Edmontonians, the Environment and our Future - Don Iveson for Mayor

Edmontonians, the Environment and our Future - Don Iveson for Mayor | #Sustainability | Scoop.it
Organic Social Media's insight:

The same opportunity exists in our resource industries, especially in the oil sands, for Edmonton researchers and entrepreneurs to lead with innovative technology that reduces energy requirements, water requirements, labour requirements, or increases durability and yield. In other words, innovate to do business cleaner, greener, cheaper, faster and safer. This, again, is how we earn a reputation for being part of the solution, which is good for Northern Alberta’s social license to carry on business and get our products to market in the shorter term. In the longer term, I trust the innovation that occurs here will form the basis for new companies that help in other parts of the world and in other sectors.

#Sustainability
Sustainability is the capacity to endure. In ecology the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. For humans, sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which has ecological, economic, political and cultural dimensions. http://ow.ly/VAzCJ

“Alberta at a Crossroads” Hasn’t it Always Been So? - Oil Sands Ken

“Alberta at a Crossroads” Hasn’t it Always Been So? - Oil Sands Ken | #Sustainability | Scoop.it

The Royalty Review Advisory Panel Report is finally released.  “Alberta at a Crossroads” is generally seen as a status quo document, affirming much of the excellent 2007 royalty review royalty framework and approach.  That is true for oil sands royalty rates but there are some substantial rethinking differences on transparency, disclosure and accountability about how the royalty system operates.   I will focus my comments mostly on the oil sands in this post.

Here’s How Canada Could Have 100% Renewable Electricity by 2035

Here’s How Canada Could Have 100% Renewable Electricity by 2035 | #Sustainability | Scoop.it
Canada could become 100 per cent reliant on low-carbon electricity in just 20 years and reduce its emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, a new study shows. The report calls for bold policies to be adopted immediately in order for Canada to transition to a sustainable society. “Twenty years ago Canada was a leader on the climate change file. But today our reputation on this issue is in tatters,” James Meadowcroft, political science professor at Carleton University and one of the report’s authors told DeSmog Canada. “It is time for us to get serious and take vigorous action to move towards a low carbon emission economy.” The report is a collaboration between 60 Canadian scholars and outlines a 10-point policy framework to achieve dramatic emission reductions. At the top of the list is the need to put a price on carbon which was unanimously recommended by the report’s authors.

The Volcanic Underground: Is Geothermal Energy The Answer?

The Volcanic Underground: Is Geothermal Energy The Answer? | #Sustainability | Scoop.it
Alberta, B.C. and Saskatchewan are sitting on a wealth of free, green energy. So why is nobody doing anything about it?
Organic Social Media's insight:

We are already in the top – maybe the top five – producers of geothermal energy in the world. ”Strange words when you consider that Alberta has never produced a megawatt of geothermal. Alison Thompson, co-founder of the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CANGEA), sounds exasperated trying to explain the fact. “We are producing the energy, we’re just not doing anything with it,” she says. “It’s like a nuclear plant or a coal plant spinning the electrical generator but you didn’t connect it to the grid.”
