Sustainability Science
How might we keep the lights on, water flowing, and natural world vaguely intact? It starts with grabbing innovative ideas/examples to help kick down our limits and inspire a more sustainable world. We implement with rigorous science backed by hard data.

Politicians need to address transport taboos, not just new technology, to meet carbon targets, say researchers

Politicians need to address transport taboos, not just new technology, to meet carbon targets, say researchers | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Transport accounts for 30% of carbon dioxide emissions in the EU, with emissions rising 36% between 1990 and 2007. New research has found a need to dissect the widely-held view that new technologies, such as biofuel and improved aircraft design, will result in carbon reduction targets being met.

Climate engineering ideas no longer considered pie in the sky

Climate engineering ideas no longer considered pie in the sky | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON — As international efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions stall, schemes to slow global warming using fantastical technologies once dismissed as a sideshow are getting serious consideration in Washington.

China seeks to fight smog by brainstorm: All ideas welcome

China seeks to fight smog by brainstorm: All ideas welcome | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
The city of Wuhan is considering building skyscrapers coated with a high-tech substance that can "eat" air pollutants. An artist is offering to suck particulates out of Beijing's dirty skies using a giant vacuum-cleaner-type device and sell jewelry made with the collected contaminants. One researcher is suggesting an "urban wind passage" in the Chinese capital, regulating the height and density of buildings so that smog has a dispersal channel.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

Very interesting to see the arc of history repeating.  I recall many of the crazy ideas here in California.  A similar story was had when we needed water during a drought.  And for our famously traffic-clogged highways.

When you go down the same road creating a problem we know is going to happen and just think you will "deal with it" later, the next phase is the outlandish responses to dealing with those problems.  Eventually we get to the mature adult phase wherein we actually tackle the problems of our own creation.  It would be nice if we could just jump to the last phase in the first place.

20 Crucial Terms Every 21st Century Futurist Should Know

20 Crucial Terms Every 21st Century Futurist Should Know | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

We live in an era of accelerating change, when scientific and technological advancements are arriving rapidly. As a result, we are developing a new language to describe our civilization as it evolves. Here are 20 terms and concepts that you'll need to navigate our future.

Via Szabolcs Kósa
PIRatE Lab's insight:

An interesting compilation of terms.  Perhaps most interesting to me is the utter "out of touch" aspect of some of these terms.  Most of very human/wealthy human-centric and are likely to be niche terms at best.  Only the "anthropocene" and "mule" really seem to stretch beyond our wealthy, western lifestyles.  Nevertheless a good read to stimulate your thinking about what the future may bring.

Climate fix could make warming worse?

Attempts to reverse the impacts of global warming by injecting reflective particles into the stratosphere could make matters worse, say researchers.

A new study suggests the idea, seen as a last-ditch way to deal with runaway climate change, could cut rainfall in the tropics by 30%.

PIRatE Lab's insight:

As with all such geoengineering efforts, we would quite literally be rolling the dice; will it work or will the knock-on effects be worse than climate change?

I feel our technofix-loving society is increasingly moving towards such responses as we appear incapable of dealing with climate change in a responsible manner.  Much work needs to be done here and I would hope more caution is urged.  When the time comes, I fear that panic and desperation may be a powerful motivating factor to "do something...anything" despite the potential downsides.
