Government Declares Mass Dolphin Die-Off an Unusual Mortality Event - Wired Science

Government Declares Mass Dolphin Die-Off an Unusual Mortality Event - Wired Science | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

At least 54 bottlenose dolphins have died mysteriously in Florida’s Indian River Lagoon since January. Today, the federal government is stepping in to help find out what’s killing them.

In a normal year, that number would be closer to 22.

On July 24, NOAA declared the mass die-off an “Unusual Mortality Event” — a declaration that will send federal resources and scientists to help teams already on the ground in Florida. It’s the lagoon’s worst dolphin die-off on record, and the cause is mysterious.

Scientists Predict Looming Climate Shift: Will Ocean Heat Come Back To Haunt Us Once Again?

Scientists Predict Looming Climate Shift: Will Ocean Heat Come Back To Haunt Us Once Again? | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Some 90% of total global warming goes into heating the oceans. NOAA has several chartsshowing that the oceans are rapidly heating, just as climate scientists predicted. Here’s one:

As the saying goes, what goes down must come up. Ocean heat is going to come back up. That is precisely why climatologists predict a looming climate shift to rapid surface warming, as discussed here.

Climate bias at Reuters revealed

Climate bias at Reuters revealed | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

"A Media Matters study finds that Reuters' coverage of climate change declined by nearly 50 percent under the regime of the current managing editor, lending credence to a former reporter's claim that a 'climate of fear' has gripped the agency.

"David Fogarty, a former Reuters climate change correspondent, wrote that Managing Editor Paul Ingrassia, then serving as deputy editor-in-chief, identified himself as 'a climate change sceptic' in 2012.

"As time went on, Fogarty alleged, 'getting any climate change-themed story published got harder,' as some desk editors 'agonised' over decisions and allowed articles to become mired in bureaucracy. Eventually, amid a 'climate of fear,' Fogarty's role was 'abolished.'

From the article:

"Now is the time for all of us to recognize and embrace social sustainability--much in the same way we’ve focused on environmental sustainability for the past 20 years--as a mission-critical way of doing business. By social sustainability, I mean investing in the livelihoods of farm and factory laborers, ending worker exploitation, and ensuring that there is ethical sourcing behind the things we buy."
