What are Utilities Doing to Meet New York’s Vision for a 21st Century Energy System? | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Since the New York Public Service Commission (Commission) opened its Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) proceeding in the spring to modernize the state’s electricity system, a lot has happened. Namely, New York utilities are already working to align themselves with the broad objectives outlined in the REV proceeding. Here is an overview of efforts by the state’s big players: CON EDISON – Brooklyn/Queens Demand Management Program Growth in electricity demand in parts of Brooklyn and Queens is taxing infrastructure and will require action from Con Edison to ensure reliability.

Energy-efficient street lights could be a ‘smart’ way to cut carbon emissions

Energy-efficient street lights could be a ‘smart’ way to cut carbon emissions | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Denmark is carrying out an exercise in energy efficiency. A Copenhagen suburb is taking part in a massive experiment to determine the effectiveness of so-called ‘smart lights’. These energy-efficient street lamps could cut carbon emissions, since they brighten as pedestrians, cyclists or cars approach, but remain dark when no one is nearby. Each light can be controlled…

Top 5 Myths of Summer Energy Efficiency

Top 5 Myths of Summer Energy Efficiency | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Summer is just around the corner. In an effort to maintain a comfortably cool environment during the heat, many people blast air conditioning and turn fans to high gear without giving it a second thought. By doing so, they rack up astronomical energy bills, much of which could be easily avoided.

Energy Efficient bulb prices plunge as competition ramps up

Energy Efficient bulb prices plunge as competition ramps up | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

LED bulbs are cool the touch, last up to 35 years, are more energy efficient than incandescents, and are getting better and better in terms of color of light. Traditionally, however, they’ve come with a higher price tag than their predecessors.  Cree and Philips are both now boasting lower prices, meaning you can replace all your incandescent bulbs house-wide for not a lot of dough and start reaping the benefits. An added bonus, these bulbs are ENERGY STAR certified, meaning they meet certain qualifications for energy efficiency for added peace of mind and Energy Efficiency program rebates.

Un marché qui mûrit pour le bénéfice des consommateurs, mais qui espérons, n'entrera pas pour autant dans une guerre des prix délétère.

I've noticed this price drop and have been slowly switching to LEDs.  I buy a few and test them and then switch more when I see they work well.  In general I go up on the lumens and so now we have more light than before.

Energy Department Announces New Investments to Drive Cost-Competitive Next Generation Efficient Lighting

Energy Department Announces New Investments to Drive Cost-Competitive Next Generation Efficient Lighting | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Building on his strong focus on energy efficiency in his first few days in office, U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz announced today five manufacturing research and development projects to support energy efficient lighting products. The projects will focus on reducing manufacturing costs, while continuing to improve the quality and performance of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Today’s LED lighting is six or seven times more efficient than conventional lighting and can last up to 25 times longer. The Energy Department’s $10 million investment is matched dollar for dollar by private sector funding.

Light Up the New Year with Energy-Efficient Bulbs

Light Up the New Year with Energy-Efficient Bulbs | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Like the bad arguments used to defend them, traditional incandescent bulbs put out far more heat than light. That’s why no one should lament the gradual phase-out of this more-than-century-old technology, starting two years ago with the ban on the manufacture or importation (but not sale) of 100-watt incandescent bulbs.

How important is energy efficiency to Steven Chu? When Chu was first appointed Secretary of Energy under President Obama, he spoke to United States Senators about developing better appliance standards and building codes to improve energy efficiency in their states. He also urged these leaders to push energy efficiency among their constituents, not lower energy rates. “People care about their energy bill, not energy rates.” In fact, he found that states with lower energy rates had higher usage rates.

Commercial buildings to invest nearly US$960 billion in energy efficiency retrofits

Because the existing building stock dwarfs the amount of building space that is added on an annual basis, retrofits are a critical pathway to greening the world's commercial buildings. Regulations and policy measures, technological advances, and cost reductions are all driving increased investment in energy efficiency retrofits. According to Navigant Research, cumulative investment in commercial building energy efficiency retrofits will total US$959 billion from 2014 through 2023.

Use Energy-Efficient Lamps & Fixtures | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

A torchiere is a portable lamp designed to direct light upward for indirect illumination. Replacing a 300-watt halogen torchiere with a 55-watt compact fluorescent torchiere, when operating for three hours every day, will save about $199 in electricity over the life of the compact fluorescent bulb. There is an additional cost savings, as the life span of halogen bulbs is only one-third that of CFLs, so in the same time frame you have to buy three halogen bulbs.

How to Invest in Energy Efficiency to Combat Climate Change

How to Invest in Energy Efficiency to Combat Climate Change | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Energy efficiency is estimated to be a multi-hundred-billion dollar investment opportunity in the U.S., but better policies are required to unlock broad-based financing from institutional investors, who together manage approximately $70 trillion in assets globally. That is the key finding of Power Factor: Institutional Investors’ Policy Priorities Can Bring Energy Efficiency to Scale, a new report issued today by Ceres and its Investor Network on Climate Risk (INCR). Based on the input of nearly 30 institutional investors and other experts from the energy, policy and financial sectors, Power Factor cites three areas of policy—utility regulation, demand-generating policies and innovative financing policies—that can take energy efficiency financing to a scale sufficient to attract significant institutional investment

Investment analysts estimate that climate changecould contribute 10 percent of overall risk within institutional investment portfolios. Furthermore, the International Energy Agency estimates that one-third of emissions reductions must come fromenergy efficiency in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Energy efficiency-related investments thus offer institutional investors an attractive opportunity to manage the risks of climate change while earning returns.
