» Peri-Urban Farming for Beijing—Towards Sustainable Production | Global Harvest Initiative

» Peri-Urban Farming for Beijing—Towards Sustainable Production | Global Harvest Initiative | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Many Chinese farms today are small (on average less than 0.6 hectares of land per household), and provide low qualities of life for Chinese farmers. In the first CPC central policy document for 2013, the Central Government indicated that China will promote larger, more advanced farms. These larger farms are intended to provide more income per farmer, and will therefore enable the purchase of more technology and inputs. The Chinese Government hopes that this model will increase agricultural efficiency while making agriculture more attractive among youth, while also providing farmers with a better quality of life. GHI’s Margaret Zeigler was introduced to some of these larger-scale farms on the study tour.

How to Invest in Energy Efficiency to Combat Climate Change

How to Invest in Energy Efficiency to Combat Climate Change | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Energy efficiency is estimated to be a multi-hundred-billion dollar investment opportunity in the U.S., but better policies are required to unlock broad-based financing from institutional investors, who together manage approximately $70 trillion in assets globally. That is the key finding of Power Factor: Institutional Investors’ Policy Priorities Can Bring Energy Efficiency to Scale, a new report issued today by Ceres and its Investor Network on Climate Risk (INCR). Based on the input of nearly 30 institutional investors and other experts from the energy, policy and financial sectors, Power Factor cites three areas of policy—utility regulation, demand-generating policies and innovative financing policies—that can take energy efficiency financing to a scale sufficient to attract significant institutional investment

Investment analysts estimate that climate changecould contribute 10 percent of overall risk within institutional investment portfolios. Furthermore, the International Energy Agency estimates that one-third of emissions reductions must come fromenergy efficiency in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Energy efficiency-related investments thus offer institutional investors an attractive opportunity to manage the risks of climate change while earning returns.

Solspaces project to test year-round solar heating system | GizMag.com | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Researchers at the University of Stuttgart are preparing to test a solar heating system capable of long term storage as part of "Solspaces," a three-year project that kicked off in March 2012. The heating concept uses a solar thermal system in conjunction with a sorption tank for storing heat from solar collectors throughout the warmer months that can then be released when the mercury drops.

The Solspaces concept has the potential to reduce the required storage space for solar heating systems and address the issue of heat retention. It involves a thermochemical heat storage tank with three to four times the energy density of water and improved thermal insulation, enabling more compact storage with less susceptibility to heat loss than conventional solar thermal systems relying on water as the heat storage medium.

Integral to the process is the microporous mineral zeolite, which boasts high energy density, low drying temperature and the ability to uptake large amounts of water vapor. During winter, the zeolite acts as a sorbent, adsorbing humidity from the moist air flowing through the reservoir. The binding of the water vapor with the sorbent produces heat energy, which is used to heat the building.

Clearly we need a new way of distributing/storing power in more effective ways.  But the leson here is that our power grid is old and problem-filled.  NOT that we should be de-emphasizing more responsible, sustainable energy sources.
