New Video: If There's Global Warming, Why is It So Cold?

New Video: If There's Global Warming, Why is It So Cold? | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

I did one of these years ago, during the "Snowmageddon" events of 2009, and have been meaning to update. The current situation lends itself perfectly.

I continued the tradition of interviewing Jeff Masters at Dunham Lake, near his pastoral southeastern Michigan home, and by serendipity, caught up with Jennifer Francis at the nearby  University of Michigan School of Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences. for a quick update/interview.

Global Warming and Inventor Responsibility | The Energy Collective

Global Warming and Inventor Responsibility | The Energy Collective | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

The climate crisis of the 21st century has been caused largely by just four men, who between them invented machines responsible for the majority of the greenhouse gas emissions generated since the dawning of the industrial age.

Prime movers, machines that turn thermal energy into electrical or mechanical energy play a fundamental role in the global economy. Without these you would not be able to get from London to New York in seven hours, ride the subway to work, transport your iPhone from Shenzen to Los Angeles, or even read this sentence. And the world of prime movers is dominated by a small number of machines: steam turbine, diesel engine, petrol engine and gas turbine. Not only are these machines of great economic importance, they are responsible for almost all of the carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation and transport.

California Offers Electric Car Subsidies For Low-Income Families

California Offers Electric Car Subsidies For Low-Income Families | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Hybrid and electric cars can make a huge difference in reducing local air quality, and can help their owners save money while staying more insulated against the volatility of fossil fuel prices. Unfortunately, most plug-in electric cars cost more than the used cars that lower-income families and communities — the people who could most benefit from EV fuel savings, in other words — can typically afford. It doesn’t have to be that way, however, and California’s Air Resource Board (CARB) is working to help low-income families get access to EVs by issuing vouchers starting at $2500.

Falling prices and advancements of home solar power is leading many consumers to consider adding them to their homes. And while prices have fallen dramatically over the last decade, residential systems can still be costly, which is why some owners turn to leasing their systems.

A Historical Perspective on Arctic Warming: Part One

A Historical Perspective on Arctic Warming: Part One | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

During her most recent Senate testimony, Dr. Judith Curry (Georgia Tech) repeated one of the most common misconceptions found in the blogosphere, that the Arctic was warmer than present during the 1940s. This period - known as the Early Century Warm Period (ECWP) - coincides with observations of reduced Arctic sea ice cover and allowed for more widespread ship navigation than during the late 1800s and early 1900s (Johanessen et al. 2004). There are two elements to the contrarian views on the ECWP in the Arctic.

Kicking cigarette butts out of California is aim of bill

Kicking cigarette butts out of California is aim of bill | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Studies show that their non-biodegradable nature and toxic chemical makeup can contaminate waterways, poison fish and birds, and be a health danger to children who try to eat them. Filters were thought to lower the tar and nicotine content of cigarette smoke, making them a healthier addition to the smoking experience. Smokers tend to compensate for the diluted smoke by puffing deeper and more frequently. [...] they tend to breathe in virtually the same amount of tar and nicotine as those who smoke non-filtered cigarettes, research shows. A study, published last January in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggested that filters and other design changes in cigarettes haven't reduced lung cancer, but rather changed the types of lung cancers that have become more common since the 1970s.

Climate Code Red: With Arctic freezer door open, frigid air drains into USA and Eurasia, with Arctic unusually mild | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Its shows swathes of North America and northern Eurasia with winter temperatures up to 20 degrees Celcius (20C) below the average for this time of the year (deep purple), whilst much of the Arctic is up to 20C warmer than usual (bright red).

If the Arctic is the northern hemisphere's refrigerator, then the freezer door has been opened wide, with frigid air draining into USA/Canada/Eurasia, and unusually warm air rushing into the Arctic.

The reason is well understood and its climate-change-driven destabilisation of the Jet Stream.
