ANALYSIS: Fox Only Talks About Climate Change When It's Cold

ANALYSIS: Fox Only Talks About Climate Change When It's Cold | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

During their coverage of cold weather from January 2 to January 8, Fox News brought up climate change nine times, casting doubt on it every single time. They also devoted a significant amount of coverage to a ship getting stuck in Antarctic ice to mock climate change during this period. But this strongly contrasts Fox News' coverage of extreme heat events, in which the network is typically silent on the topic of global warming. A previous Media Matters analysis found that, in a parallel week-long time period in 2011, Fox News did not mention climate change once while reporting on an unusually intense heat wave. And throughout the entire month of July 2012, which was the hottest month on record for the United States, the network discussed climate change in the heat wave's context once -- in order to deny it.

ALEC Gain An Inside Track On Colorado Solar

ALEC Gain An Inside Track On Colorado Solar | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Governor Hickenlooper (D-CO) nominated former Colorado State Representative Glenn Vaad to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.  Mr. Vaad began his 4 year term on January 7th while waiting for his confirmation by the Colorado State Senate.  The interesting point about Mr. Vaad’s nomination is that the former Representative was quite active in supporting and being involved in ALEC, the corporate anti-solar lobbying group.  Mr. Vaad is a past winner of the “Legislator of the Year” award from ALEC and an attendee on some ALEC sponsored trips.  Additionally, Mr. Vaad chaired an ALEC committee which included topics covering commerce and infrastructure.

Review of After Oil: SF Visions Of A Post-Petroleum World (short story collection edited by John Michael Greer)

Review of After Oil: SF Visions Of A Post-Petroleum World (short story collection edited by John Michael Greer) | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

“Science fiction is a metaphor, but it is not for predicting the future.” These are the words of science fiction visionary James Cameron, the filmmaker behind such classics as Terminator,Titanic and Avatar.* When Cameron made this statement, he was trying to combat one of the most widely held misconceptions about science fiction, which is that it seeks to foretell the future. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is wrongheaded to fault science fiction storytellers for wrong predictions or credit them for right ones, when most see themselves not as envisioning the future at all, but rather as weaving imaginative tales set in possible futures.

The Electric Car — One Man’s Story

The Electric Car — One Man’s Story | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

It was almost inevitable that Chad Schwitters would buy an EV. He had used biodiesel, rode the bus, carpooled, moved close enough to work that he could walk, etc – all for environmental reasons.

He didn’t know anybody who owned EV, and thought they would probably “suck,” but was willing to make the sacrifice. He was wrong.

“It turns out there is no sacrifice, EVs are better cars,” Schwitters said. “Even if somebody invented carbon-free domestic gasoline and gave it away for free, I would still drive electric simply because the experience is so much better.”

He and his wife save about $200/month using electricity instead of gas.
