Welcome to Sustainability Science

Welcome to Sustainability Science | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

Welcome to my curation site for the emerging science of sustainability.

Here you will find an array of stories, examples, relevant cautionary tales, and data related to our hunt for a more sustainable economy with a reduced ecological footprint.  While my students, colleagues and I are interested in all aspects of sustainability, these pages have an historc emphasis on:

- human population growth rates/demography

- product design/construction, especially:

    - triple bottomline

    - life cycle analyses (LCA)

    - sustainable supply chains

 - carbon footprints (especially carbon "finprints" of seafood)

 - food production/distribution systems

 - energy production/storage systems, especially:

    - dams and flow diversions

    - wind turbines

    - tidal power

    - solar panel efficiency/material advances

    - fuel cell design/material advances

 - general building design/construction, especially:

     - green roof/wall construction and plant palletes

     - lighting systems

     - elegant design

     - redevelopment/reuse

 - urban planning

 - role of mobile technology in fostering sustainability

 - elegant and effective communication

Thanks for visiting.  Please enjoy and let me know if I can answer any questions or be of any other help.

Bad Drivers In Los Angeles? It's Not Your Imagination; New Study Says We Truly Stink

Bad Drivers In Los Angeles? It's Not Your Imagination; New Study Says We Truly Stink | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
A new survey of "Best Drivers" ranks Los Angeles and Glendale among the absolute worst. And the survey includes more than 200 cities.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
What drives drivers to drive poorly?  Clearly training is part of it, but frustration and lack of social cues and reinforcement to drive responsibly are part of it.  I wonder if anyone has done a experimental test of reducing the amount of cars on the road (via more public transportation, more bike lanes, etc.) and then examine the per capita vehicle accident rate.

Anyone?

How fracking can contribute to climate change | Environment | The Guardian

How fracking can contribute to climate change | Environment | The Guardian | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
One of the justifications for fracking is the use of natural gas as a bridging fuel between coal and a low-carbon future. However natural gas is mostly methane, which has strong global warming impacts in its own right. Natural gas therefore only provides climate benefits over coal if the leakage is no more than 2-3%.…

The Rise of Small Farm Robots — Food is the New Internet — Medium

The Rise of Small Farm Robots - Food is the New Internet - Medium
Or why the miniaturization of farm machinery will help encourage small, diverse farms.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
When we think about the future in ten years, we’re going to see smaller machines rather than big ones,” said Rowbot’s founder Kent Cavender-Bares in a recent conversation of This Week in Startups podcast. The 64-row corn planters that crawl across the Heartland today are so large and expensive that they only make sense for the most gargantuan, and debt-worthy, farmers. They’re so heavy they compact the soil. And they don’t work if you decide to plant a rye, sorghum or anything besides corn. In contrast, Rowbot is small enough to get between the rows of corn, dropping fertilizer in microdoses, when the crop needs it. Much less fertilizer gets wasted and runs off the field to contaminate the water supply. These are things a big tractor simply cannot do. “Let’s say we just wanted to mix corn and soybeans on the same field. Today you can’t do that easily at scale.

In defense of the reasonable Republican — Culture War Dispatches — Medium

In defense of the reasonable Republican - Culture War Dispatches - Medium
A much-shared article is a conservative cry for mature political discourse
PIRatE Lab's insight:
While not about "sustainability" per se, I think this article makes several good points.  And points relative to an effect improvement of our current situation: civility and comity.  Before we can move forward on the myriad of problems, we need to be able to actually dialog and interact and debate with one another.  Too often we get bogged down in the stupid political coverage or the raging rift that some prefer to widen with every day.  There is another way.  It is called "being an adult" and hearing one another before jumping in with our our opinions.
