materials.

While we have seen eco-friendly homes utilize materials such as wood or plastic, the use of discarded metal containers may strike as somewhat of a foreign concept. Yet, for architect Benjamin Garcia Saxe, this was a completely workable piece of building material for his housing project, aptly titled ‘Containers of Hope’.

These days its all about going "Green" and saving the planet and as many of us might think that switching off our geyser is enough there is actually so much more we can do. Generally we would expect a house made of waste materials to look something much like a shack however this concept of designing and building houses with waste and natural materials could just change the way we design houses in the near future.

Shipping container designs have become so ubiquitous they've merited their own exhibition...

For legions of prefab fans and practitioners, the world’s first exhibit devoted solely to container architecture was long overdue. The Container Architecture Expo opened in Ljubljana in 2010, and last month, after a stop in Paris, made its North American debut at the American Institute of Architects gallery in Seattle.

Made of steel or aluminum, shipping containers are an ideal building block: their resistance to hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes makes them well suited to such humanitarian projects as post-disaster housing, schools, health- and community. But their versatility, easy availability, and low cost have also captured the imaginations of countless designers and architects worldwide.

Built on a temporary site and made entirely from recycled shipping containers, London's latest retail park lays claim to be the world's first ever "pop-up" shopping mall.

The aptly-named “Boxpark” opened for business today along a vacant strip of east London’s fashionable Shoreditch High Street. It is composed of 60 standard-size shipping containers, stacked two stories high and five rows wide.

Unique Decameron Retail Store Made From Shipping Containers | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

Architects Marcio Kogan and Mariana Simas of Studio Mk27 designed a 250 square meter retail store in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Awarded the world’s best shopping building at the World Architecture Festival, the Decameron encompasses a low budget building solution for a rented space. It consists of a double height hangar and several colorful shipping containers arranged to open up to the street and a garden.

Two rows of shipping containers stacked on top of each other and painted in flamboyant colors make up the shell of the store. Placed perpendicular to the main street, the containers were designed to fit the space without interfering with the natural arrangement of trees.
