9 Reasons Why 2013 Was Not The Best Year In Human History

9 Reasons Why 2013 Was Not The Best Year In Human History | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
It has to do with the fact that we're frying the planet

If you’ve been paying attention to the state of the world’s climate, you may have been shocked to read that 2013 was the best year in human history.

It wasn’t.

In 2013, enough fossil fuels were burned so that carbon pollution levels hit the milestone of 400 parts per million. Scientists confirmed, again, that this is bad news for most of the residents of Planet Earth, with many plants and animals facing extinction. This carbon pollution trapped enough heat to help fuel heat waves, droughts, wildfires, and floods. The oceans grew in size as sea levels reached record highs this year — meaning any storm making landfall became even more deadly.

Total and Amyris Take Another Step Down The Aisle Towards Commercial Biofuels | Alternative Energy Stocks

Total and Amyris Take Another Step Down The Aisle Towards Commercial Biofuels | Alternative Energy Stocks | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

In California and France, Amyris (AMRS) and Total announced the formation of Total Amyris BioSolutions B.V., a 50-50 joint venture that now holds exclusive rights and a license under Amyris’s intellectual property to produce and market renewable diesel and jet fuel from Amyris’s renewable farnesene. Amyris also plans to initiate sales of renewable jet fuel in Brazil once it achieves ASTM validation.

“The joint-venture Total Amyris Biosolutions is a first step towards the commercialization of our renewable diesel and jet fuels. We are in the phase of scaling-up the industrial process and we expect to start commercialization within the next few years, once our joint research and development goals are met,” said Philippe Boisseau, President, Marketing & Services and New Energies, and a member of TOTAL’s Executive Committee. “As far as commercialization is concerned, the new joint-venture will benefit from the know-how and customer access of TOTAL, which operates in more than 130 countries and is aiming to become a key supplier in renewable fuels,” Boisseau added.

Like other large cities in the U.S., Chicago hasbeen working to embrace renewable energy in a more aggressive fashion. Why do we transfer the real health risks inflicted by coal onto nuclear energy?

By George Monbiot, published in the Guardian 17th December 2013

Most of the afflictions wrongly attributed to nuclear power can rightly be attributed to coal. I was struck by this thought when I saw the graphics published by Greenpeace on Friday, showing the premature deaths caused by coal plants in China(1). The research it commissioned suggests that a quarter of a million deaths a year could be avoided there if coal power there were shut down(2). Yes, a quarter of a million.

Were Greenpeace to plot the impacts of nuclear power on the same scale, the vast red splodges depicting the air pollution catastrophe suffered by several Chinese cities would be replaced by dots invisible to the naked eye.

Carbon Dioxide Takes on Geothermal Energy | CleanTechies Blog - CleanTechies.com

Carbon Dioxide Takes on Geothermal Energy | CleanTechies Blog - CleanTechies.com | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Geothermal energy originates from the original formation of the planet and from radioactive decay of minerals. In 2010, the United States led the world in geothermal electricity production with 3,086 MW of installed capacity from 77 power plants. Though geothermal power is cost effective, reliable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly, it hashistorically been limited to areas near tectonic plate boundaries, such as The Geysers in California. However, researchers from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) are developing a new kind of geothermal plant that will use carbon dioxide to boost electric power generation by at least 10 times.
