Quilted greenhouse by C. F. Møller inflates to alter light and heat

Quilted greenhouse by C. F. Møller inflates to alter light and heat | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

A facade of translucent plastic pillows can be pumped up to alter lighting and temperature inside this domed greenhouse, located at the Aarhus botanical gardens, by C. F. Møller.

The architects worked with membrane facade specialist formTL to create the ETFE plastic facade of the new Tropical House to provide an energy-efficient envelope with a quilted texture around the 18-metre-high structure.

The light and heat conditions within the building can be adapted by increasing or decreasing the air pressure inside the pillows, which then changes the translucence of the facade.

The domed shape and the building's orientation in relation to the points of the compass have been chosen because this precise format gives the smallest surface area coupled with the largest volume, as well as the best possible sunlight incidence in winter, and the least possible in summer," said the architects.

2014, plus de liens, moins de biens, enfin ?

2014, plus de liens, moins de biens, enfin ? | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

China sets targets for curbing air pollution

China sets targets for curbing air pollution | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

CHINA-POLLUTION/:

China has set new targets for its provinces to reduce air pollution by 5 to 25 percent, state media said late on Tuesday, underscoring the government's concern about a source of public anger.

China regularly issues directives to try to tackle air pollution in major cities, but these have had limited effect.

Former health minister Chen Zhu said air pollution in the country causes premature deaths of 350,000 to 500,000 people yearly, state media reported on Tuesday. Chen wrote the article in a December issue of the Lancet medical journal.

Review: smart electric drive

Review: smart electric drive | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
First of all, it’s critical to note that the smart electric drive is much cheaper than the average car, or average electric car. After the US federal tax credit, the smart electric drive (ED) is $12,490 — not even half the price of the Ford Focus Electric ($27,700), and far less than the Nissan Leaf ($21,300), Fiat 500e ($24,300), or even Chevy Spark EV ($19,995). Actually, a few thousand dollars lower the Mitsubishi i ($15,495), it’s the cheapest electric car on the market in the US.

US Consumer Support For Clean Energy At Highest Level Since 2010

US Consumer Support For Clean Energy At Highest Level Since 2010 | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Consumer attitudes toward clean energy technologies in America rebounded strongly in 2013 to reach their highest levels since 2010, countering several years of declines in favorability ratings between 2009-2012.

This good news comes from Navigant Research’s 2013 Energy and Environment Consumer Survey, and indicates clean tech may finally be established as a preferred option for consumers despite high-profile conservative attacks.

Overall support for clean energy swung from 2012’s low of 44% to a 51% average favorability in 2013. In fact, out of ten technologies ranging from clean energy to clean transportation to energy efficiency, only one – nuclear power – declined in popularity over the past year.

No surprise in this 'surprising' report which the Commission tries to hush up. Only bringing political and economic leaders to court over failure to protect its citizens will put something in motion. But then it will already be too late anyway.

NSA Will Use Wastewater To Protect Us From Thugs

NSA Will Use Wastewater To Protect Us From Thugs | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

A lot of snickering has been going around the Internets for the last few days over a new National Security Agency computing center under construction at Fort Meade, Maryland, which has just inked a deal to use treated wastewater from a nearby treatment plant as a coolant. Yeah, that’s your sewage. But enough with the potty jokes, this is serious business.

Aside from protecting America from “cyber terrorists, spies, and thugs,” the wastewater reclamation project will enable the construction of a huge new 600,000 square foot water-sucking facility without sucking new water from a local aquifer that is already under stress.

The Other Electric Car Company | Alternative Energy Stocks

The market pundits cannot seem to get enough of Tesla and its founder/CEO Elon Musk.  Yet Tesla is not the only electric car producer that has met with some success with consumers.

China’s Kandi Technologies Group, Inc. (KNDI:  Nasdaq) produces small, low-speed electric vehicles for off-road and campus use as well as all-electric and gas-electric hybrids for street transportation.  Kandi’s best selling product, the Go-Kart, accounts for about one-third of unit sales, but contributes close to 60% of total revenue.  All together Kandi sold just over 137,000 units in the last twelve months.  About 85% of Kandi’s vehicles are sold at home in China, but even so some of those domestic sales are to distributors which end up bringing the vehicles to the U.S. market.
