Les tiques peuvent transmettre une mystérieuse maladie récemment découverte à Zurich. Si elle est repérée, elle se soigne bien. Le hic? Elle est très difficile à diagnostiquer.

German economics minister “austerity policies have failed” | Bill Mitchell – billy blog | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

France has been hit particularly hard by fiscal austerity. The difficult times that it has created have then led to the inevitable divisions appearing within the population and the call for scapegoats. Typically migrants become the easy targets for the wrath felt by an increasingly unemployed population.

Tricolored blackbird population falling at alarming rate

Tricolored blackbird population falling at alarming rate | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Grains grown to feed the cows resemble the lost tules and cattails that the picturesque songbirds once called home, providing the flocks new sanctuary to raise their young. Scientists say the blades that pluck the feed crops are also mowing down thousands of baby blackbirds and eggs - one reason the bird is in rapid decline. With much of California's historical wetlands dried up, the bird has struggled to find habitat of sufficient size. Fields of the wheat-rye hybrid triticale, grown to feed dairy cattle, are good places for blackbirds to reproduce. A program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture pays dairy owners to harvest their crop only after the birds' young are born and able to fly away.

How the insurance industry sees climate change ("extra premiums mean CC is not a hoax but so real")

How the insurance industry sees climate change ("extra premiums mean CC is not a hoax but so real") | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Twenty years ago, I interviewed Frank Nutter, then and now president of the Reinsurance Assn. of America, on the threat climate change posed to the $2-trillion-plus global property and casualty insurance industry.

"It is clear," he said back then, "that global warming could bankrupt the industry."

But in the two decades since, the industry mostly limited itself to talk, sponsoring innumerable reports on the threat. Now a major insurance company has moved to protect itself, and it may be the most important milestone yet in the struggle to contend with global warming.

FOR THE RECORD:
Climate change: A June 17 Op-Ed article accurately reported on nine class-action lawsuits filed by insurance company Illinois Farmers against cities and counties for failing to take steps to prevent losses related to climate change. Farmers has withdrawn the lawsuits, saying it believes that its "policyholders' interests will be protected in the future" and that it hopes to continue "constructive" conversations with the cities and counties. The Op-Ed said Farmers is owned by Zurich Group. It is not; Zurich Group owns Farmers Management Co., which provides administrative oversight to Farmers.

Feds: Oil train details not security sensitive

Feds: Oil train details not security sensitive | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
(AP) â€" U.S. transportation officials said Wednesday that details about volatile oil train shipments are not sensitive security information, after railroads sought to keep the material from the public following a string of fiery accidents. The U.S. Department of Transportation has ordered railroads to give state officials specifics on oil-train routes and volumes so emergency responders can better prepare for accidents. The move is mandated under the state's open records law and will help protect public safety by raising community awareness, said Andrew Huff, chief legal counsel for Gov. Steve Bullock. State officials who questioned the confidentiality agreements sought by the railroads have said the notifications about oil trains were not specific enough to pose a security risk. A representative of the Texas-based company had said in a June 13 letter that BNSF would consider legal action if Montana moved to release the details on oil shipments.

Texas gas town considers banning fracking

Texas gas town considers banning fracking | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

For more than a decade, Denton has drawn its lifeblood from the huge gas reserves that lie beneath its streets. The gas fields have produced a billion dollars in mineral wealth and pumped more than $30 million into city bank accounts.

But this former farming center north of Dallas is considering a revolt. Unlike other communities that have embraced the lucrative drilling boom made possible by hydraulic fracturing, leaders here have temporarily halted all fracking as they consider an ordinance that could make theirs the first city in the state to permanently ban the practice.
