Shipping company Hapag-Lloyd connects first ship to shore power

Shipping company Hapag-Lloyd connects first ship to shore power | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

When most small boats are at a dock, they typically make an electrical connection to shore power, obtaining 120-VAC from the marina or dock facility. Some larger boats may connect to 240-VAC shore power. Big boats typically can't access electricity that would be needed and so run their own power generation plants when connected to a dock during loading or unloading for a day or two. They just continue to run on electrical power they generate themselves, running their often dirty, diesel engines in port.  These emissions are historically not well regulated by local emissions laws as they are considered an itinerant emitter.

PIRatE Lab's insight:

The North Star is one of the first of this new breed of "plugable" cargo ships which can plug into special sockets when in port and so depower the entirety of its onboard generators.

There is an interesting episode airing on the Smithsonian Channel’s Mighty Ships series about this ship, but I can't find a full episode.  I only was able to find a few snippets (like this one), none of which show the electrical coupling aspects.  If you can find it, only the first 10 minutes are worth the watch (the rest is a typcial fake reality drama when no drama actually exists thing).

The Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach is moving full bore with adopting such requirements for long haul freighters/terminals amongst a host of approaches to minimize emissions (known as the Clean Air Action Plan) generally.  Lastly you might be interested in both a nice example of a Life Cycle Analysis for the goings on at the Port of Los Angeles and a guide for how entities can improve their emissions.

Opinion | My company’s carbon footprint is the size of a small country. We need to act. | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
First, investment in operating sustainably delivers cost savings. Mars is already capitalizing on the falling prices of renewable energy and the long-term cost savings of clean technology. This has helped to reduce the carbon emissions of our 150 factories around the world by 25 percent. We are already using enough renewable energy to make all our M&M’s. In fact, we now purchase enough renewable energy to fuel our entire operations in five countries and plan to make that 11 countries in 2018. All of this is delivered at the same cost, or lower, as fossil fuel.

Quantis Introduces New Land Use Guidance to Slash Global Supply Chain Emissions | Sustainable Brands

Quantis Introduces New Land Use Guidance to Slash Global Supply Chain Emissions | Sustainable Brands | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Reducing deforestation and other unsustainable land use practices is imperative and could help capture as much as a sixth of the carbon necessary to reach global climate targets, according to the UN-endorsed Bonn agreement on deforestation. Corporations, particularly those with vested interests in forest resources and rely heavily on agriculture and forestry, stand to gain considerably by reducing impacts, a move which would also positively affect climate. As these companies set objectives to align with science-based goals, a formal methodology is needed to guide them towards embedding land use-generated emissions in their corporate and product footprints.

Report: Corporate Performance Falls Short on Supply Chain Due Diligence for Conflict Materials | Sustainable Brands | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
The Technology sector dominated the ranking, outperforming all other industry groups analyzed. On the other end of the spectrum, Oil & Gas, Steel, Business Services and Building Materials received the lowest scores, reflecting a compliance-only focus, instead of the proactive, due-diligence-based strategies implemented by the top five leading companies: Intel, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Apple and Royal Philips. This is consistent with last year’s report, demonstrating a greater need for transparency in these sectors.

How ‘Decent Work’ And Climate Resilience Grow Together

How ‘Decent Work’ And Climate Resilience Grow Together | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Whilst climate change has disruptive and sometimes devastating consequences, confronting it has great potential for job creation. Good jobs. Decent jobs that provide livelihood, protection and dignity. The kinds of jobs that ensure sustainable and inclusive growth. The ILO calls these "green jobs."

Via EcoVadis
more...
Stephane Bilodeau's curator insight, September 2, 9:28 PM
We must learn to recognize these opportunities and design strategic environmental policies driven by a decent work agenda. There is an urgent need for green employment policies in:

1) Prevention—before disasters occur
2) Mitigation—transitioning to clean energy
3) Adaptation—waste recycling, and reusing of materials such as plastic.

This process of change at work will require the combined efforts of governments and of employers and workers through social dialogue. Day by day, workplace practices, skills, product design and job profiles are being adjusted. Most automobile manufacturers produce more fuel-efficient (or electric) cars; farmers apply more climate-resilient growing methods with organic fertilizers; enterprises use more energy-efficient techniques.

This new working dynamic makes a strong case for thinking in terms of processes to enable the greening of economies and production, rather than a dichotomy between unsustainable, dirty jobs being discontinued, and sustainable, clean ones being created.
