China sets targets for curbing air pollution

China sets targets for curbing air pollution | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

CHINA-POLLUTION/:

China has set new targets for its provinces to reduce air pollution by 5 to 25 percent, state media said late on Tuesday, underscoring the government's concern about a source of public anger.

China regularly issues directives to try to tackle air pollution in major cities, but these have had limited effect.

Former health minister Chen Zhu said air pollution in the country causes premature deaths of 350,000 to 500,000 people yearly, state media reported on Tuesday. Chen wrote the article in a December issue of the Lancet medical journal.

Review: smart electric drive

Review: smart electric drive | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
First of all, it’s critical to note that the smart electric drive is much cheaper than the average car, or average electric car. After the US federal tax credit, the smart electric drive (ED) is $12,490 — not even half the price of the Ford Focus Electric ($27,700), and far less than the Nissan Leaf ($21,300), Fiat 500e ($24,300), or even Chevy Spark EV ($19,995). Actually, a few thousand dollars lower the Mitsubishi i ($15,495), it’s the cheapest electric car on the market in the US.

Many Countries Reaching Diminishing Returns in Fertilizer Use | EPI

Many Countries Reaching Diminishing Returns in Fertilizer Use | EPI | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

As the world economy evolved from being largely rural to being highly urbanized, the natural nutrient cycle was disrupted. In traditional rural societies, food is consumed locally, and human and animal waste is returned to the land, completing the nutrient cycle. But in highly urbanized societies, where food is consumed far from where it is produced, using fertilizer to replace the lost nutrients is the only practical way to maintain land productivity. It thus comes as no surprise that the growth in fertilizer use closely tracks the growth in urbanization, with much of it concentrated in the last 60 years.

NSA Will Use Wastewater To Protect Us From Thugs

NSA Will Use Wastewater To Protect Us From Thugs | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

A lot of snickering has been going around the Internets for the last few days over a new National Security Agency computing center under construction at Fort Meade, Maryland, which has just inked a deal to use treated wastewater from a nearby treatment plant as a coolant. Yeah, that’s your sewage. But enough with the potty jokes, this is serious business.

Aside from protecting America from “cyber terrorists, spies, and thugs,” the wastewater reclamation project will enable the construction of a huge new 600,000 square foot water-sucking facility without sucking new water from a local aquifer that is already under stress.

The Other Electric Car Company | Alternative Energy Stocks

The market pundits cannot seem to get enough of Tesla and its founder/CEO Elon Musk.  Yet Tesla is not the only electric car producer that has met with some success with consumers.

China’s Kandi Technologies Group, Inc. (KNDI:  Nasdaq) produces small, low-speed electric vehicles for off-road and campus use as well as all-electric and gas-electric hybrids for street transportation.  Kandi’s best selling product, the Go-Kart, accounts for about one-third of unit sales, but contributes close to 60% of total revenue.  All together Kandi sold just over 137,000 units in the last twelve months.  About 85% of Kandi’s vehicles are sold at home in China, but even so some of those domestic sales are to distributors which end up bringing the vehicles to the U.S. market.

HYDRAULIC FRACTURING: As 'frack hits' grew in Alberta, regulators stepped in

The hiss of gas escaping was the first indication something was wrong in an oil field near the town of Drayton Valley, an hour as the crow flies from Edmonton, Alberta.

At times, fracking goes awry. The webs can connect with existing fractures in the shale and, in highly drilled areas such as the Cardium Shale of Alberta, create channels to nearby, older well bores. In such cases, known as "frack hits," the pumped-in fracking fluid and sand flows underground, propelled by the immense pressures, and up the older well, causing a blowout and a spill.
