Flower Power: This Machine Seed-Bombs Dirty Air

Flower Power: This Machine Seed-Bombs Dirty Air | Fighting for A Sustainable Planet: News and Resources | Scoop.it

There’s nothing wrong with “art for art’s sake,” the notion that works of art don’t require a justification or need to serve a higher purpose. But it’s also kind of cool when they do transcend that philosophy and send a specific message.

That’s certainly the case with artist Michael Jantzen’s design for his Eco-Seed Sowing Machines. The solar-powered structures would contain a large number of flower seeds that would be automatically released in small amounts whenever evidence of environmental degradation was observed around the machines.

Jantzen calls the project “a symbolic public art response to environmental degradation,” and he’d like to see the machines located in places around the world where environmental damage is the worst.

Susan Davis Cushing's curator insight, April 24, 9:38 PM

Imagine a piece of art that would blossom where environmental destruction is the worst, drawing more attention to the area as signals cause it to activate into a work of flowering beauty. Would it get your attention? Would it be a call for action? When funded, this artist's designs will change some landscapes significanlty.

Eco-footprinting.... starts from a series of simple premises:

    * People remain integral components of the ecosystems that sustain them;

    * Most human impacts on ecosystems are associated with energy and material extraction and consumption (all economic activity has material consequences);

    * Many energy and material flows are readily measurable and can be converted to corresponding productive or assimilative ecosystems areas;

    * There is a finite area of productive land and water ecosystems on Earth.

Great New Website: The Blue Carbon Initiative - IUCN

Great New Website: The Blue Carbon Initiative - IUCN | Fighting for A Sustainable Planet: News and Resources | Scoop.it

April 2, 2013 CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL

Efforts to restore marine ecosystems that store vast amounts of carbon have received a boost with the launch of a new website that provides the latest blue carbon science and policy.

The International Blue Carbon Initiative is a coordinated, global program focused on mitigating climate change through the conservation and restoration of coastal and marine ecosystems. Coastal ecosystems are some of the most productive on Earth. They provide us with essential ecosystem services, such as coastal protection from storms and nursery grounds for fish. We also know that they provide another integral service – sequestering and storing “blue” carbon from the atmosphere and oceans and hence are an essential piece of the solution to global climate change.... http://thebluecarboninitiative.org/

More:: There are a couple of major pathways for CO2 to be removed from the atmosphere. One isplant respiration. Plants absorb CO2 during their growth, and use it along with sunlight and water and other nutrients, to grow. The carbon in the CO2 is converted into plant matter, such as blanches, leaves, roots, etc. It is important to note that this absorption of CO2 is only temporary in the big scheme of things, because when the plant dies and decomposes, the plant matter will go back to CO2 during the decomposition process. Therefore, in its natural state, this is in balance... as much CO2 is absorbed as is emitted when averaged over time (not including processes such as deforestation, which is not in balance, and so right now, CO2is net being emitted by plants due to deforestation).

The other major way to remove CO2 is the oceans. The oceans have a tremendous capacity to absorb CO2. However, when CO2 is dissolved in water, it becomes carbonic acid, and so the more CO2 in the oceans, the more acidic it becomes. This is a serious problem for sensitive marine ecosystems. Also, CO2 can only be absorbed at the surface of the water, which is in contact with air. And so to absorb a lot of CO2, you have to wait until the surface water is mixed with the water from the deep oceans. This takes hundreds to thousands of years to happen. That is why the increased CO2 emissions due to humans is so serious. All the CO2we are pumping into the air right now will stay in the air for a length of time comparable to recorded human history.

There are no other known methods to remove CO2 from the air on the scale that we are emitting it !!!

Drilling deep into our earth through aquifers almost inevitably leads to contamination, and injecting fluids into the ground will inevitably contaminate water supplies. When I was up in Grande Prairie I found that most of the well water was too contaminated with sulfer and methane to be potable. A result of oil and gas drilling, imo.

Roggo made this picture a few weeks ago by mounting his camera on a pole. He made no contact with the water, because touching it in any way is prohibited in order to protect water quality and cultural heritage.

"To local Maori, Te Waikoropupu Springs are a taonga (treasure) and wahi tapu, a place held in high cultural and spiritual regard," said Roggo.

GMOs and Illegal Logging Halved Mexican Monarch Butterfly Population

GMOs and Illegal Logging Halved Mexican Monarch Butterfly Population | Fighting for A Sustainable Planet: News and Resources | Scoop.it

Photo via Shutterstock Just about anyone who grew up in the eastern United States will recall the beautiful black and brown Monarch butterflies that migrate en masse from Mexico to breed and feed in the US and Canada, before returning to slumber in a central Mexican forest. But this year their numbers have dropped by 59 percent, according to the latest WWF-led annual census of the insects. In part, this has to do with the loss of milkweed that butterflies require for food and to breed, which has declined in parts of the United States where genetically modified soybean and corn crops are grown. But that’s not the only reason, according to the experts. (more)
