Siemens has obtained a $225 million contract to build 32 “Charger” diesel-electric locomotives in its Sacramento rail manufacturing facility for US high-speed rail projects.


Five states are ordering locomotives. The Illinois Department of Transportation’s order is connected to an overhaul of its Chicago to St Louis route. California, Washington, Michigan, and Missouri have joined the deal, which includes options for an additional 75 locomotives for regional use and another 150 locomotives for mainline transportation. The locomotives are scheduled to be delivered between fall of 2016 and mid-2017.

BEIJING, March 27 (Reuters) - China's plan for a market in air pollution permits promises to help clean up its air cheaply, but the move could prove just as useless as previous unless the government stamps out lax enforcement and spotty data.

 

Smog regularly blankets the country's major urban centres and kills half a million people each year.

 

The news of plans to launch a market within three years demonstrates China's growing will to tackle environmental problems through market-based tactics, rather than its traditional command-and-control measures.

OSLO, March 26 (Reuters) - A little-known technology that may be able to take the equivalent of China's out of the carbon cycle could be the radical policy shift needed to slow climate change this century, a draft U.N. report shows.

Using the technology, power plants would burn biomass - wood, wood pellets, or plant waste like from sugar cane - to generate electricity while the carbon dioxide in the biomass is extracted, piped away and buried deep underground.

Among techniques, a can strip carbon dioxide from the flue gases from combustion.
