Fuel made from waste goes on sale in California | SmartPlanet

Fuel made from waste goes on sale in California | SmartPlanet | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Will fuel sourced from landfill sites tempt U.S. consumers?

Clean Energy has become the first commercial distributor of fuel made entirely from waste.

The largest provider of natural gas for transportation will offer drivers a new type of fuel, dubbed Redeem, which is made from waste streams including landfills, large dairies and sewage plants. The fuel will be available at 35 stations in California to begin with.

Clean Energy says that the fuel is up to 90 percent cleaner than diesel and completely renewable. The fuel, biomethane, is derived from biogenic methane or biogas — the gas extracted from organic waste. This gas is then captured and the methane gas is processed, purified and sent into natural gas pipelines.

Comment on Wendell Berry on His Hopes for Humanity by Renee Greene

Comment on Wendell Berry on His Hopes for Humanity by Renee Greene | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
I was mesmerized with this interview re: Wendall Berry. I must confess that my knowledge of him was no better than “recognizing” his name… but I know better now. He’s a realist but his glimpse of hope and resolve was inspiring, to say the least.

Take a break from the Shutdown news. Here is  Bill Moyers' interview with the great, Kentuckian Wendell Berry. A loving, gentle, dynamic man my mother back in Kentucky spoke of as though she thought he was a treasure and she only knew his poems.

Let him help folks understand why things like a strip mine in Mississippi might not be the wisest way to make energy  like the Kemper Power plant plans to do in a state with the ground so close to the major water sources.

US government researchers barred from scientific conferences : Nature News Blog

US government researchers barred from scientific conferences : Nature News Blog | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Not only are government researchers barred from their own labs during the government shutdown, but they cannot travel anywhere else, either.

Researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) who were in San Francisco, California, attending a meeting on cytokines found their trips unexpectedly cut short when the government began shutting down at midnight on 1 October.  As soon as the news broke, NIH officials told the travelling researchers to come back immediately “by any means necessary”.

The organizers quickly rescheduled the meeting so that all the NIH employees could give their talks before the agency officially shut down. “They told us giving a talk after that was a federal crime,” says one NIH immunologist who asked that her name not be used, as she is not authorized to speak to the press.

As government shuts down, EPA workers volunteer to help communities

As government shuts down, EPA workers volunteer to help communities | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

We're public servants,' say EPA employees in North Carolina. Despite being told to stay home, they're out doing good.

When workers at the EPA offices in North Carolina were told they couldn't come to workbecause of the government shutdown, they decided to make the best of a bad situation. Despite receiving no paycheck, and not being sure when they'll be able to work again, these public sector workers are organizing a volunteer event every day to give back to the community. It is, in part, a way to keep busy.

Renewable energy finally comes to the farm, but its government help is in doubt

Renewable energy finally comes to the farm, but its government help is in doubt | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Across rural America, thousands of farms and small businesses are turning to renewable energy to cut costs and boost their often uncertain bottom lines, increasingly with the help of a decade-old federal program that aimed to hasten change in a part of the economy that had been slow to embrace it — yet where the electric bill can mean the difference between hiring a worker or laying one off.

Utilities and the Future of Energy | The Energy Collective | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Over the last year, Greentech Media's coverage of the future of utilities has ramped up significantly.

Expect a lot more on this topic as higher penetrations of efficiency and distributed energy start creating more conflict -- and enormous opportunities for those positioned to take advantage. For now, here are some of our best recent pieces on the fate of utilities. The range of views represented is very diverse.

Cree LED Bulbs Now Energy Star® Certified, Can Save You $100s

Cree LED Bulbs Now Energy Star® Certified, Can Save You $100s | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Earlier this year, Cree released two groundbreaking LED bulbs which were both efficient and reasonably bright.

One is the same brightness as a 40 watt incandescent light bulb (that is a brightness of 450 lumens, the same as a 14 watt CFL). The other model is equivalent to a 60 watt (800 lumen) incandescent bulb. The second one has a rated power consumption of 9.5 watts, translating to an efficiency of 84 lumens per watt, which is well beyond that of the average LED bulb (which is in the 40-lumen-per-watt range, and is far more expensive).

These LED bulbs have now received Energy Star® certification from the US Department of Energy. This certification is not only an indicator that they are highly efficient bulbs, but this also means that you can get an instant utility rebate for them. The 60 watt incandescent equivalent can cost as little as $4.97 after the utility rebate.

Global Warming Eats Sandy Beaches : DNews

Global Warming Eats Sandy Beaches : DNews | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Sea level rise is set take bites out of shorelines around the world. But there is a lot that can be done to minimize the damage and the costs.

Beaches are far more than just places to hang out and enjoy the ocean. They are also buffers that take the brunt of crashing waves and save the land behind the beach, where people live and work, from being washed away. A new study has taken a stab at figuring out just how much land we could lose this century due to sea level rise, how many people will be forced to move and how much it will all cost. It also looks at what could happen if we try and fight back by artificially adding sand to beaches.

Private Firefighter Crews Save Wealthy Homes From Wildfires As It Becomes Harder To Save The Poor’s

Private Firefighter Crews Save Wealthy Homes From Wildfires As It Becomes Harder To Save The Poor’s | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

More people than ever are at exposed to wildfire risk, but privatized firefighters save the wealthiest homes.

Over the last decade, wealthy Americans living in wildfire-prone areas have started turning to private contract services to keep their homes safe. Reuters describes how niche insurance policies are now sending private firefighter crews to protect multi-million-dollar homes from damage. One of AIG’s insurance plans for Western residents will preemptively send a crew to cover a home with fire-resistant foam when a wildfire approaches, at a cost of $7,000 annually.
