Softbank, Bloom Boxes, and Green Patenting in Japan | CleanTechies Blog - CleanTechies.com

Softbank, Bloom Boxes, and Green Patenting in Japan | CleanTechies Blog - CleanTechies.com | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Softbank, a Japanese telecommunications and internet company, recently formed a joint venture with U.S. fuel cell maker Bloom Energy to sell electricity from Bloom’s natural gas fuel cells in Japan.

A theme of this Greentech Media article about the JV is that Japan is “energy-poor” after the almostcomplete shutdown of its nuclear energy program. SoftBank believes Bloom’s fuel cells are a perfect fit for the country.

20.91 GW Of New Solar Approved In Japan Through May | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Industry, and Trade just published figures for renewable energy under the new feed-in tariff law in force since last July. Thanks to this tweet by Hiro Matsubara for the link.

To state the result in very short terms, wind is struggling even with the very high tariffs in place, and solar is headed for the “rocket start” former Prime Minister Noda called for last October.

WHO report calls for scientific research for universal health coverage

WHO report calls for scientific research for universal health coverage | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

World Health Report pushes for research by every country according to local needs.

The target of universal healthcare cannot be achieved without the evidence provided by scientific research, says the World Health Report (WHR) for 2013, released last week by the World Health Organization.

The report looks into various aspects of research conducted so far across the globe. It has some important pointers on healthcare trends. For example, more than US $100 billion is spent globally on health research each year but half of this is in private sector, mainly in the pharmaceuticals and biotechnology industry. The products so created are clearly directed at markets in high income countries.

It’s Bad, It’s Bad — It’s Really, Really Bad

It’s Bad, It’s Bad — It’s Really, Really Bad | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Climate change isn’t just bad for polar bears. It’s bad for humans – and it’s time we set the record straight with deniers.

Deniers say, “So what if there’s a little climate change? What’s wrong with a few more days at the beach?”

What’s wrong is what else comes with these hypothetical extra days at the beach.

The “It’s Not Bad” myth is one of the most dangerous misconceptions in the denier repertoire.

Florida Insurers Are Now Free to Screw Consumers and Must, By Law, Blame Obamacare

Florida Insurers Are Now Free to Screw Consumers and Must, By Law, Blame Obamacare | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Folks in Florida are facing having to pay far more for health insurance over the next two years than necessary. And health insurance executives will be laughing all the way to the bank.

I learned about what is essentially a "first, do as much harm as possible" bill in a letter the nine Democrats in the Florida congressional delegation sent to U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius earlier this month pleading with her to step in to protect Floridians by taking an active role in regulating rate increases in the state.

The lawmakers said intervention by HHS was urgently needed because of a law signed in May by Gov. Rick Scott that specifically prohibits Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty from doing his job of reviewing rate increases and rejecting those he and his staff determine are unjustifiably high.

As PolitiFact noted in a recent analysis of the charges made by the Democrats in their letter (which PolitiFact ruled are true), the states that have authority to approve or disapprove rates were "able to extract significant reductions." PolitiFact cited a Palm Beach Post story which noted that Maryland's insurance department had used its regulatory powers "to push rates for next year's premiums down by as much as a third."

As Florida CHAIN, a state advocacy group, pointed out when Scott signed SB 1842, the law not only blocks McCarty's office from protecting consumers, a provision in the law actually requires insurers to send deceptive and misleading notices about rate increases to consumers -- and to blame Obamacare for them.

Malaria biggest killer of kids in Chhattisgarh, says report | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Community-based survey report shows malaria prevalence is what differentiates high mortality districts from low mortality ones.

Malaria is the leading cause of death among children in Chhattisgarh, according to the findings of a community-based survey in the state. Even among older people, it is one of the leading causes of death, says the draft report of community-based monitoring for 2012-13. Low birth weight and severe malnutrition along with pneumonia and diarrhoea were the other leading causes of death among children, says the report made available on the state website recently.

Study Poses 'Troubling Observation' For The Senate

Study Poses 'Troubling Observation' For The Senate | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

As economists dig into the question of how bad U.S. income inequality is, a new study analyzes how Congress is fitting in to that equation.

According to research set to be published in Political Research Quarterly next month, the 107th through 111th Congresses saw a Senate that was more responsive to the upper income bracket. Using data from the 2004 National Annenberg Election Survey and various roll call votes, the study included some findings on party lines as well, headed by Republicans being more responsive to middle-income Americans during the 109th Congress.

“The fact that lower income groups seem to be ignored by elected officials, although not a new finding, remains a troubling observation in American politics,” wrote Trinity University's Thomas J. Hayes, the author of the study, according to Raw Story.
