UChicago's new ecological field station in Southwestern Michigan raises the bar for sustainable and energy-efficient educational facilities.

The Warren Woods Ecological Field Station is the first Passive House-certified laboratory in North America and only the fifth worldwide. Built to Passive House standards — an innovative design process that results in minimal energy requirements for heating and cooling —the field station and accompanying cabins set a new benchmark for sustainable and energy-efficient educational facilities.

Located in the heart of Westerville, Ohio, the Highlands Park Family Aquatic Center is a complete replacement of an existing 30-year-old facility.

The sustainable design strategy utilizes rain water management, green roofs, rain gardens, natural building ventilation, LED lighting, low flow plumbing fixtures, recycled / renewable building materials, bioswales and pervious concrete parking. The project is designed to fit within its natural environment. The use of wood, stone & rock, and natural water features with intuitive landscaping elements not only create a natural backdrop for the pool amenities, but also blend the project into its surroundings.

The urban concept strategy by Maxthreads Architectural Design for the NW Beijing technology and research center maximizes open public space on the ground level of the site, including a canal walk, open spaces and car park area. The mass of the new building is therefore raised into the first floor level.

This open space is important to activate the site and the new research center. It is also important as an appropriate take off point or point of termination for the overall site area sustainable mechanics. They are proposing a generous, diagonal underpass that emerges from the site environment...
