Steam from the sun: New sponge-like material converts 85% of solar energy into steam

Steam from the sun: New sponge-like material converts 85% of solar energy into steam | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

A new material structure developed at MIT generates steam by soaking up the sun. The structure — a layer of graphite flakes and an underlying carbon foam — is a porous, insulating material structure that floats on water. When sunlight hits the structure’s surface, it creates a hotspot in the graphite, drawing water up through the material’s pores, where it evaporates as steam. The brighter the light, the more steam is generated.

The new material is able to convert 85 percent of incoming solar energy into steam — a significant improvement over recent approaches to solar-powered steam generation. What’s more, the setup loses very little heat in the process, and can produce steam at relatively low solar intensity. This would mean that, if scaled up, the setup would likely not require complex, costly systems to highly concentrate sunlight.

What If Canada Exported Clean Energy Instead of Oil? | The Tyee

What If Canada Exported Clean Energy Instead of Oil? | The Tyee | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

In Africa, where solar is cheaper than diesel, Quebec's Windiga is doing just that.

[Editor's note: The Tyee's sustainability reporter Geoff Dembicki is on a months-long journalistic quest to answer the big question of his millennial generation: Are We Screwed? Find a complete list of his dispatches as they appear here.]

Fight climate change or grow the economy. That's the message we've all been hearing for the past two decades. It's what us Canadians continue to hear from our elected officials. "It's not that we don't seek to deal with climate change," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said last month in Ottawa. "But we seek to deal with it in a way that will protect and enhance our ability to create jobs and growth, not destroy jobs and growth.... And frankly, every single country in the world, this is their position."

Boston May Need Canals To Combat Floods

Boston May Need Canals To Combat Floods | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

Boston’s leaders hope it can serve as the symbol of a new revolution: a movement to accept that climate change is poised to have a major impact on coastal cities, and that those urban centers must take drastic steps to adapt and survive.

“We’re now as a city beginning to put together all the concerns — sea level rise, climate change, why these iconic historic buildings are threatened, and what we need to do to try to protect them,” said Boston Environment Commissioner Nancy Girard.

Like many, Girard said in 2012 Boston learned a harsh lesson when Superstorm Sandy happened to turn away from the city, and instead spread destruction along large swaths of New York. The wake-up call worked- Boston officials and area organizations began sketching out possible solutions, culminating in late May with a conference where experts and stakeholders debated options.

The great American oyster collapse

Willapa Bay is an ideal place to farm oysters.

Vast swathes of the bay, in the northwestern US state of Washington, are exposed at low tide - making it an ideal place for oyster cultivation. It's one of the most productive oyster farming areas in the US.

But just over 10 years ago, the dynamic in the bay and other parts of the Pacific Northwest changed: Oysters started dying off, a development believed to be linked to climate change.

Return on Investment | Eric Garza

Return on Investment | Eric Garza | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it

While monetary and energy ROI ratios can be useful metrics, I’ve come to believe that the ROI framework is much more broadly useful. I’m currently teaching a course on voluntary simplicity, and a recent homework assignment invited students to keep track of every penny they spend over the course of a week and to explore the many types of non-monetary benefits they get from that spending. Does the money spent on dinner with a friend have the added benefit of strengthening that relationship? Does the money spent buying food at a farmers’ market have the added benefit of providing access to higher quality food than one can get at a local supermarket? Does supporting farmers’ markets pay added dividends by creating a space for people to come together, have conversations they might not otherwise have and support the building of community more generally?

First Detroit, Now Flint Warns Bankruptcy "Train Is Headed For The Cliff" | Zero Hedge

Flint may be Michigan’s second city to plunge into bankruptcy unless retirees accept cuts in health benefits that threaten to unravel a balanced budget. As Crain's Detroit reports, Emergency Manager Darnell Earley (Flint’s third emergency leader since it was placed under state control in 2011) warned "If we have no ability to mitigate the cost of retiree health care, that’s going to make it very difficult for the city to remain financially stable over the next few years." As Eric Scorsone notes, "Flint's at the forefront, but a lot of cities are on the same train, and that train is headed for the cliff."

A fracking company made federal and state agencies that oversee drinking-water safety wait days before it shared a list of toxic chemicals that spilled from a drilling site into a tributary of the Ohio River. Although the spill following a fire on June 28 at the Statoil North America well pad in Monroe County stretched 5 miles along the creek and killed more than 70,000 fish and wildlife, state officials said they do not believe drinking water was affected.

What is peat swamp, and why should I care? | Sustain Our Earth | Scoop.it
Long considered an unproductive hindrance to growth and development, peat swamp forests in Southeast Asia have been systematically cleared, drained and burned away to make room plantations and construction. Now, as alternating cycles of fires and flood create larger development problems, while greenhouse gas emissions skyrocket, it is time to take a closer look at peat, and understand why clearing it is a very bad idea.
