Organic Architecture at the University of Versailles Science Library, France

Organic Architecture at the University of Versailles Science Library, France | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

Paris-based architects Badia-Berger Architectes have recently completed the University of Versailles Science Library, in France- an efficient building composed of three juxtaposed volumes intersected by a series of voids.

The building acts as a connector inside the university campus, uniting the eastern sloped park and the western sporting grounds, which determines that it doesn't have a main façade, rather, a central position from which its multidirectional nature stems.

The library is comprised of three juxtaposing volumes intersected by a series of voids, which allow for abundant daylight to pour into the building, as well as creating a series of transparencies between the two connected terrains — the park and the sporting grounds. The three separate volumes harbour respectively the entry hall, the reading rooms and internal spaces. "The shape is an expression of our perception of the program and our response to the requirements of a low energy building," state architects Marie-Hélène Badia and Didier Berger, "fully acknowledging lighting and thermal comfort as well as highlighting the site's contrasts."

Prefab, Glue Laminated Timber Ribs Form This Inspiring "Low-Energy" Library

Prefab, Glue Laminated Timber Ribs Form This Inspiring "Low-Energy" Library | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it
This Norwegian library is a lovely specimen of engineered wood arrayed in a rib-like concept.

It's been said that architecture is a cultural repository of sorts; the structure, materiality and aesthetics chosen for a building can express a lot about a society's values and intentions -- or at least the client's or architect's.

Case in point are libraries; faced with changing times, there are some grandiose and gimmicky, high-tech attempts to draw more patrons in, but in true Scandinavian fashion, Norwegian architecture firm Helen & Hard's latest low-energy library and cultural center keeps it urbanely scaled, yet inspiring.

New York Library / TEN Arquitectos

New York Library / TEN Arquitectos | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

In a neighborhood of high-end retail and luxury residences, this new branch library will fulfill a much needed role as a public space and touchstone for the local community and visiting tourists across from the Museum of Modern Art.

Despite the library’s site being predominantly below grade and set at the base of a new 40-story hotel, this design proposal transforms the dark, subterranean space into an inviting, open and light-filled civic landscape in the heart of Manhattan...

Don't know if it is practical to retrofit but it is a clever use of space and creates accessibility at a somewhat non-technical level.

Between Books & Trees: A unique, ecological design for a new public library

Between Books & Trees: A unique, ecological design for a new public library | sustainable architecture | Scoop.it

JAJA shared their latest proposal, which was awarded third prize, for a new public library in Daegu, South Korea.

Pushing the boundary of the notion that a library must be a contained, quiet and nearly isolated space, JAJA’s proposal treats the library as massive public zone for the fostering of communal creativity, and dissolves the separation between inside and nature.

JAJA, typically noted for their form making abilities, have opted for a minimialistic formal language of the architecture, so that the streamlined library can capture the textures of the existing trees and the books within to create a cohesive experience that celebrates both.

“We propose to merge the spatial qualities of the trees and the potential of the library into one cohesive identity. The library will merge the exterior and interior through a series of spatial transitions within an inclusive environment for the local community,” explained the architects.
