Kinetic Cloud Seeding pavilion creates shade with thousands of tiny balls made from recycled plastic bottles.

This lightweight pavilion may look like a simple canopy structure, but it's actually a fantastic kinetic environment that creates shade thanks to thousands of constantly rearranging tiny plastic balls made from recycled water bottles. Designers at MODU named the project "Cloud Seeding" which is supposed to reflect the effect of passing clouds the pavilion creates.

Multipod Studio have designed the Pop-Up House, a housing concept that is low cost, uses recyclable materials and can be built in four days.


The structure, compiled of insulating blocks and wooden panels, delivers affordable thermal insulation. Heating represents close to 28% of global energy consumption and is also one of the main household costs. Determined to develop solutions, Multipod Studio have patented a unique approach to passive construction that delivers outstanding thermal insulation at an affordable cost.

No special tools required, the house is assembled using lightweight and recyclable materials for quick installation.

The materials used are inexpensive and the thermal envelope means no additional heating is necessary. 
The Pop-Up House is an innovative concept that aims to challenge passive house construction.

LOT-EK's proposal for the Taichung City Cultural Center in Taiwan calls for building the new museum and library out of 1,620 recycled shipping containers.


New York-based architecture firm LOT-EK has made a name for itself by constructing buildings from recycled shipping containers. So it did't come as much of a surprise to learn that the firm's proposal for the Taichung City Cultural Center in western Taiwan called for building the new public library and fine arts museum out of cargo containers.


What is surprising is the scale of the project -- the proposal calls for 1,620 shipping containers to create an eco-friendly cultural landmark in the bustling Taiwanese city.

Ecologia Montréal, designed by Gervais Fortin, is the first single dweling home in Montreal, Canada aiming for a Platinum LEED certification.

The owner, in collaboration of the Ecologia Foundation, had the objective to reduce the home's ecological footprint by using healthy, local and non-toxic materials. The team demonstrated that it’s possible to build an ecological house without sacrificing good, contemporary design. All the materials were hand-picked from the most ecoresponsible suppliers of Quebec and featured a combination of exposed beams, large windows and an inner courtyard, creating a cozy and modern living space.

In addition to utilizing a geothermal system, he structure of the house is built with insulating concrete forms, mostly constituted of 100% recycled materials. As for the concrete used for the structure and as thermal mass, concrete contains 39% recycled materials. Ideal in an urban setting, a green roof completes it all.

Ecologia Montréal is the first house in Quebec to integrate the BioGeometry™ science, to control electromagnetic fields, to consider the energy of the earth and to infuse domestic water. The combination of all these factors harmonize the emotional, vital and spiritual levels of the home and its occupants...

Last week, as spring's balmy temperatures took a temporary dip into glacier territory, the two founding partners of architecture and urbanism firm Weiss/Manfredi led a hard hat tour of their new visitors center at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (opening in a mere six weeks!). Luckily, magnolias and cherry trees were already in bloom and a bright sun illuminated the mostly-transparent structure. The deceptively modest structure is nestled into a hill on the northeast corner of the site, so 50 percent of its envelope benefits from thermal efficiency. And like any ground-up civil structure worth its salt, it's sustainable, with a geoexchange system comprised of 28 heating and cooling wells, radiant floor heating, and landscaping made of postconsumer recycled building materials...

New York architect Stan Allen constructed this pavilion of bamboo scaffolding at a former airport in Taiwan. The temporary Infobox structure displays the architect's masterplan proposals to redevelop the site.

The scaffolding is entirely of bamboo sticks, tied with metal wire; the structure will be completely recycled when it is eventually dismantled.

Georgian architect Dachi Papuashvili has developed a concept for a cross-shaped micro home built from shipping containers to house a member of the church.

Papuashvili, who is based in Tbilisi, wanted to design a residence that could accommodate either a cleric or a layman as a retreat for study. The intention is to use waste materials, including shipping containers, to produce a prototype that can be easily constructed and would be entirely self-sufficient.

Using salvaged stuff not only has a positive environmental impact by reducing waste, it also offers architects materials typically unavailable.

According to the National Association of Homebuilders, “If all the lumber used to build the 1.2 million new homes constructed in the U.S. each year were laid end to end, it would extend 2 million miles—a sobering statistic.

Dutifully sorting waste, separating the metal and plastic from the paper for different recycling streams is part of modern life. Some areas even have food waste collection for community compost.

Architects and designers are taking notice of the opportunities offered by recycling and reuse. Using salvaged materials not only has a positive environmental impact by reducing waste, it also offers architects materials typically unavailable, such as old growth lumber.

La démarche requiert une structuration des filières de tri, collecte et recyclage sur les matériaux clefs, à une échelle industrielle et régionale si l'on veut généraliser l'emploi des matériaux recyclés et avoir un impact positif significatif sur plusieurs critères de développement durable qu'on pourrait associer au projet.

The WFH House in China, designed by Copenhagen-based studio, Arcgency is a contemporary design, constructed of three stacked shipping containers.


The house surrounded by lush vegetation  ”was designed to produce more energy than it consumes through the use of upcycled shipping containers as a steel frame, a sustainable bamboo facade, a rainwater collection system, solar cell-clad green roof and permeable paving.”

The interior is neat, dressed up in impeccable white, yet with splashes of color here and there. The main floor is envisioned as one singular space that accommodates the kitchen, dining area and the living room. The main advantage is that, this type of space delimitation allows a seamless transition between the indoor environments...

The WFH House is a perfect example of my inspiration for my Architecture Repurposing topic... it's sustainable, energy-efficient and innovative. It is a elegant representation of repurposing materials to be used in creative and intelligent alternate spacial use and design. The interior design is just as seamless and minimalistic as the outside and creates an open feel, as well. If you're at all curious about how the masterminds behind shipping container homes, do what they do, you'll find this blog interesting. The small array of pictures goes from the finished product all the way down the skeleton of the home and it's really quite fascinating to see the actual raw, industrial looking shipping containers being transformed into a modern, minimalistic and elegant home.

One of the best uses of shipping containers I have seen lay hidden in a re-purposed industrial hall near the center of Geneva, Switzerland. Helping form a new home for Group 8 architecture the containers make interesting use of the 8395 square foot facility which boast 29 foot high ceilings.

The containers formalize structured collective space embodying a collective form or a situation of their work: meeting rooms, cafeteria, lounge zone, bathrooms and showers, etc. “The other half of the scheme is in opposition with the containers’ structured zone: an open space enlightened by natural light travelling through the glass-roof.” All and all the project uses 16 recycled shipping containers in an amazing composition of object and function...

Set in the picturesque Durbanville wine valley on the outskirt of Cape Town, Vissershok Primary School is a rural school where most pupils are children of farm workers and underprivileged
communities living in Du Noon, a poverty-stricken township several kilometres away.
The Vissershok Container Classroom, sponsored by three SA companies- Woolworths, Safmarine and AfriSam, is a 12m recycled container converted into an independent classroom for 25 Grade R
(age 5-6) pupils.
The first phase of the project started with a design competition called “Making the Difference Through Design”. Run by Woolworths annually, the competition is aimed at introducing design to local
high school pupils. This year the brief calls for creative solutions on how a recycled container can be adapted to help under-resourced schools.

One salvaged door wasn't enough for this installation artist, who transformed this multi-storey structure into an eccentric landmark with 1,000 doors.

Using salvaged building materials like doors in your next building project is a good idea, but South Korean installation artist Choi Jeong-Hwa takes it to a whole new level. Using 1,000 recycled doors, Choi Jeong-Hwa transformed an otherwise nondescript, 10-storey facade into a eye-dazzling delight of colours and textures.

An old tip site turned recycling depot in the Melbourne outer suburb of Dandenong has proven a useful resource for architects and designers of some of 2011’s most acclaimed projects.

The Waste Converters Recycling Depot in Dandenong lists its regular clients as including eco-entrepreneur Joost Bakker, architect Jerry Wolveridge, restaurant Vue de Monde's Shannon Bennett, furniture designer Mark Tuckey and artist David Bromley.
