More rain expected for already swollen rivers

More rain expected for already swollen rivers | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Communities along the Mississippi River and other Midwestern waterways eyed and in some cases fortified makeshift levees holding back floodwaters that meteorologists said could worsen or be prolonged by looming storms.

Overnight rain from Oklahoma to Michigan led the National Weather Service to heighten the forecast crest of some stretches of rivers while blunting the progress of other waterways' retreat.

Mark Fuchs, a National Weather Service hydrologist, said the latest dousing could be especially troublesome for communities along the Illinois River, which is headed for record crests.

Global Ponzi Scheme: We’re Taking $7.3 Trillion A Year In Natural Capital From Our Children Without Paying For It

Global Ponzi Scheme: We’re Taking $7.3 Trillion A Year In Natural Capital From Our Children Without Paying For It | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Last week, David Roberts over at Grist flagged a report carried out by the environmental consultant group Trucost, at the behest of The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity over at the United Nations.

The idea behind the report was simple. Tally up all the world’s natural capital — land, water, atmosphere, etc. — that doesn’t currently have a dollar value attached to it, and figure out the price. But the next step was where it got interesting. Figure how much of that natural capital is being consumed, depleted or degraded without the responsible party paying the cost for that use. The number the study hit on was a staggering $7.3 trillion in 2009 — about 13 percent of global economic output for that year.

Jordan Zemanek's comment, October 3, 2013 11:20 PM
With the widespread of wildfires in the United States, it only makes sense that charcoal is going everywhere. Since the charcoal doesn't stay in the soil (as previously thought), it is astounding to see how the charcoal is spread through rivers and other waterways into the ocean. From all over the world, water samples are taken and still they find traces of charcoal chemicals, which isn't bad, because charcoal is organic. It's a natural process so I don't think this will affect the environment much other than heating up the world with fire.
Alaina Rahn's comment, October 4, 2013 10:06 AM
I think something needs to be done to contain the charcoal. Th charcoal everywhere is not safe.
