Imagining A Future City Filled With Driverless Cars And Without Any Parking Spaces

Imagining A Future City Filled With Driverless Cars And Without Any Parking Spaces | Sustainability Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

As self-driving cars move from fantasy to reality, what kind of effect will they have on cities?

A research and urban prototyping project called Shuffle City investigates, and in the process, becomes a manifesto for a new kind of modern city--one that depends less on traditional public transportation like buses or light rail and more on creating a fleet of continuously moving automated vehicles to serve urban mobility needs.

Shuffle City looks at the new possibilities that could arise from cities transitioning to cars without drivers. If cars were put into some constant flow as a public good, and if people didn’t all have their own vehicles, there would be no need for the concrete wastelands and lifeless towers that serve as a parking infrastructure in the urban landscapes of car-centric cities like Phoenix and Los Angeles (Under the current ownership model, the average car spends 21 hours per day parked.)

The share of city space ruled by parking lots will shrink, making way for more green space, environmental buffers, workspace, housing, retail, and denser planning for more walkable cities...

Green Sky Thinking: Sustainability myths to live by - MarkLives.com

In 2008, Treehugger featured a wonderful quote that read: “I’m not an ethical consumer, I’m just someone trying to consume more ethically” and whilst the conversation has changed from ethical to green to sustainable, this still pretty much sums it up.

Rooftop Stickers: Peel-and-Stick Solar 'Panels' May Be On Horizon | Sustainability Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

If recent work done by a joint Stanford-Korean team bears fruit, we may see a new generation of flexible, easy-to-install solar panels soon. The team, led by Hanyang University researcher Dong Rip Kim of that school's Department of Mechanical Engineering, has developed a way to laminate high-efficiency thin-film solar cells onto flexible surfaces with an adhesive backing -- offering the prospect of cheap "peel-and-stick" solar cells.

And that is exactly what this blog post by Rita Kop aka Welsh Cloggy is about, a clickable list of publications focused on one specific MOOC, PLENK2010. For those to whom this doesn't ring a bell, beware. The publications are about cMOOCs, the connectivist variant of MOOCs, which are almost the antithesis of xMOOCs, the ones about which there is so much to do. Not only are cMOOCs the older ones, these articles also provide a lot of pause to think about how we may or could or perhaps even should take xMOOCs forward to provide a less rigid and more social experience to the learners. Applied Mythology: Six Reasons Organic is NOT The Most Environmentally Friendly Way To Farm

Applied Mythology: Six Reasons Organic is NOT The Most Environmentally Friendly Way To Farm | Sustainability Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Contrary to widespread consumer belief, organic farming is not the best way to farm from an environmental point if view. The guiding principal of organic is to rely exclusively on natural inputs.  That was decided early in the 20th century, decades before before the scientific disciplines of toxicology, environmental studies and climate science emerged to inform our understanding of how farming practices impact the environment.  As both farming and science have progressed, there are now several cutting edge agricultural practices which are good for the environment, but difficult or impossible for organic farmers to implement within the constraints of their pre-scientific rules.
