Last of incandescent light bulbs are banned

Last of incandescent light bulbs are banned | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
The final phase of a ban on incandescent light bulbs goes into effect Wednesday, leaving consumers with pricier energy-efficient options that are expected to save people money over time.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

Skip the fluorescents...go LED!  Or better yet, design your space to not need artificial light (at least for the daytime hours).

Sustainability Science
How might we keep the lights on, water flowing, and natural world vaguely intact? It starts with grabbing innovative ideas/examples to help kick down our limits and inspire a more sustainable world. We implement with rigorous science backed by hard data.

Welcome to Sustainability Science

Welcome to Sustainability Science | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

Welcome to my curation site for the emerging science of sustainability.

Here you will find an array of stories, examples, relevant cautionary tales, and data related to our hunt for a more sustainable economy with a reduced ecological footprint.  While my students, colleagues and I are interested in all aspects of sustainability, these pages have an historc emphasis on:

- human population growth rates/demography

- product design/construction, especially:

    - triple bottomline

    - life cycle analyses (LCA)

    - sustainable supply chains

 - carbon footprints (especially carbon "finprints" of seafood)

 - food production/distribution systems

 - energy production/storage systems, especially:

    - dams and flow diversions

    - wind turbines

    - tidal power

    - solar panel efficiency/material advances

    - fuel cell design/material advances

 - general building design/construction, especially:

     - green roof/wall construction and plant palletes

     - lighting systems

     - elegant design

     - redevelopment/reuse

 - urban planning

 - role of mobile technology in fostering sustainability

 - elegant and effective communication

Thanks for visiting.  Please enjoy and let me know if I can answer any questions or be of any other help.

PIRatE Lab's insight:
"Trying to restore regulatory sanity" is a great goal.  Bailing on existing science and ignoring research findings you deem inconvenient is the opposite of "sanity."  These folks are deeply disappointing and seem hell bent on setting us down a road with fewer protections and safeguards.

I'll simply note that the burden of proof here falls on the regulator/activist/watchdog communities.

Lights of Human Activity Shine in NASA's Image of Earth at Night

NASA scientists have just released the first new global map of Earth at night since 2012. This nighttime look at our home planet, dubbed the Black Marble, provides researchers with a unique perspective of human activities around the globe. By studying Earth at night, researchers can investigate how cities expand, monitor light intensity to estimate energy use and economic activity, and aid in disaster response.

Electricity’s Carbon Footprint in U.S. Shrinks, Sets Record | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
U.S. energy-related carbon pollution fell in 2016, part of a decade-long trend as utilities use less coal in favor of natural gas.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Super cool trend.  Now if we can only bend that arc even lower.

The reality is that our planet is switching to renewable energy, the only question is how fast.

PIRatE Lab's insight:
An interesting bit of history here in the context of technology.  While there are clearly other drivers, I had not heard this tidbit about GM in the 1920s.  We tend to think of the rapid pace of innovation as a primary pusher of our buy-buy-buy mentality...but we should not forget the often baked in failure rates and planned obsolescence crafted to keep you buys more (and wasting more).
