Urban Art: Vancouver’s Mixed-Use Tower by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG)

Urban Art: Vancouver’s Mixed-Use Tower by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

A BIG step forward for Vancouver’s latest mixed-use tower making international headlines, as the 497-foot tall proposal has received an “enthusiastic endorsement” from the city’s design panel.

The Bjarke Ingels Group-designed tower promises to add a twist to Vancouver’s skyline and create a new identity for an undefined section of town at the fringe of the city’s residential area. The 700,000 square foot complex – which contains shopping, housing and rental apartments – was praised by the panel for anchoring itself on a nine-story podium that occupies the disused, interstitial spaces found between the Granville Street Bridge’s entry and exit ramps.

BIG proposes to transform these spaces, which are dominated by cars and lack human activity, into a cultural and pedestrian destination. Glass “prisms” will provide retail and public space, while existing building facades and bridge surfaces will be converted into a dramatic outdoor gallery. In addition, Bjarke envisions the road which crosses below the bridge to become a host for outdoor markets, festivals and concerts. Impressed, panel member Peter Wreglesworth described the project as “whole composition that is urban art.”

Green Roofs Are Changing Architecture: Kowloon Rail Terminus

Green Roofs Are Changing Architecture: Kowloon Rail Terminus | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it
Aedas designs a railway station like a hill you can walk on.

It used to be that roofs were up top where nobody could see them, covered in gravel and full of mechanical equipment. Architectural renderings were pretty much all shot from eye level. Not anymore; green roof technology is making roofs into habitable architecture, and changing the way architects think of buildings.

The Express Rail Link - West Kowloon Terminus by Aedas will connect Hong Kong to the National High Speed Rail Network. The terminal's roof is a series of ribbons that meet ground level, turning the building into a big walkable (climbable?) hill...

VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre by Perkins+Will

VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre by Perkins+Will | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

The VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre creates a harmonious balance between architecture and landscape—from a visual and ecological perspective. Inspired by the organic forms and natural systems of a native orchid, the1,765-square-metre building is organized into undulating green roof ‘petals’ that float above rammed earth and concrete walls. Designed to exceed LEED Platinum status, the Visitor Centre is pursuing the Living Building Challenge—the most stringent measurement of sustainability in the built environment. The facility uses on-site, renewable sources to achieve net-zero energy on an annual basis; sequesters enough carbon to achieve carbon neutrality; uses filtered rainwater for the building’s greywater requirements; and treats 100% of blackwater in an on-site bioreactor...

NW Beijing Inc. Research Center and Offices

NW Beijing Inc. Research Center and Offices | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

The urban concept strategy by Maxthreads Architectural Design for the NW Beijing technology and research center maximizes open public space on the ground level of the site, including a canal walk, open spaces and car park area. The mass of the new building is therefore raised into the first floor level.

This open space is important to activate the site and the new research center. It is also important as an appropriate take off point or point of termination for the overall site area sustainable mechanics. They are proposing a generous, diagonal underpass that emerges from the site environment...

Solar Carve Tower at the High Line | Studio Gang Architects

Solar Carve Tower at the High Line | Studio Gang Architects | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

Chicago-based architect, Jeanne Gang, just unveiled the latest project planned to border New York City’s beloved High Line. The 180,000 square-foot office tower with ground level retail will replace an existing, disused meatpacking plant along 10th Avenue between 13th and 14th streets. It will feature a glass facade that is intelligently shaped to avoid the disruption of light, air and views from the High Line.

The gem-like façade displays the exciting architectural potential of expanded notions of solar-driven zoning—and a skyscraper that enhances the public life of the city in ways that a stand-alone icon cannot.

Dubbed the Solar Carve Tower, the mid-rise structure is currently pending city approval and is planned for completion in 2015.

The Greenest Building In New York May Well Be A Public Toilet

The Greenest Building In New York May Well Be A Public Toilet | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

A new comfort station in the Riverside Park will be the first building in New York certified by the Living Building Challenge.

Frederick Law Olmstead designed New York's Riverside Park in 1875. The infamous Robert Moses ran a highway through it in 1935, but didn't kill it; "Today, the mature trees and sweeping lawns of the park tend to disguise the transport-oriented nature of the park’s construction." Occupying part of the park is the Riverside Tennis Club, which is in need of new washrooms to replace their current porta-potties. They hired Rick Cook of Cook + Fox to design them, and are building the bogs to the Living Building Challenge standard, perhaps the toughest green standard there is...

one40william

one40william | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

one40william is one of Perth’s most significant and influential new buildings, enlivening the city’s retail centre and setting a benchmark in environmental sustainability – achieving a 5 Star Green Star Office Design rating...

Located above an underground railway station, the site is unusual in that it includes heritage buildings, major street frontage and a pedestrian mall.

Based on responses to workplace design, public realm, climate and context, the building has been designed from the inside out rather than fitting functions into a predetermined aesthetic.

One of the fundamental design principles was to develop a new ground plane that blurs the boundaries between public and private, social and workplace, circulation and interaction.

The resulting design incorporates a series of laneways and arcades that connect with the surrounding urban fabric and provide access through the site.

Montreal’s Centre for Sustainable Development opens its doors | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

The Centre for Sustainable Development, the first commercial building in the downtown core of a major Canadian city to seek LEED Platinum certification in the category of new construction, was inaugurated at the end of October 2011 by its eight socially and environmentally minded member organisations and their donor partners. The construction site has given way to an environmental and technological showcase in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles.

“The Centre for Sustainable Development is one of the most energy-efficient office buildings in Quebec. We paid particular attention to the choice of materials and to the environmental management of energy, water and waste, as well as to social issues,” says Chair Sidney Ribaux. The $27M building is equipped with a geothermal heating and cooling system, a high-performance thermal envelope, triple-pane windows, and an approximately 800sq m green roof...
