At the base of Echo Mountain in Phoenix, a geometric home by Wendell Burnette opens up to the surrounding desert landscape, while maintaining the property’s natural vegetation and rocky ground surface. 

A lone saguaro marks the southwest corner of Thomas and Laura Hyland’s property, which is situated adjacent to the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. The structure’s main living volume is elevated and faced in glass, overlooking a descending pathway that leads to a pool tucked into the site...

>The study entitled Pilot-scale data provide enhanced estimates of the life cycle energy and emissions profile of algae biofuels produced via hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is the first to analyze data from a commercial-scale algae-to-energy farm. Researchers examined field data from Sapphire Energy facilities in Las Cruces and Columbus, New Mexico.

 

Researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory recently concluded that 14 percent of land in the continental United States, or the combined area of Texas and New Mexico, could be used to grow and produce algae for conversion into transportation fuels. In 2008, the U.S. Department of Energy found that for algae fuel to completely replace petroleum in the United States it would need roughly 30,000 square kilometers of land, or half the area of South Carolina, so the potential is certainly there for a massive transition from dirty oil-based transportation fuels to cleaner burning domestic green crude from algae.<

Morphosis Architects incorporates an innovative stainless steel facade screen to mitigate heat gain for new academic building.

Los Angeles–based Morphosis delivered a 100,000-square-foot, five-story building that is currently completing construction on Cornell University's Computing and Information Sciences (CIS) program structure.

While in essence a simple, efficient, rectangular plan and elevation, the design features several elements—including a twisting stainless steel sun screen and a protruding arm of the upper floors hovering above the main entrance—that make it an unmistakable product of Morphosis as well as a suitable looking enclosure for a discipline forged by the realities of the digital age.

The Baku Crystal Hall stadium in Azerbaijan was completed in just eight months by GMP Architekten in time to host the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest.

The faceted modular structure, located on a peninsula outside the centre of Baku, was designed and completed in just eight months. Conceived as both a concert hall and a sports stadium, the 25,000-seat stadium comprises a lightweight steel structure with a faceted membrane facade intended to resemble cut crystal. Its facade is covered with 9500 LED lights, which bring the structure to life after dark.

The Gippsland Water Factory’s Vortex Centre houses office and laboratory functions and an interpretive experience for a major new water recycling plant. The vortex form of the building strongly expresses the dynamic movement of fluids down a pipe, at the same time providing a unique internal environment.

Combining cost performance, aesthetics, water education and ecological intelligence, the 650m2 facility is a beacon of exemplary sustainable design. The centre was designed as a teaching building, taking inspiration from a giant oculus, with a shell made up of seven barrels that fit into one another as they decrease in size, thereby resembling a vortex.

Un centro de reciclaje de agua con referencias fabriles y forma muy  explicativa de vórtex, para acoger actividades de formación y divulgación. Es además un edificio de bajo consumo enrgético con sistemas pasivos.
