Norway Investments in Renewable Energy 'Could Change the World'

Norway Investments in Renewable Energy 'Could Change the World' | #Sustainability | Scoop.it

Brandon Baker With more than $750 billion of holdings in its sovereign wealth fund, Norway is on the brink of potentially making renewable energy investments around the world.

Erna Solberg, who will be named Norway’s second female prime minister, has already heard proposals from her government to use sovereign wealth fund money to invest in sustainable companies and projects in developing countries, Climate News Network reported today. Leader of the conservative party, Solberg won the election in September.
She hasn’t publicly discussed the specific companies and projects the country might invest in, but there are already high hopes.
“If Norway actually does this, it will be an unprecedented shift in the global investment community and also for tangible action on climate change,” said Samantha Smith, head of the global climate and energy initiative at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Financial analysts predict that other nations will follow Norway’s lead and also invest in renewable energy projects. Pension funds in Denmark and the Netherlands already support the renewables sector.

#Sustainability
Sustainability is the capacity to endure. In ecology the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. For humans, sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which has ecological, economic, political and cultural dimensions. Carbon neutral laneway home—an innovative use of green tech! | #Sustainability | Scoop.it
Thanks to innovative zoning, hundreds of beautiful laneway homes have been built in Vancouver. This has increased urban density and provided an affordable option for people to live in the core of a city where homes sell for more than $1 million dollars.
Organic Social Media's insight:

In a sprawling city like Edmonton, Alberta, infill garage suites, or laneway homes, are a rarity. So when we heard that Karly Coleman and Andy Hengst were building a carbon neutral, net-zero garage suite in Edmonton’s Westmount neighbourhood we just had to see it.

“Alberta at a Crossroads” Hasn’t it Always Been So? - Oil Sands Ken | #Sustainability | Scoop.it

The Royalty Review Advisory Panel Report is finally released.  “Alberta at a Crossroads” is generally seen as a status quo document, affirming much of the excellent 2007 royalty review royalty framework and approach.  That is true for oil sands royalty rates but there are some substantial rethinking differences on transparency, disclosure and accountability about how the royalty system operates.   I will focus my comments mostly on the oil sands in this post.

A Quantitative Review of Urban Ecosystem Service Assessments: Concepts, Models, and Implementation

A Quantitative Review of Urban Ecosystem Service Assessments: Concepts, Models, and Implementation | #Sustainability | Scoop.it
Although a number of comprehensive reviews have examined global ecosystem services (ES), few have focused on studies that assess urban ecosystem services (UES). Given that more than half of the world’s population lives in cities, understanding the dualism of the provision of and need for UES is of critical importance. Which UES are the focus of research, and what types of urban land use are examined? Are models or decision support systems used to assess the provision of UES? Are trade-offs considered? Do studies of UES engage stakeholders? To address these questions, we analyzed 217 papers derived from an ISI Web of Knowledge search using a set of standardized criteria. The results indicate that most UES studies have been undertaken in Europe, North America, and China, at city scale. Assessment methods involve bio-physical models, Geographical Information Systems, and valuation, but few study findings have been implemented as land use policy.

Here’s How Canada Could Have 100% Renewable Electricity by 2035

Here’s How Canada Could Have 100% Renewable Electricity by 2035 | #Sustainability | Scoop.it
Canada could become 100 per cent reliant on low-carbon electricity in just 20 years and reduce its emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, a new study shows. The report calls for bold policies to be adopted immediately in order for Canada to transition to a sustainable society. “Twenty years ago Canada was a leader on the climate change file. But today our reputation on this issue is in tatters,” James Meadowcroft, political science professor at Carleton University and one of the report’s authors told DeSmog Canada. “It is time for us to get serious and take vigorous action to move towards a low carbon emission economy.” The report is a collaboration between 60 Canadian scholars and outlines a 10-point policy framework to achieve dramatic emission reductions. At the top of the list is the need to put a price on carbon which was unanimously recommended by the report’s authors.
