Data centers can be cooled down in environmentally friendly, energy efficient ways

Data centers can be cooled down in environmentally friendly, energy efficient ways | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Data centers housing thousands of computers have enabled the proliferation of new cloud-based services. One problem associated with data centers, however, is their aggregate electricity consumption. The servers in the data centers use electricity and generate heat, which can endanger the reliability of the services provided unless sufficient cooling is arranged. Mikko Pervilä will defend his dissertation on retrofit cooling techniques for data centers on 12 December 2013 at the University of Helsinki. His study also includes calculations for the minimum energy savings achievable with the techniques. As part of the dissertation research, Pervilä built a greenhouse running on exhaust heat on top of a building on the Kumpula Science Campus.

Recently I have been spending a lot of time thinking about global fuel subsidies. The most extreme example is Venezuela, where gasoline costs only 6 cents per gallon. That’s not a typo.

Incentives Needed For Consumers To Support Grid Evolution

Incentives Needed For Consumers To Support Grid Evolution | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

More than 7,000 people from around 120 countries attended the 22nd World Energy Congress in Daegu, South Korea, from October 13 to 17, 2013. The conference focused on the energy “trilemma”, meaning the conflicting requirements involved in supplying the still rapidly growing demand for energy in a secure, equitable and sustainable way.

Discussions ranged from the question of a renaissance in nuclear energy to the strong push of renewable energy in developed countries, to the rapid growth of demand in the emerging world, to the United Nations’ program Sustainable Energy For All (SE4ALL).

DOE Calls For More Support Bringing Down The Soft Costs Of Solar, Could Be You! (+ Infographic)

DOE Calls For More Support Bringing Down The Soft Costs Of Solar, Could Be You! (+ Infographic) | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The US Department of Energy (DOE) and many others have identified the “soft costs” of solar as the biggest cost barriers that need to be knocked down in order to unleash a true solar revolution in the US. As I’ve noted previously, the soft costs of solar are enormously larger in the US than in the much more mature German solar market, making the overall cost of going solar in Germany about half what it is in the US. The DOE’s response? The SunShot Initiative, which many CleanTechnica writers have covered at one point or another, but none as much as Tina. There’s a lot going on there to bring down the cost of solar in the US, and there are clear successes already, but the DOE is looking for even more applications.

Climate change: BLAMING HUMANS FOR OUR WARMING PLANET - What we know, what we're doing

Climate change: BLAMING HUMANS FOR OUR WARMING PLANET - What we know, what we're doing | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

We highlight not only how our lives are affected by climate change, but what people are doing about it.

In 1995, climate scientist Ben Santer first brought up the notion that humans were partially to blame for a warming planet. His views on climate change, backed by stacks of data, have gone from being in the extreme minority to the near-universally accepted majority.

"The warming we have seen in these many different aspects of the climate system — the ocean, the land surface, the ice, the atmosphere, water vapor, pressure patterns, circulation patterns — these changes cannot be purely explained by natural causation," Santer said. "You need a substantial human influence in order to best explain the observed changes we've seen."

Pipeline On Wheels: Trains Are Winning Big Off U.S. Oil

Pipeline On Wheels: Trains Are Winning Big Off U.S. Oil | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The oil boom in the United States is creating another boom — for the railroad industry.

So far this year, in North Dakota alone, 140 million barrels of oil have left on trains. Shipments of crude oil by rail are up almost 50 percent over last year — and this upward trend is expected to continue.

A visit to the world-famous Tehachapi Loop, part of a winding mountain pass in Southern California, demonstrates the scale and reach of the oil boom in the middle of the country. As a train full of oil tanker cars rumbles past, it's hard not to think of it as a pipeline on wheels.

Chinese cities becoming a minicar mecca - USATODAY.com

Chinese cities becoming a minicar mecca - USATODAY.com | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Speeding up one-way streets, and ignoring red lights, Liu Wenhe dares any Beijing cop to get in his way.

"If the police want to confiscate my car, I'll tell them to take my wife, too," laughs Liu, 62, gesturing to his smiling 61-year-old wife in the back seat.

Though not street legal, Liu's tiny, enclosed four-wheeler is one of the growing fleet of low-speed electric minicars appearing in China's traffic-choked cities. Factories are ramping up production of the vehicles, which can squeeze past gridlock as well as bypass government laws that restrict car use and ownership in China.

Legally speaking, police are supposed to pull over the unlicensed, uninsured and in some cases unsafe vehicles used predominantly by the elderly. But the battery-powered 7-by-3½-foot cars cruise the streets in open view and are stopped only during irregular crackdowns.

Richard Heinberg and Fracking's False Promise of Plenty

Richard Heinberg and Fracking's False Promise of Plenty | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

What do you know about hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” of natural gas? Probably depends on who you’re listening to. The fossil fuel industry tells you it’s the biggest energy development of the century, which promises America energy independence for the US and a huge boost to our economy with benefits to local economies. Many of the communities themselves tell a different story – of pollution on the one hand and social disruption on the other.

A deadly parasite moving north - USATODAY.com

A deadly parasite moving north - USATODAY.com | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Bridget Bahneman lost her daughter to an illness that wasn't supposed to exist as far north as Minnesota. Seven-year-old Annie's brain was destroyed by an amoeba calledNaegleria fowleri that she was exposed to while swimming in a lake near their house.

The "brain-eating amoeba" lives in fresh water and proliferates when temperatures reach the 80s. It infects people by entering the nose and reaching the brain.

It can't be transmitted by drinking infected water, only when it is pushed far up into the nose, says Jeremy Lewis of Arlington, Texas. He and his wife, Julie, founded Kyle Cares Amoeba Awareness, a non-profit organization, after they lost their son Kyle to the disease in 2010.
