Snøhetta's Powerhouse at Brattorkaia is the World's Northernmost Energy-Positive Office Building

Snøhetta's Powerhouse at Brattorkaia is the World's Northernmost Energy-Positive Office Building | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

Powerhouse at Brattorkaia will make use of solar cells, heat pumps, and sea water to become the world's most Northernmost energy-positive building. Located in downtown Trondheim, this office building was designed by Snøhetta, and received the environmental classification "Outstanding" from BREEAM NOR. It's yet another example of why Norway is such a sustainability role model and demonstrates that renewables make sense even in cold northern climes.

Biophilic Design at the High Line: 510 West 22nd Street by COOKFOX Architects

Biophilic Design at the High Line: 510 West 22nd Street by COOKFOX Architects | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

COOKFOX designs a biophilic office building along the High Line that looks to connect with nature and serve as the next version of the sustainable workplace...

While One Bryant Park—the firm’s groundbreaking Platinum LEED tower—distinguished itself on the city skyline with a glacial, shard-like glass profile- 510 West 22nd Street responds directly to the neighboring elevated-rail-turned-urban-park and seeks to connect tenants with the landscape.

The building’s glass curtain wall has dark metal mullions that reflect the High Line’s steel structure and brise-soleils that reduce glare and mitigate heat. The building also has a High Line of its own with a rooftop garden, complete with mobile planters on train tracks.

Inside, high ceilings, abundant daylight, and an under-floor ventilation system create a healthy environment. Views were optimized by cantilevering the floor slabs, making way for unbroken expanses of glass on the perimeter. Operable windows provide access to fresh air and let in the sounds of the birds who live in the High Line’s birch thicket just outside.

510 will seek a LEED Platinum rating, banking not just on the energy saving measures of its high-performance envelope and efficient mechanical systems, but on the strides it takes in establishing an environment conducive to the health and well-being of its human inhabitants...

Net-zero Architecture: Morphosis' new Culver City office

Net-zero Architecture: Morphosis' new Culver City office | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

While Morphosis is known for their jagged steel surfaces and off-center forms, the firm has always been interested in sustainability. Its own new office in Culver City represents this philosophy,as the largest net-zero energy building in Los Angeles, and one of the greenest offices in the country.

The fairly rectangular structure, located just a few feet from the new light rail Expo Line’s elevated tracks in Culver City, gets most of its energy from photovoltaics—a 2,800-square-foot array sitting on top of a shaded parking canopy outside. But what makes it all work are the energy savings: It significantly reduces loads through several low-tech, high-tech, and even revolutionary techniques.

Greening the Office Park: Centra at Metropark

Greening the Office Park: Centra at Metropark | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it
In suburban Iselin, New Jersey, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates coaxes an archetypically introverted office block out of its shell.

For the average person, the phrase "office park" likely conjures the tiresome concrete blocks that have proliferated across the country since the middle of the twentieth century. But for the architects at Kohn Pederson Fox Associates (KPF) and their client, real estate development company Hampshire, an aging office park in a quiet New Jersey town offered an opportunity to rethink the oft-maligned building type. The result is Centra at Metropark, also known simply as "Centra," the keystone of a master plan by the New York arm of the ardently international KPF. Though Centra works on a significantly smaller scale than some of the firm's larger projects, the concepts it engages—particularly its holistic treatment of site and structure—remain the same...

The UK’s Most ‘Outstanding’ Green Building

The UK’s Most ‘Outstanding’ Green Building | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

BREEAM is the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings, with 200,000 buildings certified and around a million registered for assessment since it was first launched in 1990.

The largest commercial office in Manchester has now become the highest scoring BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ building in the UK with a score of 95.32%.

Designed by 3DReid, The Co-operative Group’s new £115 million low-energy, highly sustainable headquarters brings their 3,500 staff under one roof in a spectacular 500,000 square foot building.

The building, known as 1 Angel Square, has been designed to deliver a 50 per cent reduction in energy consumption compared to The Co-operative’s current Manchester complex and an 80 per cent reduction in carbon. This will lead to operating costs being lowered by up to 30 per cent...

Eneco sustainable headquarters in Rotterdam, Netherlands

Eneco sustainable headquarters in Rotterdam, Netherlands | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

Amsterdam-based Hofman Dujardin Architects, in collaboration with Fokkema & Partners, has helped sustainable energy company Eneco practice what it preaches with the design of its headquarters in Rotterdam. The 14-floor office has been operational since April, with employees enjoying one of the Europe's best workspaces.

The heart of the building is a central atrium surrounded by a light-filled meeting centre with a reception space, meeting rooms, working areas, informal meeting areas, lounges, restaurant, service desk and auditorium. Sun collectors on the south façade and on the roof track the sun throughout the day, absorbing the maximum amount of solar energy.

The working and meeting areas are designed to be energetic islands floating on a white terrazzo floor. Some islands are open spaces and others enclosed for privacy but they are all executed with vibrant colours and materials. Those on the ground floor are red, purple and orange, while those on the first floor are in different shades of verdant green (meeting rooms) and blue (working spaces). The diversity of color and materials on the work islands are not only lively and inviting but give the different spaces specific identities and atmospheres that enable people to orientate themselves better in the office.
